Jim Delany Earns $20MM Bonus

Submitted by doggdetroit on

This probably won't sit well with the anti-Delany crowd here at MGoBlog, but Commissioner Delany has just earned a $20MM bonus:

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/college/2017/05/12/jim-delany-big…

While he probably has earned it per the terms of his contract, and each B1G school is poised to receive at least $50MM a year per the new media rights deal, I think it's a TAD bit much considering the unwillingness to compensate student athletes.

So, I'm trying hard to give you the benefit of the doubt and wondering if you were being sarcastic and I just missed it. If not, here is the syllogistic logic you've proposed:

1. "That money has to go somewhere."

2. ?

3. Jim Delany gets $20 million dollar bonus.

I'm fine with him getting a bonus. How about the "cost of attendance" for each athlete annually. What's that - $100,000 to $200,000?  That's a pretty great bonus.  Say he did a super-duper-fantastic job then give him quadruple the "cost of attendance". That's a bit much, but I can see it justified.  But to give him half of what a University is getting? Seriously?

The argument that this is a "business" may be entirely true and valid. In that case, however, the athletes are employees and should be paid accordingly. The farcical notion and myth of the "student-athlete" rather than the "athlete-student" or "unpaid athlete" is what is demonstrated by giving such a sum to Delany.

What about them? You think that is equal?

People who continue to bring up scholarships should take a minimum wage job and refuse 95% of the $7.25/hr they earn.

The point, there's a line somewhere and it is LAUGHABLE that people bring up "scholarships" as that line.

What is a scholarship in comparison to $20m.

No matter what side of the argument you fall on there are a few things that need to be removed from the argument.

1. A scholarship is not compensation for revenue earned by the league. It's compensation for going to practice and being part of the team every day and being good enough to play on the team. That's it. You can get a scholarship for anything in college. A football scholarship is no different than any other scholarship...so take that out of ANY argument.

2. This has nothing to do with how replaceable you are...most people can't name 10 college football players in the country, yet somehow all of this money is made. People who act like just because you take a player away and the whole thing won't collapse is reason why they aren't valuable are stupid.

3. It's not about other sports...it's simply about revenue generating sports...and revenue generating SCHOOLS. It's not meant to be fair across the board.

If anyone doesn't want to pay college athletes, that's fine...but come up with better reasons than these listed above. It's a fact that a lot of money is being generated from them - people aren't tuning in to watch Jim Delany comedian/masterbater...so tell me why they shouldn't get paid and tell me what to do with all of the money they're generating. I haven't heard any good arguments....just everyone way off base on why they feel the way they feel.

Will someone please create a spreadsheet of everyone I'm supposed to hate/boycott? I can't really keep track anymore. I'll keep myself in a cat like state of readiness for outrage until this is completed.

No particular order:

1. Ohio State

2. Jim Delany

3. Big Ten Officials

4. Mark Dantonio  (okay, I put him fourth out of disrespekt)

5. Multiple night games in a season

6. Big Ten scheduling

7. Nick Saban

8. SEC

9. Bag men

10. NCAA

11. Notre Dame

12. Paul Finebaum

13. ESPN

14. Nginx error and "Welcome to your new Drupal website"

15. People who care about MGoPoints

16. People who don't care about MGoPoints

17. People who ask rhetorical or ironic questions

18. People who don't get sarcasm or a joke

19. People who make long lists

20. The internet, social media and comment sections

I'll stop there for now...  My suggestion for a better question is who you should like - it might turn out to be a shorter list...  /s

*change title to receives instead of earns. I understand corporate executives earn most of their pay in stock comp, making this even more ridiculous. I'd love to see a list of other executive pay at non-profits.
Pay the players!

paying players. It is not going to happen. Players are already paid in the form of a free education and other benefits.

Jim Delaney is a hero. Seriously guys, if he didn't take this money would save these poor students from fair wage and compensation?

Delaney is credited with the BTN, right? If so, I will give him credit for that and for negotiating the first TV deal that put the conference at the top in per member earnings and fo the recent one which was done in a tougher climate.

Beyond that, the Rutgers/Maryland thing, reaction to PSU, officiating, seeding and B1G perception, etc. are all divisive issues on their own and can't find him solely responsible.

Rutgers/Maryland stick out to me because there was an opportunity to make the conference truly great and put in one division all of the pre-1993 teams and in another move PSU and add any nine of Syracuse, Pittsburgh, UNC, Duke, UVA, Notre Dame, Texas, MIssouri, Kansas, Georgia Tech, Boston College, or even Rutgers and Maryland. The conference championships would be fantastic, basketball would be insane, rivalries would be preserved, football would have nine conference games plus a crossover game championship weekend (10th place East vs 10th place west, and so on), and the schools are a good fit for culturally and academically.

Maybe we see it spark up again. Where we sit now, it looks like Delaney played the numbers and geography. If he were a visionary, he could have both kept what people wanted about the conference and their teams while making the whole conference better.

Don't care about some silly payday he has "earned" - but wouldn't mind a change at the top. Few people hold positions for almost 30 years without need for a change. It's time.

more like his payoff for that officiating crew he arranged for Columbus last year. The Fuckeyes are behind that "bonus" paid to their tool Delany.

It all comes down to dollars and cents. Delany has created a cash cow for the B1G and that's all that matters. For all of his faults, the Universities have full confidence in him and that's why he's been in his position for so long. His bonus is well deserved in the eyes of those that keep him where he is. If you want to hurt him, don't subscribe to cable or satellite that carries the B1G channel or go to football games.

or does it seem like the B1G school presidents have been asleep at the switch for years? The league just seems to careen down the highway like a 70's caddy with bald tires and no shocks. That's where the blame belongs IMHO.
