Remember when Carr went 8-4 and everyone wanted to crucify him. Our expectations have really fallen.
Peppers at 10, which seems low.
Remember when Carr went 8-4 and everyone wanted to crucify him. Our expectations have really fallen.
this is a really stupid thing to say, we're not happy with 7-3, we're happy with 7-3 this year because we're smart enough to realize that RR has had a lot of problems dealt to him and will continue to get better in the future....
If the turn over bug would stop , this team would have 1 or 2 more wins.
next year as our guys turn 1 year older.....turnovers (at this rate) are a sign of youth and inexperience.
That was what we said in 2008. And 2009. And now 2010. At some point, we have to look at whether or not players are being adequately trained in practice to HOLD ONTO THE DAMN BALL.
Sheridan, Threet, Forcier and now Robinson. Both our starting quarterback and our backup are true sophmores.
I would agree that kick returns are still troubling. While we have improved since 2008 we still have not eliminated the problem.
the good ol' days.
I was being sarcastic and making fun of the post... god damn.
What did you expect?
Personally, I expected too see a much gooder team.
Their getting they're. There turnovers are what is holding them back.
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I think most of the crucification talk was coming at the beginning of the season after The Horror, and being blown out by Oregon, at home, when nobody knew Oregon was THAT good. The talks definitely died down.
Of course, our standards have fallen, but giving a head coach time to get his players in, and starting to see success once a coach is playing with his players, and being happy about it, isn't too much of a drop in expectations.
To remember when any time we lost 3 games people would call for the coach's head, and even if you lost 2 there'd be grumbling. These are the impossible standards Michigan Football used to be held to. If anything, the last few years have made them more reasonable.
Had Dennis Dixon not torn his ACL against Arizona, Oregon would have had a strong case for playing for the national title.
You must not have watched any Oregon games in 2007, because they were a damn strong team.
"Damn strong?" -- Les?
Thankfully DB is a more analytical thinker than you are. This team is moving forward. Whatever happens the next two games, we get the bowl practices, hopefully we win the bowl game, and then it is a completely different team that takes the spring practice field in '11.
I loved Lloyd and will always honor him. But the program was not moving forward with him. RR is moving forward.
LC took the #5 team in the country who had the following individuals on offense:
Chad Henne - 4 year starter at QB
Mike Hart - holder of all sorts of records as RB
Jake Long - #1 draft pick at LT
Mario Maningham - starting WR for NYG
and a JR/SR laden defense that was ranked in the top 5 the previous year and lost to APP STATE at HOME!!!!
Does our situation today compare at all to that list? Hell no. FR/SO all over the place including QB.
Did you really expect our team to be awesome this year starting 9 FR/SO on D and with a 1st year starter at QB (only a SO)? If so, you really need help setting your expectations.
but in 2007, Michigan did not play as good as teams that Iowa, MSU, and PSU are....well yeah probably 1 of 3so I duuno.....but we are a decent team go blue!
Drunkese? But if you think Iowa, MSU and PSU compare to National Championship playing OSU, should have been the best team in the country Oregon, and Wisconsin, give me some of what you have.
1996: 8-4 overall; 5-3 Big Ten (T-5th)
1997: 12-0 overall; 8-0 Big Ten (1st)
1998: 10-3 overall; 7-1 Big Ten (T-1st)
1999: 10-2 overall; 6-2 Big Ten (T-2nd)
2000: 9-3 overall; 6-2 Big Ten (T-1st)
2001: 8-4 overall; 6-2 Big Ten (2nd)
2002: 10-3 overall; 6-2 Big Ten (2nd)
2003: 10-3 overall; 7-1 Big Ten (1st)
2004: 9-3 overall; 7-1 Big Ten (T-1st)
2005: 7-5 overall; 5-3 Big Ten (T-3rd)
2006: 11-2 overall; 7-1 Big Ten (T-2nd)
They are on the way back up. I expect ten wins next season and for the first time in a while that is a realistic expectation.
you had more than 300 points.
If we fired our coach every time we went 8-4, all of our coaches would be 1-and-outs. Whenever you have a new coach, you have to have some growing pains (not to mention if the system is changed). If there were no growing pains, you'd have no reason to fire the previous coach!
you could say that from two years ago, and last year that our expectations are CLEARLY on the rise! Go Blue beat wiscy!
