Kenpom now has M B-ball game Feb 3 @ NW back up on team sheet

You need to be a subscriber to see, but when games are cancelled they are removed from a team sheet and W/L prediction total. He only puts them back up once they are rescheduled - and whatta ya know our game vs. Northwestern is back on the sheet. Does he know something we don't or is this a glitch?

Still ppd on the Michigan athletics page.

Honestly, I would rather make certain that we get as many of the ppd games rescheduled rather than worrying about which team we get first out of the state-imposed (an unnecessary - unless someone involved in the team actually tests positive) shutdown.

Officially not ordered/mandated, but for the university leaders to go against the state health department recommendation would be career suicide.

The health dept cast the die for them - which I wouldn't find objectionable if it was more supported by the data (as the shutdowns were in March/April).

No, they didnt "cast" anything.

The health department recommends against indoor dining -- yet tomorrow, thousands of restaurants in MI are going to open their dining rooms under certain guidelines (e.g., 25% capacity); others will not. That's because they are all weighing the pros/cons and taking ownership of the decision. None are comitting career suicide.

UM absolutely could, and should, have publicly released key health data (e.g., "We have tested both the hockey and the basketball team for 10 straight days with no positives; additionally,  our investigation has shown zero contact with any infected individuals"; etc) presented by one of the dozens of highly-paid, highly-skilled, world-renowned doctors they have on campus and announced their decision to move forward this week, after consulting with opponents like Northwestern. The MDHHS could also be notified to confirm no laws are being broken and see if they have any specific, data-based objections to UM's analysis and process.

Instead, UM has been stuck in "woe is me" mode (see Warde's podcast w Jansen) and refused to act like a world-class institution with the resources to make tough, smart decisions.

Or maybe the school, with its world-class medical experts, made a reasoned and responsible judgment when it comes to making unpaid students play a contact game during a deadly pandemic.

It’s just a game. In a pandemic.
Don’t be a selfish douche.

One or more UM athletes flew in from UK with the new variant. A couple weeks later there were 22 positives in the athletic department. I suspect that there was transmission beyond the original teams. This was probably more than the minimum caution required by what we have absolute certainty about, but doing the minimum hasn't been real effective.

WSJ had a story yesterday about how the NFL really tightened its COVID protocols after a couple of teams had big outbreaks. Worth a read. In a season where almost everyone will postpone some games for COVID, taking a break to make sure you don't have a big outbreak brewing isn't a horrible idea. Hopefully they incorporate what the NFL learned.

I doubt kenpom has any insider info, but I will say that the lights in the PDC (which are usually always on) have been off since the shutdown. But when I drove past today, they were back on for the first time since the shutdown

If the team has

A) Isolated for 7 days
B) All passed a recent COVID test

Then by CDC guidelines, they are good to go.  And that is assuming they were exposed, which no one actually knows.

Any additional delay, while it may reduce risk by a very marginal amount, is not likely to make a big difference in safety.  I understand the heath department recommendation, and I understand caution, but it seems to fly in the face of the CDC recommendations.

It seems like the UM AD could use CDC recommendations to give themselves cover here.  I don't want our team put at any additional risk than is necessary, but I honestly believe most of the experts would tell you that a full week of isolation plus a negative test is not being risky.

As previously suggested, looks like the database where KenPom pulls in his schedules goofed and mistakenly re-added the Northwestern game. It is now once again off of Michigan's KP page (and shows as postponed again on the Yahoo Sports app):
