Joe Milton vs. similar QB recruiting profiles

Submitted by Hail to the Vi… on October 17th, 2020 at 5:21 PM

Killing some time on a Saturday afternoon and was curious to see how QB's of a similar recruiting profile to Joe have stacked up over the course of their playing careers.

Looking through the results there were some notable names that got me to thinking who would Milton be most comparable to on this list. There's no good way to answer this question, obviously, because we haven't seen enough of Milton on the field to make any kind of reasonable comparison, and these are the guys that actually earned the starting job - there were plenty that didn't manage to do that as well.

Still, based on QB tangibles I would see him on a spectrum between Damion Terry (low) and Mitch Trubisky (high), leaning more towards Trubisky than Terry. Interesting collection of QB's that carried a similar recruiting profile, and thought I would post to the board

Joe Milton: #9 D-QB, #204 overall, .9202 rating, top offers: Georgia, Florida, Miami, Michigan, LSU

----------------------------------------------

Sam Darnold, # 5 D-QB, #148 overall, .9303 rating, top offers: USC, Oregon, Tenn., Duke, N'western

Malik Zaire: #3 D-QB, #165 overall, .9300 rating, top offers: Bama, ND, OSU, Wisc., Neb.

Jalen Hurts: #4 D-QB, #192 overall, .9231 rating, top offers: Bama, TAMU, TTU, WVU, Miss. St.

Damion Terry: #5 D-QB, #201 overall, .9190 rating, top offers: MSU, BC, Illini, Toledo

Mitch Trubisky: #6 D-QB, #206 overall, .9172 rating, top offers: Bama, OSU, MSU, Tenn., UNC

Joe Burrow: #8 D-QB, #280 overall, .9003 rating, top offers: OSU, Michigan, LSU, VT, WVU

Patrick Mahommes: #22 D-QB, #398 overall, .8807 rating, top offers: Ok State, TTU, Rice

I think we are going overboard on the Milton love / hype / analysis / over analysis.  I as much as anyone hopes he is a STUD - yeah, I said it - but let him actually play a game before we get ourselves all frothed up.  Considering how little he has played, all this analysis is meaningless.

Very true. This was not an attempt to anoint JM the next Joe Burrow or Sam Daronld. I simply wanted to see how guys that carried a similar recruiting profile fared in their college careers

There were plenty that never earned a starting job. Since Milton has now been named the starter, this was a list of other guys that were considered a similar calibur recruit that were also able to do that.

I am not going into the season assuming we have the next Joe Burrow or Patrick Mahommes. I am not really going into the season with any expectation at all, just hope he does well.

Just thought it was an interesting list of QB's and tried to estimate where I saw Milton fitting into this group based on on what (limited amount) we have seen.

Nailed it.

It's funny how everyone went from "but he's so unproven" a month ago, to "well actually, he's gonna be Cam Newton and Aaron Rodgers rolled into one."

He's gonna be what he's gonna be. Don't jump off a bridge because McCaffrey's gone, but also, don't hype yourself up to an impossible level that Joe Milton will likely not be able to meet.

We're a week away from seeing him in person. We don't need any more "analysis" before we get to see what he can do.

I actually think Devin Gardner comparison would be closer than all of those candidates.  But it looks like Milton might get more of a fair handshake as you would say than Devin did.  Devin came in with the skill set perfect for the spread under Rich Rod.  Denard and Devin are in special company because they beat OSU last over a 20 year span, but unfortunately I think they got robbed on a real shot at the NFL because of Hoke.  Milton might have the right OC in Gattis to maximize his very similar talents before the pros and hopefully he will get a better look than a cup of coffee in the NFL.

How about the many, many others with similar recruiting profiles who were very unaccomplished?

This feels like cherry-picking.

It will start rough.

There will be a loss or two.

A bad game here, a bad game there.

But then, there will be a glimmer of hope.

A spark that turns the team and season around.

A comeback from the dead you can't believe it kind of game.

And then there will be The Game itself.

He will wake that day with steel in his spine and resolve in his heart.

He will take the field.

And he will lead us to victory.

Joe Milton is coming, and Hell's coming with him.

Unfortunately, the success rate of blue chip QBs is not great.  The hit rate is like 25%.

(But, UM does fall within a blue chip ratio of about 16 teams with overall talent high enough to win a NC.  But, they'll have to beat one other team that is identical (PSU) and another that is much higher than them (OSU) and then two more in the playoffs that will be equal or higher than them.  In order to do that they need a string of good luck, not many injuries, and probably the best QB we've ever seen at UM.)

I bet that there will be a number of WTF moments in the first few games and we’ll all be wondering what the hell was McCaffrey thinking.

Yeah their QB is OK, but Bama still has a lot of good players on defense. Georgia has tons of weapons around him, but it's not good enough against a team like that. This is why we really need to finally get a great QB. Hopefully Milton can be that by the end of the year but who knows.

I’m just hoping he does not break into the leader board for Magnus’ most interceptions in a game list.  Hoping to see accuracy, good reads, and no forced passes Saturday.

I've been thinking about it the past few weeks and I think Felipe Franks is a pretty reasonable comparison. Big frame, huge arm, athletic enough, and some room for improvement when it comes to touch and decision making.

That's at least my baseline comparison of not trying to get my hopes up too much based on hype.

It will be interesting to see Joe play next Saturday night. He must of made quite a bit of improvements to win out over Dylan to the point where he forced Dylan to leave. If it was a close competition, Dylan would've stayed ready to step in when Joe made some big mistakes.
