Informative Coach/Media Tidbits from Today
I just thought these were interesting little tidbits/confirmations:
Per Mark Snyder, Coach Mallory says that Dymonte Thomas will be strictly a safety this spring. I love this, clearly.
Per Nick Baumgardner, Coach Hoke says that Freddy Canteen is "truly a slot guy", which leads me to believe that he'll play pretty early, considering the only other true slot guy is Norfleet (and maybe Hayes?)
And per Zach Helfand, Hoke said that Noah Furbush cut his own cast off using a hedge trimmer because he wanted to play so badly. Early nominee for #want of the year.

I missed the part where NSD stood for "ask questions about a kid no longer at UM and about whom I've given statements in the past."
February 5th, 2014 at 3:14 PM ^
It's the first access since a fairly large thing happened and people are curious as to what Hoke knew or did not know. It's pretty standard for the media to ask people about things of all sorts when they have the access.
February 5th, 2014 at 3:20 PM ^
That's on the AD and Hoke for not providing another opportunity. On the other hand, NSD is the culmination of a long, sometimes grueling recruiting process for both the players and coaches. I can completely understand not wanting to detract from what they were there to talk about, which is the new class.

a day or two before. See [hear] Sam Webb's reports from yesterday's WTKA podcasts. Link to first segment.
EDIT: Link may take you only to podcast menu page. He talks about it in segments 2 (2.31 in), 3 and 5 of yesterday's broadcast.

But after Hoke has stated once that he's made his statement and that's it, they should just let it go. UM will hold a press conference to talk about it; NSD isn't the time for it. And yes, I get the media's "need" to discuss this issue, but it's not like the media has done a particularly good job in recent years being truly objective and unbiased in their coverage about UM. I know there is this myth that everyone in the news industry is Robert Redford in All the President's Men, but many of them are hacks who care as much about the byline as what's underneath it. I don't see why everyone needs to give them the podium at all times just because they are screaming loudly.
February 5th, 2014 at 4:56 PM ^
I believe your repetitive non-information littered throughout any discussion of this topic would certainly qualify as "screaming loudly". You are a blog commenter and you do what you do. They are reporters and do what they do.
I do not believe that Hoke is being evasive, he is just not very bright.

here's the actual statement that he issued on Monday, which i don't think has been posted here before:

really? jay carney, and most press secs for that matter, tries to do just that every time open their mouths

The statements he has given in the past are the reason the questions persist.
He voluntarily offered statements regarding Gibbons absence. He now wants to say he can't talk about it. These types of contradiction lead to questions.
What part of this are you "missing"?

I referenced the original statement at the heart of this matter. He may have given a "statement" but he did not answer the question. Until he does it will continue to be asked. The solution is simple, unfortunately, so is Hoke.
If he can't comment now why did he then? Why did he refer to it in the manner he did?
He can and should answer those questions.

Are you arguing with yourself?
February 5th, 2014 at 3:28 PM ^
I thought he could only talk about what is allowed by the federal privacy laws.
February 5th, 2014 at 4:42 PM ^
Glad to see that anything Hoke says from now on that isn't a direct statement on Brendan Gibbons will be met with much consternation from the MGoBoard
February 5th, 2014 at 8:34 PM ^
How do you filter out the comments with a negative score. MGOBLOG is so much better when the community moderation prevents me from seeing "negative" comments. I realized I should be able to look at the score, but when it is there I have to read it. tap tap tap bang bang bang one two three one two three OCD.

Hoke, on Peppers: Let's get him here & let him be a corner for awhile. Can he return kicks? Yea. Could there be an offensive plan? Possibly.
February 5th, 2014 at 3:00 PM ^
I'm glad they won't be messing around with Dymonte Thomas at slot corner anymore.
Also, Hoke said that Wangler is a WILL, Ferns is a MIKE, and Furbush is a SAM or a MIKE. Those are the positions I think most expected, but that answers any questions people might have.
February 5th, 2014 at 3:04 PM ^
I've been meaning to ask you this, Magnus, but I kept forgetting. If reports are true that Furbush is already 240+ pounds and still growing, do you think he could end up playing defensive end?
February 5th, 2014 at 3:11 PM ^
I think so, yes. That's what I said in my commitment post on Furbush, too. He could be a Brennen Beyer type who bounces back and forth between SAM and WDE. I don't see him playing MIKE at all.

What about Winovich? Another SAM?
February 5th, 2014 at 8:59 PM ^
Yep, he's a SAM, too.
February 5th, 2014 at 3:15 PM ^
I almost hate to admit that I laughed a little when the story about Furbush's cast came up because obviously there is the potential for such a procedure to not end well at all, but at the same time, I rather admired the dedication to the sport that such an act takes. Yet another player to be excited about here at Michigan.
February 5th, 2014 at 3:26 PM ^
Glad he had an opportunity to show the little twinkle in his eye we've been missing lately.

Cast removers stop themselves if they get close to the skin. Hedge trimmers? NOT SO MUCH.
February 5th, 2014 at 4:11 PM ^
Hedge Trimmers are cool. I took mine off with a razor blade. It took about 3 hours and I would have quit 30 minutes in after I realized how bad of an idea it was. What really sucked is 10 minutes after I got it off, it hurt so bad I had to go explain to my Doctor, and spend another 3 hours trying to explain that I truly was not suicidal.
February 5th, 2014 at 5:53 PM ^
worked on mine. I had it for a day, but couldn't handle going in to a new job with it on so off it went. sweated bullets for a while till the ankle healed, but it all worked out.

I won't deny that some people deserve a virtual smack every now and then, but it seems like a few are having a tough time reading between the lines and overreact to some things. I didn't say we need to like each other all the time, but again...realize that we all support the same team.

Coach Hoke's DEATH STARE towards that one guy who writes for FREEP. Pretty good stare down.
February 6th, 2014 at 11:45 AM ^
(Hoke) "may simply be following orders and legal paths, and there might not even be anything more to divulge… I don’t see some grand conspiracy."
