Jim Harbaugh Illinois Post Game Press Conference

Overall he sounded pretty positive about the game. Here are a few excerpts:

I don't have the actual video, but here is a link to the entire transcript.

On Illinois' 3rd Quarter comeback:

"Third quarter, they made some plays, and we did turn it over. And our guys rose to the challenge. They were tested mightily, and they did a great job, didn’t flinch, kept playing, kept fighting."

"In the running game, they (Illinois) made a nice adjustment with their defensive end, and we made a counter adjustment in the ballgame that really paid off for us. They were spiking their end hard, and got us for a few. Then I thought Josh (Gattis) and Ed (Warinner) and the coaches did a nice job countering that, and they were able to get outside again with some big runs."

On Shea Patterson:

"Shea Patterson had a great game. Again, I don’t know all the statistics and the numbers are, but that was tough throwing the ball today (due to the wind), and he came up with some big throws. He’s got a very strong arm, throws a very tight spiral, and made some big plays when we needed it."

On the running backs:

"Zach and Tru and Hassan were slated to get the most carries. Christian got in there. And then Hassan was running the ball so well, we were really feeding him there at the end, and it paid off."

Offense overall:

"It was 42 points, hard-working 42 points. I think our team was tested extremely … was tested a lot. It was a heck of a challenge, especially going into the wind it was tough throwing the ball, and our running game really rose to the occasion."

"The offense was effective today. They played very well. Kind of almost gone through about every series of the game here, and the offense was picking up first downs, moving the ball, scoring in the red zone. The one we didn’t, we had the penalty. So pleased with the way the offense played. I thought they performed extremely well. I go back through it … our running backs stepped up. Both Zach Charbonnet and Hassan Haskins went for over 100 yards, our offensive line, thought they blocked, sustained, very little mental error."

"Jalen’s playing really well. I have a good feeling that our offensive line really played well and that it was assignment sound."

The fumbles:

"Yeah. It was a … I’ve got to look at them. I saw the one that was Zach as he was going down, just maybe put a foot off the ground, got hit from the side." "It happens, but we’ve got to keep making an emphasis on it. I know our backs are, it’s the biggest emphasis that they have." "Coaching ball security all the way to the ground, through the whistle, through the echo of the whistle and beyond."

The defense:

"Defensively we were in their backfield a lot. Lot of sacks, lot of tackles for loss, lot of PBUs. Uche five, three sacks and two TFLs. Cam McGrone, huge play of the game. Shed the block, get the quarterback and punch it out, all in the same down and create that turnover was huge for us. Mike Danna, I thought had a really good football game as well. A lot of guys. Then you look at the special teams, and Jordan Glasgow makes a big play for us, stretching out on the blocked punt, that was huge. And he was around the ball all day."

Injuries

Kwity and McKeon tried to give it a go but weren't able to. Nico and Lavert did not make the trip. Not sure if they will be ready for PSU.

This was the exact quote regarding Collins and Lavert:

"(Kwity Paye and Sean McKeon) gave it a go, and they weren’t able to play today. Kwity and Sean.

Nico (Collins) and Lavert (Hill) were unable to make the trip, weren’t ready to play. Held them out for this game. I don’t know (if it would have been different based on opponent). I don’t think so, but I don’t know for sure.

We’ll see how we came out of this game. We’ll find out when we find out."

I understand coach speak but everyone watches the same thing. Perhaps bias creeps in but I think some of this is bizarre, with the caveat I understand he is building him & team up publicly

I would agree that it is bizarre he is making note of Shea's throwing ability. It suggests Jim is aware of the criticism Shea has received from us fans. It is strange that he would feel the need to rebut that specific criticism. He could have just said that Shea made some good throws and led a few nice drives. Still, I like that he talks up his guys in public, even if he does so kind of strangely.

It seems that the message is "this is our guy." I think the ceiling of the team is really limited if that's the case, but maybe Jim thinks that the chemistry of the team is dependent on not disrupting the established depth chart. I have no idea, but I do enjoy the positive spin.

Shea's arm strength is in no way a strength. at all. Go back and watch every game and tell me what you think, his velocity on longer throws is on the slower side and I've seen more wobbly balls in games than I care to remember. The fact he singled those out is a tell and in fact IS an issue if he feels the need to reiterate them to the press. His timing/anticipation are a result of him questioning himself if he can make that throw. Pocket presence and reading defenses are just two things that Shea is not good at.

He really knows how to talk up his QBs (and his whole team for that matter). I respectfully prefer to see what another of our talented quarterbacks can do at the helm of this offense, but I do admire Jim's positivity about Shea. And for what it's worth, Shea did come up big on the clinching drive of the game, running and throwing.

