Kevin Wilson: new OC at OSU

Submitted by Leaders And Best on

Kevin Wilson officially announced as the new OC at OSU. That was fast. This is probably why Ed Warinner is gone to Minnesota.

Welcome, Coach Wilson!#GoBucks #9Strong

How are you going to seriously play the unbiased card when your whole shtick is pretending Urban Meyer is afraid of Jim Harbaugh and runs a gimmick offense?

I am very aware OSU had no ability to move the ball for three quarters. Were flat-out dominted. Where was your defense to shut down Meyer's gimmick in the 4th and OT, though? I mean you blame the refs, and that's your right, but you're upset at them for a missed DPI on OSU and on a 50/50 spot call. I can see your point on those two calls, but that didn't cause Michigan to get outgained by 100 yards in the 4th.

OSU has owned Michigan for the past 15 years because they had the superior team (talent and/or coaching) in 12 or so of those years.  OSU deserved to win all those games, including 2006 where the game was not as close as the 3 point OSU win imo.

This year was a travesty...there were not just 2 missed calls as is the narrative OSU fans and the B1G likes to sell.  There were 3 egregious PI's missed, one early in the game where he just straight up throws the player down, another where Butt gets tackled as the ball is still 5 yards away from him, and of course the OT PI which is always a PI, not a judgment call.

Meanwhile, Barret chucks a ball 6 feet over Samuel's head and gets a PI in the 4th quarter - now that is a "judgment" call.

Dude, unbiased reporters were tweeting and posting all throughout the game about how poorly and one-sided the officiating was.  Get outside your OSU bubble and you would see that its not only UM fans that saw the officiating absurdity.

The point that if UM was 1) better 2) didn't make mistakes 3) could close out games are all noted - but none of these points disqualify them from getting a fair shake in how the game is reffed.

1 penalty for 1 yard in all of regulation, as self admitted Buckeye fan reffing the game? Come on dude, take off the Scarlett and Grey glasses.

If you're older than 17 years old and this is the way you communicate, you should probably kill yourself.

When osu's offense is doing well it's because of meyer and when its not it's the oc's fault. I really feel the hire only matters if they can have their o-line back and elliot. I just don't see that happening chief. They have not replaced those players and samuel is gone know. Defense good but offense noooooo.

Kevin Wilson is a genius at offense...

Kevin Wilson Era Offense

2016 – 67th
2015 – 19th
2014 – 75th
2013 – 16th
2012 – 54th
2011 – 85th

Average Offense – 53rd

Pre Kevin Wilson Era Offense
2010 – 68th
2009 – 87th
2008 – 84th
2007 – 61st
Average Offense – 75th

I just hope that Ohio State recruits a Pokemon to play QB for Wilson, because that was truly entertaining.

Anybody that isn't an OSU fan was calling out how ridiculous the officiating was during the game.  You got bailed out.  Your team was one dimensional and was then exposed again on the national stage - only this time no refs to bail you out.

Gimmick offense exposed.

You know, I think Michigan was a better team than OSU this year. I also think they outplayed OSU in Columbus, and if OSU played them again, they would lose.

Alas, if you truly "dominate" someone, you should be ahead by enough points that a missed PI call on a 5 yard slant doesn't cause you to lose the game. Michigan didn't put OSU away when it had 1,000 different chances to do so. They got steamrolled 125 to 5 in total offense in the 4th quarter. So much so that OSU ended up with more total yards for the game, which was unfathomable to me sitting there in the middle of the 3rd quarter watching OSU go 3 and out every drive.

So I don't know what to tell you. Quite frankly, I'm glad you believe the refs made the difference between a win and a loss for Michigan, because that way the game will haunt you forever. You probably never think about the 2015 asskicking in Ann Arbor, but I bet you think about 2016 in Columbus often. Good stuff.

I still don't see how this is a good fit. He's a fantastic offensive mind, but  his style of spread is so different than Urban's someone is going to have to compromise in some significant ways. Is Wilson converting them to a passing spread/base zone running team like IU? Or is Urban going to control most of it still with the power spread and just have Wilson take care of the passing game? None of their QB's seem like great fits for a Wilson offense, maybe Martell but he might be injured a lot. Will be interesting to see.

What your idea of a prototypical Kevin Wilson QB? If you're looking for a pocket passer with a strong arm, we have both Joe Burrow and Dwayne Haskins in the QB room.

Plus, JT Barrett has shown the ability to pass for 2800+ yards in 2014, so the potential is there... It is a matter if it can be coaxed out again, and no better place to start than a new OC and new QB coach (Ryan Day).

In terms of the styles not fitting, as long as Kevin Wilson doesn't completely abandon the power-run game, I think the two offenses will mesh all right. Wilson had a 2000+ yard rusher and three 1000+ yard rushers the last 3 seasons. The man knows how to pound the rock.

as to Wilson being problematic. Although our defense improved dramatically under Brown, giving up only a few chunk plays by a team loaded with h.s. AAs, adding Wilson to a group of coaches who have produced one of the most impressive winning pcts in cfb over the past 15 years or so could, and actually should result in some wrinkles possibly not seen merely because Wilson never had the talent he'll be working with this season.

You are absolutely right, imo as to what he brings to the party. Although his offenses use the spread formation his power running game relies on traditional power running schemes. Considering that Urban has almost always favored speed and quickness, unless you get both in one package, i.e., Zeke, it can't be denied the cumulative experience on how to best maximize the spread offense is impressive. Have no idea as to the personalities and whether or not this will present a problem or provide a smooth working relationship. What can't be denied, however, is the combined knowledge is truly impressive.

What a joke that OSU would fire a coach a month and a half after being fired for player mistreatment.  Might as well hire Art Briles for Director of Female Campus Saftey...

Dones't surprise me considering they worship a coach who in his last game punch an apposing player...

But at the same time player mistreatment is a serious issue.  Serious enough for Indiana to fire him.  Again both are really shitty issues, and coaches don't deserve to be at major schools.

I'm more shocked OSU would make the hire.  I feel like plenty of people here would be making a big deal if Harbaugh hired him with the speculation around his IU firing.

So Kevin Wilson's contract at Indiana stated that the buyout would be the collective base pay of all the remaining years of the contract. Wilson's base pay was $542,000 a year with 5 years remaining making his buyout ~$2.7 million.

HOWEVER... The buyout had a clause that said if Wilson found another job then IU would only owe him the difference in yearly base pay. For example, if Ohio State were to pay Kevin Wilson more than $542,000 a year to be their OC, then IU would have owed Wilson nothing.

Ed Warinner was making $654,000 a year as OSU's OC, and that's not even close to what other top programs pay for their coordinators. So unless Kevin Wilson was planning on just sitting at his house for 5 years and collecting that buyout, it was probably a smarter decision to get at least a guaranteed 1 year's worth of salary. So as long as Wilson landed a OC job that paid more than $542K within a year, he still comes out on top vs. his original buyout.

It was a quick response and there is no spell here through Chrome on my Mac.  Hope this is better for you.  If I could delete the post above I would.

Wilson and Meyer will have no problem collaborating and working together. If there's one thing Wilson can do its call plays and coach offense. You would be a fool to not be nervous over this hire. Don Browns pretty awesome though
