It's Official: Kellen Jones Gone

Submitted by mackbru on

The school confirmed it to The News, saying Jones "is no longer enrolled" at the university.  So the rumors in general were correct. But the specifics remain mysterious -- the school wouldn't comment about the reason for the young man's exit.

Another RR recruiting casualty strikes again. If we didn't have so many good LB's coming in, I would be a lot more pissed off. At this point I just hope the rumors weren't true and Kellen gets things straightened out for himself.

he is just citing the snakebit nature of some of RR's recruits, which is perhaps the kharmic remedy for snake oil.

also, if i understand correctly, kellen and his dad actually recruited michigan more than vice versa.

its a sad situation for ALL parties involved, beyond football

Because blaming RR here is like Obama camp blaming everything on Bush.  And Bush people then blaming everything on Clinton.

Recruiting is incredibly difficult, its easy to look  at pictures of these kids who look like 30 year olds and forget they are actually 18.  Lots of things could cause this, the least of which was RR

2009 had only 2 OL recruits.  2010 had 1 (Pace).  2011 has 3.  5 OL across 3 recruiting classes is going to cause problems.

Hopefully the 2012 OL class can be as productive as the 2008 class, because they're going to be called upon early.

Hoke signed on and focused on Defense in the '11 class even though the need was already evident.  Fisher was an elite spread-offense OT who de-committed when Rodriguez left and Hoke failed to retain.

Also, when Carr left Rodriguez inhereted an even worse situation, necessitating the 6 person class in '08, which is part of why RR did what he did... At least Hoke has a strong group through 2011 and 2012 with Omameh, Banum, Khoury, Schofield, Lewan, and maybe Mealer.

I think you can spread the OL blame around between three coaching staffs.

I think if timing had worked out a little better, both he and Zettel would have been blue. Tough to blame either, none of the Hoke awesomeness had really been flushed out by signing day. Zettel really didn't want to play in a 3-3-5, and though he inquired around (supposedly) after GMAT was brought on, by that point his mind had probably settled on PSU.

Hoke visited Fisher's home I think as often as he was allowed. He was certainly a priority, probably THE priority of the staff. But who the hell knew Hoke at that time? Tough to compete with a stable coach (at least at that time) who's just appeared in the NC game, running the offense RR's been selling to Fisher for a year.

Just didn't work out, but "failed to retain" is a little harsh given the circumstances. There was the Flavin kid we contacted but never offered - maybe we should have been hard after him from Day 1 given the lack of depth (he seemed like a fallback plan for Fisher and probably knew it, staying committed to Illinois). But Fisher moving on is a casualty of the CC, not something to put on Hoke.

Which is about all you can get unless you're throwing scholarships at projects. A lot of that 2008 class were Carr recruits who stayed. And Rich lost two linemen in 2008 that he inherited before spring. And it's not offset by landing more players along the way there. But we have a huge collection of so-so slot receivers.

Not that Pace would be a contributor this year but that hurts depth at the present. Current Schollie linemen=11, 3 of them true frosh. For the future, my guess is Khoury/Mealer/Barnum will be the centre next season and Jack Miller better be a quick learner because he'd probably be #1 by default come 2013.

Because it's still only a rumor. Whether it's true or false has yet to be confirmed, and we don't have any of the facts. Given the nature of the allegation, it's best IMO that we just leave it at Kellen messed up and let's see what happens.

Hey, if people want to discuss it, then they will and that's their prerogative. I just hope they remember that the Jones' family reads the blog and might very well read this thread. Can't speak for anyone else but if my son/daughter was in that situation, I probably wouldn't want to read what a bunch of message board posters not involved in the situation thought. At least until you know, details are actually confirmed...

If people don't want to read about themselves, they shouldn't click where they see their name on the Internet. Pretty simple, right?

I hope you know you aren't protecting anyone from the new realities of the world with this uppity stance you are taking.

I see what you are saying, but I have not seen one instance where people have derogated or passed judgment on Kellen here. They have just stated what the rumors were. Maturity rather than censorship has ruled here. And that says a great deal about the folks here - if we can state rumors like that, and THEN withhold judgement and not condemn him, then to me that says more about the folks here than demanding censorhsip does. Its a much more mature approach.

I'm trying to show some consideration for an 18 year old kid who may or may not but probably did make a mistake
Out of curiosity, do you feel sympathy for everyone who is booted out of school, or just the ones that happen to play football?

Didn't say I was sympathetic, just that I didn't feel it was worth talking about under the circumstances. I have no respect for individuals who are accused of what Kellen is in this rumor, there's just little to be gained in this case until we know more.

This is true and there is something to that. He'd know the situation better then all of us and nothing he's done so far makes me question his judgment.

I just think that given the allegation and any form of connection between the blog and his family, it's prudent that we not try and go into details when we don't know the facts is all. Too delicate a situation.
