Leach: We played LSU because New England, Green Bay and the Chiefs had somebody scheduled.

It just mean$ more
September 28th, 2020 at 2:25 PM ^
I was at the game on Saturday and can confirm that LSU fans are nuts. Even at 25% capacity, I was really impressed with the amount of noise those season ticket holders made. It was my first game in Baton Rouge, but can't wait to get back to one when things are at full capacity.
September 27th, 2020 at 10:19 AM ^
I still can’t believe Costello threw for 600+ yards. That is just insane.
September 27th, 2020 at 11:04 AM ^
Imagine the results of UM/OSU, only swap out OSU for, like, Nebraska.
That's what just happened to LSU's defense full of 5* dudes that are all gonna play on Sundays.
September 27th, 2020 at 11:20 AM ^
Two words. Bo Pelini
September 27th, 2020 at 11:59 AM ^
Mike Leach's comments were tremendous. Talk about throwing shade. While he is not, contrary to common belief, a national treasure, he is a lot of fun. And he is, blessedly, an original. Unlike say, Kirby Smart, Scott Frost or Ryan Day (or the late and very much unlamented Mark Dantonio). You couldn't pull a needle out of their asses with a tractor.
September 27th, 2020 at 2:02 PM ^
Costello had a great game, but he was probably helped by the fact that LSU lost 7 defensive players to the NFL draft, while Mississippi State lost 1 offensive player to the draft other than the QB who Costello replaced.
September 27th, 2020 at 6:05 PM ^
Yes, but, and here me out. Mississippi State lost 7 offensive starters to graduation or other attrition. It was the first game for a new head coach with a transfer QB with 3 new offensive linemen and only one starting receiving returning and they hung over 600 passing yards on the road against the defending national champions. It may not have been the same LSU defense as last year but I am impressed. Also, I am writing from Starkville and a little biased.
September 27th, 2020 at 11:09 AM ^
Costello made some mistakes but did make some great throws -- he's not afraid to give his receivers chances to make plays on balls.
Does Costello win the Heisman? He's going to rack up some serious stats this year in that offense.
September 27th, 2020 at 11:28 AM ^
They won't win enough.
September 27th, 2020 at 11:46 AM ^
I don't know man... I think they beat (LSU obviously) ole Miss, Arkansas, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Missouri, Texas a&m... which one of those teams beats that Mississippi State team??? That puts them at seven wins. The rest of the schedule is Alabama Auburn and Georgia. Not sure Georgia beats Mississippi State with Stetson Bennett at quarterback. If they can roll that 710 split and be 9-1. Stranger things have happened.
September 27th, 2020 at 12:33 PM ^
Robert Griffen III won the Heisman ans Baylor only went 10-3
September 27th, 2020 at 11:59 AM ^
I still can't believe LSU claims to be DBU...
September 27th, 2020 at 2:14 PM ^
Well, they do happen to have the best defensive back in the country. He just happened to be hospitalized Friday night and couldn't play yesterday.
September 27th, 2020 at 5:40 PM ^
I thought they herd immunity???
September 27th, 2020 at 2:26 PM ^
I remember when we were in the thick of it for Costello in the fall/winter of 2015. We settled for Brandon Peters. *sigh*

The Pirate is a national treasure.

Aye aye, matey.
September 27th, 2020 at 10:35 AM ^
Heck yes he is
If Jim Harbaugh was ever to leave MICH, Mike Leach is the only guy I'd want to replace him.
(Spare me the talk of no conference titles.... idgaf)
Mike Leach is a national treasure
September 27th, 2020 at 11:30 AM ^
Mike Leach is 60. I would rather my next HC be a little younger.
September 27th, 2020 at 12:07 PM ^
Mike Leach is immortal
September 27th, 2020 at 2:50 PM ^
He wouldn't last with this fanbase. All the quirky, unusual antics he's treasured for now would become despised within two years (assuming he hadn't won the conference by then). It's happened with the last two coaches.
September 27th, 2020 at 5:51 PM ^
I don't think the boosters wearing the maize blasers on Saturdays would quite go for his style
September 27th, 2020 at 10:24 AM ^
Gotta love his description of the game, "It was better than average".
September 27th, 2020 at 10:27 AM ^
If I was ever a football coach, I'll probably be just like Leach 'cause I can be weird sometimes.
September 27th, 2020 at 10:31 AM ^
Argh! (in Pirate), not "can be". Period after weird.
September 27th, 2020 at 10:40 AM ^
Characters like Leach are what make football just the best.