We really need to get back on top i cannot take it anymore. However fine win today for playing poorly.
Right... Because we were also on top previously with Llyod, we won a national championship 13 years ago and in between those a bunch of 2-3 loss seasons. I love Llyod and respect him so much for the way he represented Michigan, but there is no way you can say we were on top. You do realize Tressel owned him right.
If you had told me two months ago that we would lose Wolfolk and Floyd and would be starting 3 freshman in the secondary, I would never have believed that 7-5 was possible. This season is a credit to the leadership and character of RR and the players. Years from now, we are going to look back on this team with real fondness. Especially when they pull off the stunner against an unwary OSU.
Two months ago was mid-September. We'd already lost Woolfolk and beaten UConn and Notre Dame.
I know, I don't get it either but it's already November 13.
What can I say? Time moves faster than it used to...
You mean 10-3 is possible.
McFarlin's back!?! Sweet ... -1.
I think we misunderestimated PSU, especially at night in Happy Valley. They are currently smoking OSU in the 'Shoe. I don't expect that to continue, but they just aren't a bad team any more. I don't know what happened to Royster, but he's his old self, and they just look good.
We definitely misunderestimated their strategery.
They may not win, but they are looking very good. Understudy walk-on is playing very nicely [again] against a defense ranked a bit higher than ours, and it's in that red-and-gray place.
EDIT: Hmmm. It didn't take me 13 mins to write this, but apparently someone got here first.
isn't the team we were expecting to play. I think we would have beat PSU if Bolden would have played.
The fact of the matter is, we will have to win games like this every year. This is the Big Ten there will be cold, nasty day, but this team did not fold they stayed strong, and the d won the game. I for one can not be more pleased with RR after this game, his team has won in close games (3ot vs ILL, ND,UMASS) but he has also led this team in nasty weather and won games when his O is not working.
For those that still want RR fired look at the games around the Big Ten today, Iowa lost to NW and ILL lost to MINN, RR is going to loose games in the Big Ten. However we are 7-3 that is on pace with alot of Loyd Carr years, this team is going to be great.
For the record, I'm drunk so there is my rant. Also there was a user with the name Beeline who kept saying fire RR in the live post, my message to you Mr. Beeline shut the fuck up or go find a new team to root for, I for one am a Michigan fan till the day I die, and no matter who the coach is I will root for them to succeed.
EDIT: Where are you BeeLine, I want to see what you have to say now?
Dude, spot on.
Things are getting better, not worse: the first sign of an improving ball club is securing/pulling out close victories. The offense had a bad day, but the defense stepped it up and held Purdue to under 300 yards.
The important thing from here is to finish up strong, win at least one more game (bowl or reg season) and get momentum rolling for next season. Go Blue and Hold the Rope!
we have beat a 4 win team that may start the worst QB in the country, a 5 win team that just got beat by the worst team in the conference, and an Indiana team that has yet to win a Big Ten game? Wake me when we beat someone worth a crap.
Let me say this---we have an entire offense in place that is made up of a good mix of Carr and Rich's players, yet we are so gawd awful on defense and it is just bad luck and not on RR?
So if we lose the next two we have beaten 1 team (Minny 08) with a winning record in Big Ten play in 3 years. Real progress.
Let me say this---you are a troll and a dick.
Wait -- "a good mix" of Carr and Rodriguez's players on offense? I suppose you could count Molk, Hemingway, Webb and Stonum as Lloyd's recruits, but Schilling and Dorrestein are the only offensive players who actually played under Carr.
I stopped reading after that, but I'm pretty sure the rest of your post is just rabble rabble UNACCEPTABLE rabble.
Considering that we lost to those teams with losing records over the last two years, that IS progress. Are we elite? No. Are we decent? Yes. Have we improved? Yes. Will we continue to improve? Yes.
7-5 is acceptable for this year given that we have a horrible defense and special teams and most of our team are freshmen and sophomores. If we go 7-5 in 2012 when most of our team are juniors and seniors, then we can talk.
You can only win the games you play. So what if we beat Indiana, Illinois, and Purdue. We played Indiana, Illinois, and Purdue. We can't help that they don't have the best resumes.
Dang, haters gon hate today!
