Jowon Briggs, Virginia Defensive Tackle is in the transfer portal

Was he good at Virginia? Players often transfer for reasons other than being a high 4* recruit.
November 17th, 2020 at 9:52 PM ^
20 tackles and 3 sacks this year so far. He was a starter as a sophomore. Had 19 tackles and 3 tfl while starting 7 games last year.

Nice - now I’m interested! Good info to include in your original post in the future.

Bronco Mendenhall's highest-rated recruit. Kid is playing and playing well. I wonder what is going on there?
November 18th, 2020 at 9:04 AM ^
Probably wants to set up to play for the next UM HC L Fickell.
November 18th, 2020 at 11:22 AM ^
He probably will play for Fickell--but at Cincinnati.
November 17th, 2020 at 9:48 PM ^
i'd rather get another 6'1 unathletic AAC corner
November 17th, 2020 at 9:50 PM ^
Does anyone know how a Cincinnati guy ended up at UVA? That is not a common connection.
November 17th, 2020 at 9:54 PM ^
I actually remember Michigan recruiting him and some of his cb picks were for ND. Not sure how or why he picked Virginia though.
November 17th, 2020 at 10:22 PM ^
A couple of years ago UVA's then-new coach (Bronco Mendenhall) had a pretty good team. I'm not surprised he pulled some good 'croots. Thoughts at the time were that UVA was the new kid on the block in the ACC. But like everything else in the ACC, UVA is, indeed, a basketball school.

Crazy! We are too!
November 18th, 2020 at 8:11 AM ^
We should have subs!
November 18th, 2020 at 8:58 AM ^
It’s not that far away. And it’s a great school with a nice campus.
November 18th, 2020 at 9:44 AM ^
Walnut Hills is probably the best public school in the state of Ohio (yeah, yeah, I know) and has competitive entrance requirements. I would think that the academics at UVA were a definite factor.
November 18th, 2020 at 10:03 AM ^
A public school with entrance requirements? How does that work?
November 18th, 2020 at 10:18 AM ^
It's fairly common. But I can try to break it down for you.
It's a public school.
There are entrance requirements to attend.
November 18th, 2020 at 10:47 AM ^
No need to be a prick. It's not a stupid question because the vast majority of public schools in our country have no entrance requirements and you can attend purely based on where you live. Is this a magnet school? If so, that's an important distinction that could have cleared things up for the poster you replied to, instead of being a jerk. Try that next time.
November 18th, 2020 at 10:30 AM ^
It's part of Cincinnati Public Schools. Students from across the district indicate interest. If there are more students than seats, they take a test or something like that. I don't have kids, so I mostly zone out when my co-workers talk about this stuff.
November 18th, 2020 at 1:44 PM ^
you sound like a good friend
November 18th, 2020 at 3:32 PM ^
What? Did you say something?
November 17th, 2020 at 9:57 PM ^
Isn't there a 3 star DE we can try to bulk up instead?
November 17th, 2020 at 10:03 PM ^
You can't forget that they have to be semi-new to football as well.
November 17th, 2020 at 10:06 PM ^
Actually yes. 247 had an article that Michigan was looking into Andre Porter, a SDE committed to Boston College. Only he’s already 6’3 300lbs so more of a DT already.
I don’t know why Michigan never went after Dorien Ford or Taleeq Robbins out of Pa. Both are DTs in a nearby state and Michigan offered both but never pursued hard. Ford is now committed to Pitt. Robbins looks like he’ll end up at Ole Miss.
November 17th, 2020 at 11:03 PM ^
Porter is... interesting. Half his most recent highlight tape is him at RB and FB. Needless to say, he would be a pretty raw player, even if he is close to his college playing size.
November 18th, 2020 at 9:24 AM ^
Or FB
November 17th, 2020 at 10:18 PM ^
Sounds like a great get for fickell or in Columbus. I can't fathom a recruit in the transfer portal currently wanting to come into another turbulent situation. I'll be happy to be proven wrong though.
November 17th, 2020 at 10:22 PM ^
Any chance we can get him last week?
November 17th, 2020 at 10:25 PM ^
Definitely interested
November 17th, 2020 at 10:32 PM ^
Yeah we’ll have some of that
November 17th, 2020 at 10:41 PM ^
Nice. Have to assume if the coaches don't at least throw their hat in the ring on this kid, they have completely checked out.
November 17th, 2020 at 11:35 PM ^
i think we should go after everyone because there will he attrition when the coaching staff gets the boot
November 18th, 2020 at 2:31 AM ^
But probably not as much as when our staff is in place every year...
November 18th, 2020 at 1:38 AM ^
Do not f*ck with my emotions like this
November 18th, 2020 at 2:37 AM ^
Wish we wouldn't have given Rashad Weaver the cold shoulder....
November 18th, 2020 at 11:26 AM ^
Yep. He was committed to us and then we told him "thanks but no thanks."
I'm gonna be straight. I didn't like how we handled that. At the time, most fans didn't care because he was rated a 3 star. But those of us who actually watched his tape could see that he had a lot of physical tools so there was a high chance he would develop well. And he did.
Now? We look like schmucks considering where our DL is now.
November 18th, 2020 at 7:34 AM ^
More guys are more guys, but based on the fact that he's already in the portal, he's probably more Soloman than Hurst.

