Jowon Briggs, Virginia Defensive Tackle is in the transfer portal

He was in the 2019 class, hes about 6'1.5 and 310 lbs. He was a 4 star coming out of high school in Cincinnati. He was ranked #75 on 247 and ESPN. With our extreme need for d tackles and the fact that hes regional, we need to get on him asap.

No need to be a prick. It's not a stupid question because the vast majority of public schools in our country have no entrance requirements and you can attend purely based on where you live. Is this a magnet school? If so, that's an important distinction that could have cleared things up for the poster you replied to, instead of being a jerk. Try that next time.

Actually yes. 247 had an article that Michigan was looking into Andre Porter, a SDE committed to Boston College. Only he’s already 6’3 300lbs so more of a DT already.

I don’t know why Michigan never went after Dorien Ford or Taleeq Robbins out of Pa. Both are DTs in a nearby state and Michigan offered both but never pursued hard. Ford is now committed to Pitt. Robbins looks like he’ll end up at Ole Miss.

Sounds like a great get for fickell or in Columbus.   I can't fathom a recruit in the transfer portal currently wanting to come into another turbulent situation.  I'll be happy to be proven wrong though.

Yep. He was committed to us and then we told him "thanks but no thanks."

I'm gonna be straight. I didn't like how we handled that. At the time, most fans didn't care because he was rated a 3 star. But those of us who actually watched his tape could see that he had a lot of physical tools so there was a high chance he would develop well. And he did.

Now? We look like schmucks considering where our DL is now.

More guys are more guys, but based on the fact that he's already in the portal, he's probably more Soloman than Hurst.

In re-watching the time Mazi was on the field (interested to see what UFR showed) he seemed way better at atleast holding the line than Hinton and Jeter have been. On one of the TD's Hinton was blown back 5 yards into the endzone and put on his ass. I know it is early, and he will basically be a sophomore next year, but he is trending to be a major, major bust.

I know it is early, and he will basically be a sophomore next year, but he is trending to be a major, major bust.

Jeter, Solomon, Hinton, Dwumfor, Smith, & Irving-Bey so far are all underachieving and really hurting the program.  It all starts up front in the middle of the line.  If you can't hold up there, everything behind them and around them falls apart trying to compensate.  This is a major recruiting problem.

Dwumfor transferred.  Irving-Bey took a medical if I recall.  We hoped Smith & Hinton would be the fix and they are not, at least not yet and my hunch is never or they would already be flashing and just inconsistent.  Unfortunately, at least Hinton, is consistently just not that good.  Smith still may turn out to be good in another year or two.  Jeter just didn't pan out.  He was an ND flip that played SDE in HS.  He was always a big guy, but lacked strength and pass rush moves in his recruiting profile.  I just don't think he has the strength or leverages to play DT effectively and lacks the speed or explosion to play SDE.  He's a man with a good frame who simply doesn't translate to P5 football.  Kemp was also a HS SDE and is playing out of position.  Solomon was simply a bust.  Hinton was also an SDE in HS.  He lacked the sort of offers you'd expect from a 5-star initially, but got more as his recruitment went on when he switched from SDE to DT.  From his eval you'd think he'd be better, but maybe he just needs more time to develop at DT.

All in all we just didn't have any true DTs that panned out between 2016-2019.  That's a problem.  I know there aren't a lot of top 10 DTs in the region, but there are plenty of functional DTs that were not elite recruits that are playing at places like MSU, Wiscy, PSU, etc. that we'd happily take, but for whatever reason either did not recruit them or they did not chose UM.

I'm glad you mentioned this about Jeter. I'm amazed watching him especially when he lines up alongside Kemp. The size advantage Jeter has to Kemp is extremely noticeable; yet he gets pushed off the line much further, and much more frequently than Kemp. Jeter definitely passes the eye test, but for some reason just can't even be a "plug the gap" guy. At that size, with his recruiting rankings, and time already in the program, it just is shocking that he isn't even an average level B1G DT. Reminds me of Pipkins.

There is a reason a lot of teams backed off him during recruiting. He takes plays off, has no motor & gets dominated by the better OL he faces. Michigan, ND, PSU, etc all backed off him.