I was listening to Gameday this morning and they were talkiing about the implosion at Texas... one item mentioned was the entitlement attitude of the players and the lack of leadership on the team among other things.
The inference was that the team did not have heart. Players were not working for their wins and fans were expecting wins just because they are Texas.
Our team has come a long way from this attitude. They never stop working. They have a competitive attitude, desire and work ethic. RR is recruiting high character, gym rat players, and leaders are stepping up all over the place on the team..the team, the team.
This is a long term culture change that really will pay of in developing a sustainable championship caliber program. The hard part is getting there-- ther harder part is keeping it once you've got it.
Barwis is a good guard against complacency.
Would you rather go the Gator Bowl or the Texas Bowl?
I just hope we don't end up in the Insight Bowl, tthe game starts at 10pm
Don't shit on the Muppets or our parade.
and I enjoy living it.
Offense: Carr---Perry, Huyge, Schilling, Koger (Lloyd recruit), Hemmingway, Molk(Lloyd recruit), Stonum(Lloyd recruit). Please get your point right if you are going to talk down to people. That is why this board is becoming a laughingstock. People on this board sound just like the ones of GBW, brainwashed fools who believe one thing and anyone who opposes that view is not "All In" or a "hater".
Again, reality of the suituation is we have beat 1 team in 3 years in the Big Ten with a winning record. Wake me when we beat a team that is worth a crap. Hell even crappy Purdue last season beat a team they had no right being on the field with.
I will take the win, good for us, we are 7-3, lets see how we do the next two v good competition.
We just won. Can you save this horseshit for a few days please and just be happy?
(Vegas) odds are we'll have two weeks to be unhappy coming up. Enjoy it while you can and have some hope before it's crushed.
Your "reality" is sad. I'm not even negging you anymore, because I just feel sorry for your distorted view and the inability to enjoy a victory.
yes, and you are what you are
We won a Big 10 road game playing without Martin and Mouton on defense and you have the balls to come here and post this garbage? GTFO
it doesn't sound like you enjoy living in it
if you expected any team since 2008 to be legitimately good. This board has spent ample time explaining why this team could have possibly fallen off after 2007, yet you're too busy to read it. So please take some time from Imaginationland to educate yourself before continuing to post, or just stop posting.
FYI, both Big Ten victories in 2008 (Wisconsin and Minnesota) were teams with winning records. Please get your point right if you are going to talk down to people .
 Direct quote, your post above.
correction---WIsconsin was 3-5 big ten
I have read this board. I appreciate the time and effort brian puts into all his stats and such, but I don't buy it all and his perspective I don't put a lot of stock in. I talk to real insiders and people who coach and are around the program.
Also, Minnesota was 3-5 in the Big Ten in 2008, so that means Michigan has beaten 0 Big Ten teams with winning Big Ten records since 2008. So your post is still wrong.
Rather than bicker back and forth about it, I would like you to rebuild your point total and make a diary that details what exactly "real insiders and people who coach and are around the program" say about the program. A recorded interview or podcast would be great material to share with the sheep that mindlessly follow Brian, and are thus uneducated. Or start your own blog, which seeks to educate people about the truth regarding how the program is really coming along since it is clear that Misopogon's Decimated Defense diaries must too be misguided.
Finally, with regards to Dave Brandon looking at how Rich Rodriguez has never beaten a Big Ten team with a winning record... doesn't progress matter to him? Where the team is headed, the projected winning level in 1-2 years? The fact that the offense loses only a single decent offensive lineman from the starting lineup, and the defense is playing 9 freshmen in the 2-deep means there is a lot of reason to think the team will continue to improve in the next couple years. That should verify that Dave Brandon's comments of being in full support of Rich Rodriguez are indeed valid. The only thing I can imagine keeping Michigan from improving is if players keep leaving; perhaps one of your "real insiders" can tell us whether or not someone in the coaching staff is the source of this.
though I did say in the first post I could be wrong on Minnesota.
I've ran in the same circles as Sam Webb, who I consider to be a real insider. I met him in Akron at a 7-on-7 when he was there to watch Bryce McNeal, Corey Brown, and the Bell kid from PA. I talk to coaches that breakdown the film and then review it, not just a person who runs a blog (who does a pretty darn good job).
I didn't say Brian doesn't do good work, he does, but I don't share his same perspective, and everyone that reads his info doesn't either. A lot of people who enjoy his information stay away from this board because of the atmosphere on the boards.
