Jordan Poole: Beilein leaving etc Nba playoffs snowflakes

Submitted by mbrummer on April 21st, 2022 at 10:57 PM

I don't watch much NBA, honestly if I wanted to watch a glorified  3 point contest...I digress

After watching  2 halves of Jordan Poole in the playoffs, I totally understand why Beilein left for the Cavs.

Sophomore Poole with a year of Camp Sanderson and a modicum of defense? Final 4 team all over.  he would have made the leap ten fold.

But he left (not his fault he got 1st round money and is going to be a star) But it would have broke me as a coach

Yeah. I read the post. Then I read it again. And then I thought, ‘Yeah, I’ll throw my little neg on that flaming tire fire!’

Truth is that in that situation there was no wrongdoing, least of all by Poole’s family. Everyone was just trying to do the best with the cards they had been handed. There’s a lesson there for all of us. For me, for you, and for Amurrica.

Let’s pick up that ball and run with it. We can still run far, Amurrica, we can still run far. But it has to be with just a little bit of compassion, with a little more love in our hearts!

We got to see a sophomore Poole. Wasn't a Final 4 season, but a Sweet 16 trip isn't too shabby.

Yeah I'm wrong.  I'm going to claim Mandela effect. But I'm just wrong.

Didn't think it was a rant, more of a holy shit Poole is good, I would have loved to see Iggy and Poole etc back in school another year

No fault of theirs.. They got the money they deserved.  More of if I'm Beilein I understand why he left because after they left, I would have been frustrated.

I too wish we could have seen a sophomore Poole. I bet he and Iggy would have made for a good scoring combo in 2018-19.

Alas, we will never know 😢

Well, if you were WATCHING THE GAMES you could have seen a sophomore Jordan Poole. But here's a brief resume of what happened during his sophomore year from Wikipedia:

"On November 17, 2018, Poole's career-high 22 points helped Michigan defeat George Washington 84–61.[45][46] On November 28, Michigan defeated (#11/#13) North Carolina 84–67 in the ACC–Big Ten Challenge, as Poole contributed 18 points, including 5-for-8 three point shooting.[47][48] On December 1, Michigan defeated (#19/#18) Purdue 76–57 in its Big Ten Conference season opener. Michigan was led by Poole with a game-high 21 points, including 5-for-5 from three-point range.[49][50] On December 3, Poole was recognized as Big Ten Player of the Week for his performance against these two ranked teams.[51][52] On December 8, Michigan defeated South Carolina 89–78. Michigan was led by Poole with a career-high 26 points.[53][54] On December 30, Michigan defeated Binghamton 74–52. Poole posted 18 points, including a career-high six three-pointers.[55][56] On January 13, the 2018–19 Wolverines team defeated Northwestern to establish a school record for best start at 17–0 and tied the school's record 17-game win streak.[57][58] Following the season, he was a 2019 All-Big Ten honorable mention selection (coaches and media).[59][60] On March 23, Michigan defeated Florida 64–49 in the second round of the 2019 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament. Michigan was led by Poole with a game-high 19 points earning its third consecutive the Sweet 16 appearance and second consecutive one keyed by Poole.[61][62] Following the season, on April 9, 2019, Poole (along with teammates Iggy Brazdeikis and Charles Matthews) declared for the 2019 NBA draft with the intention of hiring agents.[63]."

It was fun. It was really fun. The rest of us enjoyed it.

I don't know why everyone is piling on. The guy is musing about "what could have been.." had Poole stayed (and likely others) and that he can see why it would be frustrating to recruit a guy and have him leave for the NBA well before he's reached anywhere near his potential.

Doesnt mean you can't wish that guy well but as a college coach it can still be frustrating, I imagine.

Coach Beilein spoke at my sister's graduation a handful of days before he left and he spent an inordinate amount of time talking about Jordan Poole. He referenced him by name a couple times and while each instance was usually working toward a big laugh it did feel a bit odd at the time and especially looking back. Coach Beilein is very good with an audience, as I'm sure most HCs have to be, but the first time he brought him up was in regard to "young people" making decisions and not always knowing if it's the best move at the time.

It was never mean or talking poorly about Poole but both times used in an example of a younger person having to try to always make the right decision. It felt like a bit of support and a tiny, tiny, tiny bit of sour grapes about his leaving. As I said, JB is terrific with a crowd. It was a terrific speech. He killed it and I'm sure he had spoken at a million of those ceremonies while at UM. The timing of it all just made a few awkward moments seem all the more awkward looking back when he left for The NBA a bit after that ceremony.

We got sophomore Poole.  It wasn’t that great. Poole needed to get with an NBA team ASAP.  Some players specifically have pro-game and not college-game and he was one of them.  He was not suited for the patience and precision required for a JB team either.  Poole at Kentucky might have been a different story.

Young players grow, mature and get better-more consistent. Jordan was a very gifted player when he was at Michigan. Here, the coach's most important task is to catalyze those individual talents and employ them to the benefit of the team...this did not go particularly well. Things are often not as simple as they appear. This story has many iterations.

This is definitely a take.  Not sure if I'd consider it a good one but it's definitely one.

Poole stuck around for 2 years; a big issue people had with him jumping to the NBA (and I include myself) is that he never really made that sophomore leap, instead being pretty inconsistent as an offensive player.  He then went to the NBA where he again struggled for a year before turning it around the last 1.5 seasons.  It's funny but at one point people actually thought he was a bust in the NBA because he was still a bad shooter and poor defensively.  To his credit he improved quite a bit in both departments and now is flourishing.  I'm really glad for him, but acting like Beilein left because of "kids these days" is trite.
