John U. Bacon on ESPN Sportscenter at 9:05pm EST

Submitted by Simps on

Bacon will be on Sportscenter at 9:05pm to discuss the Michigan situation. Thought some people here might be interested.

He posted this on Twitter. (Can't embed tweet on mobile)

Edit: here's the link he posted in the tweet http://espn.go.com/video/sportscenter

So I'm not sure if it's on the ESPN news live showing of Sportscenter at 9pm or if it'll just be a clip at the above link.

Edit 2 Summary: thinks Hoke may be fired tomorrow.

Asked about his legacy and he said Hoke is well liked but with a mediocre record.

Asked about who he wants as the next coach and he said Jim Harbaugh emphatically.

Smugly asked about chances Michigan lands Jim or Les and he responded that Jim was trickier but he quoted Les from one of his books saying "I'll never say no to Michigan"

Asked for percentages of next coach he said 51% Jim Harbaugh, 25% Les Miles and 24% for the rest of the world.

The reason you go for Harbaugh is he is younger and we've seen him be successful at multiple stops as a HC.  Miles is older and has so many connections/benefits being the biggest fish in a talent-rich state like Louisiana that it is hard to know how that would translate somewhere else.  Personally, I wouldn't got after either of them, but Harbaugh is a much better option for Michigan right now.

I honestly don't know what you want, dude. Harbaugh is almost certainly the best coach on the market, and either Harbaugh or Miles would be massive upgrades over the current staff. But if not then, who do you want? Keeping in mind that there's pretty much no way in hell Patterson is coming to Ann Arbor.

Miles might be an upgrade, but he's 61 and hasn't coached north of the Mason-Dixon line since 1994.  Who knows how he would do at Michigan given what I presume is a relatively few number of years left as a HC.  Plus, the SEC stench with him bugs me, and I'm not sure the stuff he does at LSU would be tolerated here.

Harbaugh is a fine option, but as I've said before I want Michigan to break with tradition a bit and try a younger guy who can grow with the program.  So I've said Scott Frost at Oregon (who is probably going to Nebraska if he does leave) or Herman from OSU.  Or someone else of that ilk.  Going after Harbaugh doesn't feel like a long-term solution at Michigan, and I'm not dying to watch every offseason turn into a "will he go to the pros or will he stay" story, because if you think Harbaugh is done with the NFL after going to three straight conference finals and a Super Bowl just because the SF brass don't like him, then we are on different wavelengths.

Harbaugh is objectively a good coach; I just don't think he'd be the best long-term solution at Michigan.  Love to be proven wrong, but nobody here has that information yet, so I'm just stating my opinion.

So Bacon thinks Hoke is gone tomorrow and that Michigan wants Jim Harbaugh or Les Miles.

*thump*

Sorry, I just passed out there for a second.  Way too much new information for me to process.

We should put all the candidates in a room together with that one monkey who picks games at a 90% rate. Let's have the monkey tell us who the coach will be.

about this slowly sinking ship that has been Michigan football for the last seven years all have the same plot. That the captain of this sinking vessel is Llyod Carr. From the Miles and Carr cheating rumors to the RR being undermind rumors. Oh wait, where there is smoke there is fire. I have herd to many of these stories to not think that this whole mess is because of Carr.

predict that Hoke will be fired!  I prefer JH but will settle for LM. I'm not sure about Mullen but he would be an improvement over Hoke. I would even settle for Stoops from UK. Please no Schiano or any other Hoke 1.0 or 2.0!

So, if the big house is filled to the brim every Saturday, Michigan is the hottest team on television and merchandise sails off the shelf, that additional 2 M dollar investment in a great coach would do wonders for the entire athletic department. If Schlissel goes cheap on the next coach and we end up with another Hoke like coach, the football program and all the other sport programs will be shambles, and I would blame Schlissel for being cheap and all the destruction he has caused!

longer an option I would take Mark Stoops in a heartbeat. Look at how he is recruiting. Everyone will laugh at this, but if he stays at UK a couple more years with the classes he has brought in UK will look like Ole Miss this year or better. He would be a good fit here if we can not get Harbaugh.