You don't think RR is at all responsible for the attrition that has occured under him?
I would encourage you to check out GBMW if you want people who give you a real objective analysis,

Is anyone else picturing Chris Farley in Billy Madison?
All of this crap to get in a plug for GBMW? No sugarcoat?
He follows recruiting well, but he doesn't have a lot more inside knowledge than a lot of people on this site. And he's a far bigger homer than Brian. Webb's a good guy, and a good supporter, but there are a LOT of people who know more about Michigan Football than him.
According to who? MLive? Rivals message board posters? RCMB? CFN?
Perhaps it's news to you, but when you piss in the punchbowl and drop a deuce on the wedding cake, for some odd reason people tend to resent it.
drop a deuce on the wedding cake
You're killing me.
Without suggesting that the last 2 seasons were good, or that this one is great, when viewed objectively, for the sake of perspective I just want to observe that since 1983, USC has had 4 .500 seasons and 3 losing seasons. I think our numbers are 1 and 2.
I don't really know what this is meant to prove, other than we should be more grateful for what we have, or more appreciative of how hard it is to win consistently, or more hopeful that we're not all that far off the top again, or yeah things can go from great to awful back to great (and back again) pretty quickly, or something like that.
Or maybe it really doesn't prove anything at all other than that I have too much time on my hands.
we won the game, not with the way we won it. Can you please learn to use some language other then that of a 15 year-old who thinks it is cool to curse in front of his friends. You have yet to add anthing with substance, at least bring up a point.
I am being objective and looking at the big picture, not at just today.
What is the average IQ score of the people on this board? Attack me because I don't share your same views.
I am happy we won, a win is a win, but we just beat one if not the worst team in the conference at this point and time. I am not doing flips over this win.
In one more semester I will have my masters in athletic administration, from my perspective I tend to look at things the way an AD would. Would DB be happy about this win, sure. Would he be going around acting like we won the super bowl, doubt it. You see AD's look at things through a much different complex perspective; much like a business model. The ultimate big picture is what DB is looking at, and if you think that he is not looking at the fact we have beat just 1 team with a winning record in the big ten, then you are nuts.
Like I said, in two weeks when the season is over I will be very interested to see how DB feels about our season.
I'm glad you will never be the AD at Michigan!
we should have never went 3-9 or 5-7.
Think about it like this, if you were the AD and you were hiring someone three years ago would you really hire them if they said it will take 4 years to make you respectable? Tell that to Pete Carrol, Tressel,Bob Stoops,Urban Meyer, Mack Brown. If Rich really was amonst the elite then why is he not producing like the elite?
BTW, I am going to call your supervisor at walmart and tell him you are on the computer during work if you don't watch the language.
So my opinion doesn't matter because it doesn't fall in line with your genius train of thought. Riiiiiight.
Let me get this straight: you're attempting to impress us with your impending master's degree, your superior knowledge about athletic department business models, and your sophisticated grasp of the big picture. You regard MGoBlog as a laughingstock, and you're implying that MGoBloggers collectively don't have a high IQ.
Yet for some odd reason you're still posting comments here. Why are you wasting your tremendous intellect and insight? I would think that someone who was truly serious about athletic department administration would regard posting comments on sports blogs populated by people clearly beneath his intellectual prowess as a tremendous waste of time.
No my perspective comes from playing at the next level, working in an athletic department for 4 years, from working combines for scout, and plus the pending degree where I work directly with AD's across Virginia, WV, and North Carolina.
I know people who love this board who are lawyers, docs, etc. but they tend not to post because of perspectives like your buddies. If someone has a differing opinion they get labeled "hater" "troll" or not "All In" whatever that is supposed to mean. Then they get to curse themout like they are real cool people and then people on here feed on it and think it is the way you are supposed to interact on message boards. This board has become much like GBW, but I thought I would give it a try since there is good info put on here by tom and brian. Just a shame the posters aren't as tolerant as the intelligent fan base claims to be.
Is it really that much fun to have every poster say the same thing 300 verbatim
You became a troll when you uttered the words "Wal-Mart Wolverine" just showed you aren't a UofM fan and probably never have been.
we use on another board for people who can't seem to carry on a conversation on another board.
