Jason Whitlock and Jonathan Chait Discussion on Brady Hoke, Gardner, Program

Submitted by alum96 on

Here is a radio interview between the 2 men that I found interesting, specifically as Whitlock dominated the conversation and has ties to Hoke.   The interview re: Hoke starts around 30:45.

For TL;DTR - Chait is of the view this is a make or break year for Hoke. He believes Hoke runs an antiquated system and is stuck in the early 90s.  Big Gardner supporter, thought he was stuck on an island behind awful OL and no running game.

Whitlock has too many views to be concise but he has been confused by the lack of development of UM players that he saw from Hoke at Ball State and SDSU.  He also said last year's MSU game was a punch to the face to Brady Hoke, and that perhaps Hoke got comfortable once he got to UM and thought with the talent he got other things would be easier.  He disagrees with Chait on Hoke's viewpoints of stuck in old school football.  Raises questions of leadership re: Gardner.

Longer version:

  • Whitlock - Hoke's strength at Ball State/SDSU was player development - physically and mentally.   Would take 2 stars and make them 2.5-3s, would take 3s, make them 4s.  Lauds strength coach/program he had at those schools.
  • Whitlock - I have not seen any of that Brady Hoke at UM.
  • Whitlock - Fears Brady subconsciously lost focus on development due to talent he has been able to get to Michigan.
  • Whitlock - Not a big Devin Gardner fan - doesn't handle adversity well.  Small throw of Shane under the bus in throwaway comment.
  • Chait - Disagree on Gardner.
  • Whitlock - Due to QB situation / schedule not sure if work off the field this offseason will be reflected in increased wins but they are now doing the work necessary.
  • Whitlock - After ND game last year, I texted Wojo and said they'd be lucky to win 3-4 more games next year due to both the OL and DL being horrible.
  • Chait - Hoke has antiquated ideas i.e. spread vs non spread; spread makes you soft, etc.  Says OSU game proved otherwise.   Hoke wants to go back to early 90s.
  • Whitlock - Disagree on those points, but can understand the view.
  • Whitlock - Mentioned last year Lewan was not a leader.  Did not get that from inside information, just from watching the team.  I was proven right despite the hate at the time I received.
  • Whitlock - I've surrendered my relationship with Brady Hoke to give him distance so I can do my job.
  • Whitlock - Green came in very soft last year.  Someone should have seen that and rectified it.  I saw this kid dive at a LBs feet rather than block.
  • Chait - makes negative comment on Fred Jackson as RB coach in terms of development of RBs.
  • Whitlock - doesn't disagree on Jackson without explicitly saying it.
  • Chait - defends Gardner more due to summer camps where gurus say he would be a star.
  • Whitlock - some truth in that but cites a play vs MSU where Gardner fell 1 yard short vs MSU as a signal of things you can't do.  Leaders don't do that.
  • Chait - disagrees, and cites Gardner sacrificing body all year.
  • Whitlock - agrees to a degree but still thinks Gardner is lacking in key areas.  Whitlock compares Devin to Denard, and says he loved Denard's heart ... but had decision making issues.
  • Rest of call is fluff and worshiping Beilein.

I have no problem with a 90's mentality as long as the outcome is what MSU had.  Not just in Win's, but performance.  I can handle a loss to a good team if the team is disciplined and coached well.  My concern with Hoke is he seems to carry Carr's conservativeness.  Teams who play not to lose, tend to lose some games they shouldn't.  I realize 13-0 isn't attainable every season, but I shouldn't have to have my exectations be an 8 win season and hope it's better.  Hoke bought another year of 'eligibility' from me (for what that's worth) by getting rid of the borg, but I need to see serious strides this next season or my tweets to Dave Brandon will be in full swing again (Not that that's going to do anything anyway)

Eight-win seasons are nothing to poo-poo. Mark Dantonio has only had four seasons of 8 wins or better in his 7 years. We all agree that he's a good coach. There will come a time that we will be able to expect to win more than 8 games in a season, just like State fans do now. But that time isn't now. Were only 3 years out from the disastrous Coach Rod tenure, when mist of us expected about 6 wins a season and the really zealous of us thought we might win 8 and considered that a good thing. Soon. Just not yet. Let's be happy our expectation is 8. That means we've got a stable program.