What does a pirate say after getting kicked in the balls?
Menards...
September 27th, 2020 at 11:16 AM ^
Lowe's?!
Dammit I was close
September 27th, 2020 at 12:25 PM ^
Certainly wasn't Home Depot.
September 27th, 2020 at 12:42 PM ^
Arrr...right in me cannon balls!
September 27th, 2020 at 1:41 PM ^
What did the pirate say when he was asked why he had a ship's wheel on his penis?
"Aargh, it's drivin' me nuts."
September 27th, 2020 at 11:00 AM ^
I cannot imagine Alabama/LSU/Aubrun are thrilled to see Leach every season for the next couple years.
September 27th, 2020 at 12:10 PM ^
This! The only teams which have really given Saban fits have been high octane offense teams. I expect Saban loses a couple to Leach and starts whining for rule changes.
September 27th, 2020 at 11:29 AM ^
Honestly, I get why there is a lot of Leach love here (great coach, and weird, and funny) but there is no way he would do well at Michigan. Too much of a wild card for the blue bloods, imho.
That said, what a game and win yesterday. It's amazing to me that under Harbaugh, we've been very very solid, but I can't really point to one win that felt like a real upset where the team played so well under the limelight. Alas...
September 27th, 2020 at 12:07 PM ^
That’s because there haven’t been any. I don’t think Michigan has had one upset under Harbaugh.
September 27th, 2020 at 12:12 PM ^
It’s harder to pull off upsets when you are favored to win.
September 27th, 2020 at 12:35 PM ^
Urban Meyer went 7-0 as an underdog at OSU
September 27th, 2020 at 1:25 PM ^
Such a weird stat to nitpick. Record as an underdog? He also lost 4 TD games as a huge favorite against Purdue and Iowa. While Harbaugh hasn’t gone out and won as an underdog (the listed games as an underdog were pretty daunting) he also hasn’t shit the bed against teams we were supposed to beat handily.
September 27th, 2020 at 2:20 PM ^
I'll gladly trade a loss to Indiana or Purdue for any road win against PSU, Wisconsin, or OSU.
September 27th, 2020 at 2:21 PM ^
Who cares? I'd rather lose a random game here and there but win on the biggest stage than shit our pants on the biggest stage constantly. Lloyd Carr was pretty well known for that at least the first half of his career.
September 27th, 2020 at 2:44 PM ^
We have not "shit our pants on the biggest stage". Other than two OSU games, we've been in it til the end, two of those we should have won (2016 we did, JT was short). In two of those, our QB was completely broken, and our defense depleted.
September 27th, 2020 at 3:08 PM ^
Harbaugh is 2-11 vs top ten teams
Lloyd Carr was 19-8
Also THREE OSU losses have been blowouts one of which we were favored in.
Please tell me again how we don't shit our pants on the biggest stage.
You are delusional if you think any year we're going to be 100% zero holes on the team going into that game.
Twice we've knocked out their starting QB and they still won. They didn't even have Bosa in 2018 and still steamrolled us.
In 1997 we were our Eric Mayes and Dadrion Taylor....still won.
In 2003 we lost Jason Avant early...still won.
September 27th, 2020 at 2:42 PM ^
"he also hasn’t shit the bed against teams we were supposed to beat handily."
Michigan was a 9-pt favorite over South Carolina in the '18 Outback Bowl.
September 27th, 2020 at 5:28 PM ^
Yeah, but remember over half this blog doesn’t think bowl games matter anymore, so that won’t count.
September 27th, 2020 at 1:52 PM ^
Michigan's been part of an upset a number of times under Harbaugh...
oh wait...
September 27th, 2020 at 12:51 PM ^
I would hope that the blue bloods are tired of losing 15 of 16 to THEEEE ohio with 3 of the 4 coaches being Michigan Men, and would be willing to take a chance, and I bet he doesn't know any Josh Groban songs either.
September 27th, 2020 at 1:13 PM ^
Yea, no way in hell he flies here. They wouldn’t even give RR the time of day because he was southern. I’m not a huge Leach fan and wouldn’t want himself, but if RR who by all accounts was your standard coach, but from the south, couldn’t get a fair shake here, Leach isn’t either.
September 27th, 2020 at 2:22 PM ^
Rodriguez was born in Chicago and grew up in WV. Neither of those places qualify as southern.