In re-watching the time Mazi was on the field (interested to see what UFR showed) he seemed way better at atleast holding the line than Hinton and Jeter have been. On one of the TD's Hinton was blown back 5 yards into the endzone and put on his ass. I know it is early, and he will basically be a sophomore next year, but he is trending to be a major, major bust.
November 18th, 2020 at 9:35 AM ^
I know it is early, and he will basically be a sophomore next year, but he is trending to be a major, major bust.
Jeter, Solomon, Hinton, Dwumfor, Smith, & Irving-Bey so far are all underachieving and really hurting the program. It all starts up front in the middle of the line. If you can't hold up there, everything behind them and around them falls apart trying to compensate. This is a major recruiting problem.
Dwumfor transferred. Irving-Bey took a medical if I recall. We hoped Smith & Hinton would be the fix and they are not, at least not yet and my hunch is never or they would already be flashing and just inconsistent. Unfortunately, at least Hinton, is consistently just not that good. Smith still may turn out to be good in another year or two. Jeter just didn't pan out. He was an ND flip that played SDE in HS. He was always a big guy, but lacked strength and pass rush moves in his recruiting profile. I just don't think he has the strength or leverages to play DT effectively and lacks the speed or explosion to play SDE. He's a man with a good frame who simply doesn't translate to P5 football. Kemp was also a HS SDE and is playing out of position. Solomon was simply a bust. Hinton was also an SDE in HS. He lacked the sort of offers you'd expect from a 5-star initially, but got more as his recruitment went on when he switched from SDE to DT. From his eval you'd think he'd be better, but maybe he just needs more time to develop at DT.
All in all we just didn't have any true DTs that panned out between 2016-2019. That's a problem. I know there aren't a lot of top 10 DTs in the region, but there are plenty of functional DTs that were not elite recruits that are playing at places like MSU, Wiscy, PSU, etc. that we'd happily take, but for whatever reason either did not recruit them or they did not chose UM.
November 18th, 2020 at 9:49 AM ^
I'm glad you mentioned this about Jeter. I'm amazed watching him especially when he lines up alongside Kemp. The size advantage Jeter has to Kemp is extremely noticeable; yet he gets pushed off the line much further, and much more frequently than Kemp. Jeter definitely passes the eye test, but for some reason just can't even be a "plug the gap" guy. At that size, with his recruiting rankings, and time already in the program, it just is shocking that he isn't even an average level B1G DT. Reminds me of Pipkins.
November 18th, 2020 at 8:42 AM ^
I will be sure to send this to Harbaugh immediately.
November 18th, 2020 at 10:02 AM ^
but can he play corner?!
November 18th, 2020 at 7:10 PM ^
There is a reason a lot of teams backed off him during recruiting. He takes plays off, has no motor & gets dominated by the better OL he faces. Michigan, ND, PSU, etc all backed off him.
November 19th, 2020 at 12:47 PM ^
Sounds like a coaching challenge.