This wasn't meant as a defense of Hoke, but as a sort of reality check. I know its not a popular thing to say, but Michigan just was not an attractive spot for coaches or recruits in 2011. We were coming off of three awful seasons. If its a defense of Hoke at all, its that he was able to right that wrong; he's recruited well and he hired an OC from Alabama. But that's not really what my comment was about. The notion that Michigan had any inherent advantage was shattered in 2008. I do not understand the people who still cling to the idea that Michigan "should" win 9+ games despite being just 3 years removed from that era (and still having empty classes at OL and NT). I'm as optimistic as they come, and I do believe that Michigan should be a program that averages 9 wins or better. All I've said is that were not ready yet, and that this should not be a surprise because of where the program is coming from.

I agree wholeheartedly. I just think we're not there yet. But I do think the program is in good shape right now, in that we've got some footing and will soon be at that 9 win level. This might happen with Hoke as coach, or it might not. But Hoke has achieved his primary goal: we are no longer a shit program. We're just a middling one, on the way back up. I'm not saying 8-5 in perpetuity would make me happy, I'm just saying that -- considering where we were from 2008-2010 -- we are not in position to poo-poo 8 win seasons. FWIW, I used to believe that Michigan should win at least 9 games every year and the B1G should always be decided during The Game, but 2008 broke me. I refuse to fall into that trap again, especially when the memory of us being shit is so fresh. Also, I've played on Michigan teams that went 8-4. Trust me, it made us feel like we were letting the ghosts of Harmon and Yost down. It was hard to walk with your head up on State Street. I hate 8 win seasons. But as a fan, we have to look at it differently. Or at least that's my take.

There is some truth to what is said, but I long ago stopped taking Whitlock seriously as a person who has objective and supported views on football.  He seems like a muckracker.

Beyond that, I have always hated the "leadership" issues people bring up.  Look above and you'll see a story about a kid who "led" his team to a MNC and, oh by the way, may have sexually assaulted a fellow student but was protected by the university and his team.  So maybe it's just me, but "leadership" is more analogous to wins in sports, and so doesn't really mean much.

I do think Gardner is going to have a nice last season but this line is going to be rough to watch.

Complaints about Hoke living in the 90's feels pretty hollow considering he hired an accomplished DC, went after a pretty high-profile OC, and took so many risks on 4th down and late in games.  Hell, he went for the win against OSU.  Moeller and Carr would have kicked the ball 99 times out of 100, and the 100th only because the snapper flubbed the kick.  So to say Hoke is living in the past, especially for a guy who still thinks Jeff George wasn't given a fair shake in the NFL, is the height of hypocrisy.

If Hoke can win 9 or more games, the program is back, momentum will increase and a lot of 4* and 5* players will want to play here. Rumors of Hoke being on the hot seat will end.  (30 percent chance of this scenario occurring).

6 to 8 wins: Hoke will be on the hot seat in 2015. Many 4* and 5* recruits will pass on playing at Michigan. Rumors will be flying that 2015 will be Hoke's last season. However, 2015 will probably be a good season for Hoke and the program will be placed back on the track to be competitive with OSU and MSU in the B1G east. (60 percent chance of this scenario occurring).

Less than 6 wins: Hoke will not be coming back in 2015. I would not be surprised if Nuss may be named HC if DB cannot find a quality coach! (10 percent of this scenario occurring).

Hidden variable. If we suck and Hoke is fired, Nuss's offense will have been bad. The defense has been anywhere from really good to OK in Hoke's three years, Hoke is a defensive coach, and Mattison is a great coordinator. We have quite a bit of experience and talent on defense. If we suck, it probably won't be because of the defense. So, I don't see Nuss coaching this team an time soon.