If not for the context of the last few games (excluding Rutgers), I don't think people would be too upset. It's just that the bad parts played right into the same narrative of what's been wrong with this offense. Still, we looked like a decent offense that played sloppy, which I guess is a big improvement from some previous games.

Throwing the ball in gusty winds will do that, which is probably why JH made that comment.  He's trying to educate people who have never thrown a football into the wind.  It all looks easy from the Lazyboy.

Good thing Harbaugh didnt explain to their freshman QB the impossibility of throwing in that wind or he may have been too discouraged to complete 60% of his passes.

If the wind was such a factor on throwing why would we run so many comeback and out routes which require the most drive on the ball? But an offensive genius like Coach knows best, what with his track record of producing great offenses.

Oh wait, now I remember he usually has marginal offenses while he gravy trains off a great defense.

But again, almost no one (outside of the morons) are wanting him to be critical of any particular coach or player. I get him not wanting to throw any particular person under the bus but there's a way that you can nuance it. I'd much prefer something like 'Hey, we're always happy to get the win but with the stretch of games coming up, we need to play better on all sides of the ball". Something like that. All of this sunshine and rainbows from him just makes him appear delusional.

This team lacks confidence. Sometimes hearing your coach talk about the positives helps. He knows what he’s doing he’s been coaching football for a long time. Despite what everyone thinks. Remember how we all wanted JOK ? Or Brandon Peters the result wasn’t much better.

yes it’s Illinois and the world should end and the world will stop spinning tomorrow.

However the team showed it can turn the light back on battle some adversity and overcome it. Those are big leaps for a team.

Hear hear! The 4th quarter righting of the ship yesterday feels kind of important for this squad. At the very least it confirms a baseline of competence. This team might be only kind of decent, but they're not terrible, and they can play with poise and pride.

For what it's worth though, Brandon Peters is much better than John O'Korn (the injury history of the former notwithstanding).

That was a nice fourth quarter drive to seal the game and it's worthy of praise, especially for Patterson.  But the offense also dug its own hole with the fumbles and lack of sustained drives in the third and early fourth quarters.  The offense rose to a challenge that they themselves created.  A challenge that shouldn't have happened based on the flow of the game and how Michigan was physically wrecking Illinois.  They can't self-inflict their wounds at PSU and expect to win.  And it can't happen the following week either at home to ND.  Now begins the meat of the schedule and the run for a B1G championship.  We'll find out very soon if the offense is really hitting a stride or if it's just all coach speak.

True.  But to go from moving the ball at a 9.9 yard per play clip and essentially scoring at will to turning the ball over multiple times and trouble sustaining drives was the bigger story line, for me anyway.  The Jekyll and Hyde was weird considering the opponent.  If this happened at Iowa, PSU or OSU, I would totally get it.

I mean yeah, Illinois sucks. This Michigan team is somewhere between mediocre and good. But Illinois is a Division 1 team, and they gave us a good shot after a slow start. These are twenty year old kids, and football is an emotional game. We all know from experience that a team without a baseline of collective toughness can melt down when a game swings like it did yesterday, even against a bad opponent. We almost did that, but then did not. That was kind of cool to see.

On QB, I don't think we have a viable WIN NOW option that can replace Shea. He may likely lose the next two but Dylan doesn't look to have the passing game down and Joe is still learning defenses. I'm surprised Dylan didn't become a lot better passer during the offseason.

The changes to D like McGrone and may Dax give us a chance the next two weeks. Also think Hill and Collins were rested on purpose, even if they were a bit injured (who knows with Jimspeak how bad they are).

Watched the PSU-Iowa game last night. PSU made the critical conversions with the running game and just enough QB runs and short passes. I would like to think Shea could do the same but each game makes me wonder more so.

Shea had a nice game.

His game clinching TD to DPJ was a great toss in a pressure situation.  He threw it before the break to a spot low and away.  Only DPJ could get to that ball.  Great route.  Great pass.

Shea also manned up and stuck his head down on some key keepers including 4th down.

We still need a few more pulls by Shea on some easy reads.

I agree about that touchdown throw to DPJ. That was probably his best throw of the season (not to mention a great route and catch from DPJ -- give that guy the damn ball). And that play came after Shea was late on an out-route(?) to DPJ (that was still completed), and then over-threw him in the end-zone. Third time was the charm.

Some good points made in the responses here. The team - and Shea - did respond well to the adversity they faced, and they emphatically put the game away.

The 25 unanswered is concerning, and it speaks to more mental and motivational issues with the team, but they did put it behind them and stomped Illinois in crunch time.