I am a fan, love UM, but I love them enough to look at things from an objective perspective of what is best for the program in the long term.
Plus my bank accout says different everymonth when Michigan takes money out of it.
I have to jump in here. You are not being "intelligent". You are being a troll. There are MANY people here who have voiced MANY negative opinions about RichRod, Greg Robinson, and the team in general. If it's done in an INTELLIGENT manner, it is absolutely tolerated.
You came into the "congrats RichRod" an hour after a win to piss in everyone's cheerios, which is why you are getting negged into oblivion. Oh, we're not as good as we were under Carr? Thanks for the insider info, future AD. All of your argiements have been hashed, re-hashed and re-re-hashed literally 1000 times for the past 2 years. We haven't beaten good teams. Our standards are lower. We get it.
We won a road game in the Big Ten in November. This has generally been a difficult thing for Michigan to do, even under Carr. If you're a fan, take some time to actually enjoy it. I'm sure that's what our AD is doing right now.
Should guarantee you an internship at a division 3 school. Not sure why you don't think there are those with the same or better degrees on here. And people who know more people in the athletic department than you do. You might just be comparing your dick size at a porn star convention.
There's no need for you to tell us about your administration degree that you're currently persuing at Monroe community college. You're previous post here give us a sound idea already of what kind of doucher you are.
my only other post on here was about Duke Tailgates. I gave accurate info because my wife is in her 3rd year of law school at Duke. I can assure you I don't go to Monroe CC, if that even exists or if you are trying to be humorous.
If you complained after UMass you are probably sane.
I may be an idiot, but you have low standards.
Just shut the fuck up. You need to enjoy the wins and stop looking at all the stats, the game is played on the field, in which we just won. If you just look at stats explain to me how NW beat Iowa, or Minn beat ILL, this is football you celebrate the wins you bitch about the losses, we won so be happy, asshole
Dr. Saturday put it best:
All things considered, any game in which you wrap up a winning season and all but assure your beleaguered head coach will still have a job in 2011 is a good one.
Also, Trolls- bite me.
Sometimes, ugly can be beautiful....even without the beer goggles.
Looks like the haters are coming out in force - just take it as a sign of our success...haters gonna hate - no point in getting exercised over it
Sorry, couldn't resist!
the last couple weeks have finally proven that we can play bad and still win
Just a few weeks ago Rich Rod said "We aren't good enough to win when we make mistakes". Well, the last two weeks we've made plenty of mistakes, but we've pulled out two tough wins. I see that as improvement.
Completely agree, especially in regards to today's game.
that we lost Denard, Tate, and Devin. That is basically what has happened to Purdont. I am not putting a lot of stock in this win. I will take it, and if you are well that is great for you. I am not saying you are wrong I am just choosing not to think the same way you do.
You just can't shut your mouth, can you?
I should just shut up because the internet tough guy knows how to say bad words. Walmart Wolverines gotta love em
I thought the defense would progress a bit more through the season but injuries and youth have set it back a bit. There also may be some defensive coaching issues that I'll let the head coach resolve! It would be great to get another win! If the offense plays a perfect game next week against WI and we can get ahead and stay ahead we will have a chance. I hope we play our best game of the year against OSU!
Happy Panda plus...
RR haters should just give it up now. He's coming back next year. Nice to see the team win ugly under difficult circumstances. Starting to see some defensive potential for next year.
the RR is gonna get fired meme has played itself out
Here's one way of looking at it: everyone agrees that the offense had a poor day. But we still moved the ball for 400 yards. Despite five turnovers. In a monsoon. That's not nothing.
Finished article? Of course not. Moving in the right direction? Definitely.
A tough day for the haters, mind you.
Ask Ohio State right now.
They're trailing 3-14 to in the Horseshoe to a walkon QB.
We are in the midst of a novel, if you will. We read the back-cover and foreward and were intrigued. The first couple chapters were a little slow because they were defining the characters and setting up the plot. The next few chapters kind of sucked and some people wanted to put the book down. Others felt like they had devoted this much time reading it that it would be a waste to put it down now.
Lo and behold, the last couple chapters have become intriguing.....the pages are starting to turn a little faster and the plot is thickening.
I'm glad I didn't put the book down. I'm excited to keep reading because it looks, to me, like a possible best seller.
