Julius Welschof update?

Submitted by garde on December 19th, 2018 at 5:10 PM

Myself and others marveled at this kids's athletic ability on his training videos. Obviously, it's going to take time for him to adjust coming from Germany, but does anybody have any current info on him? How did he hold up this year in practice? Coaches thoughts? etc etc etc

thanks

His recruiting profile showed him as 6-6, 253# when he came to Michigan.

With Chase and Rashan both moving on after the bowl game, I would think there’s a chance for him to see some minutes next season!

I can’t wait to see what Vilain is capabable of if healthy next year. I know some people tried hinting at him being a part of the attrition this offseason, but he has a real opportunity on a top 10 team next year and I don’t see him moving on because of his injuries.

Some of our young DEs made some plays this year and got some experience they will pay off next year.

I remember Uche’s sacks against NW and thinking, “Crap, that man is fast off the ball.”

Hutchinson causing that weird safety against Nebraska.  DEs will be a strength next year for sure.

I'd love for Vilain to break-out too, but I think that's too much wishful thinking at this point.

Between the injuries and the other guys on the D-line, I haven't heard anything about him in months. This complete silence around a former borderline 5-star is a pretty bad omen--you'd expect to hear something about his rehab or about Harbaugh liking how he's come along after the injuries but no one's heard anything. Even then, knowing how Harbaugh (kinda) punishes guys for injuries and his competition is so stiff, I think he's a lost cause.

Shame--he looked so good on signing day.

I don't see it with Juice. He's a great athlete but he's so raw, the competition level is probably still going to be too much. If he was poised to make that jump I think we would've heard more about him. I think he needs minimum one, possibly two more years. But if he puts it together, watch out. I would expect Vilain and Hutchinson to be the DE's next year, but I would guess we see a steadier rotation with Kwity Paye and Josh Uche. Welschof, Morris, Upshaw, Ojabo, and Newburg are probably only playing if something really bad happens. Lot of raw talent there, with a ton of potential, but GMatt has his work cut out for him.

Why would Vilain jump Uche and Paye? Give Uche credit for all he did to earn his field time. I would project Uche and Hutch 2.0 start at ends. The one thing the Peach Bowl will be good for is seeing projected depth chart for next fall. I would expect Ross starts in place of Bush, based on current PT.

As for JW, his frame can hold enough beef for him to play DT, though he may be too tall. But why are people giving up on players based on silence from a pretty tight-lipped staff?

People hinted at the same thing for three years when Mike McCray couldn't stay healthy. He ended up staying and have a great last two years. Furbush is another that comes to mind who recently had health issues early on and got healthy at the end. Vilain should be fine once he gets healthy.

For every Furbush and McCray there’s an Ondre Pipkins or Drake Harris who simply can’t get it going because of various ailments.

What I find interesting to talk about is what players contributed but never became stars like they should have because of injuries. There’s probably a ton we just assumed underachieved but were in reality gutting out constant injuries.

Haven't heard anything about Julius but last week Sam said that Hassan Haskins who we originally recruited as a RB has been practicing at viper and has really been turning some heads.

Just why?

We don't need more vipers. We've seen DB can pretty much take any good athlete and turn them into a stud at that spot.

We're losing Karan and we just lost Samuels (but good riddance--domestic violence is disgusting), so we really need backs. I get Charbonnet will be good, but he's not going to be ready from Day 1 in Harbaugh's overly complex offense, plus it'd be best to preserve his redshirt.

Why wouldn't Charbonnet be ready? Evans managed to play as a freshman. Charbonnet is enrolling early so he'll have plenty of time to learn the offense and grow as a player. Even if Harbaugh's offense is "complex", this isn't a PG running Beilein's offense. Even if he doesn't know every nuance, RB is a make plays position. If he can make plays, he'll play. He may not be the best at pass blocking, route running, have the best vision, etc. But if he can make plays, which by all accounts he can, he'll play. Especially when we still have Evans, Wilson and Turner at RB.

Edit: Also if ZC is as good as advertised, especially at RB, you probably don't get 5 years from him so why waste a year redshirting him?

I disagree on needing RBs.   We have....

Evans

Wilson

Turner

Haskins

Barrett

and Charbonnet incoming....

and RB is the position that a true freshman can play at a high level.

It is CB that might be a problem going forward....
