This is the thread for hot takes about the defense and the defensive playcalling.

Some don't seem to understand that the soft coverage is completely competition-based.  Against a competent offense, my guess is the defensive plan changes.

It was...good?

I was watching the backups on that last drive and it was nice to see them RISE UP. Literally in Keon Sabb's case when he volleyball spiked that throw into the endzone, and the ball doinked off the goal post. With INT's in consecutive games, Sabb looks like he's coming into his own.

It was nice to see former OL Reece Atterbury get some action there to kill Indiana's final drive.

Mason Graham smoothly scooping a bouncing football up in the rain with a club on one hand...are you serious? The guy is such a Dude. Kenneth Grant almost snagging another pick? Also a Dude.

The Wolverines forced 4 turnovers and you love to see it. 232 offensive yards ceded despite the starters playing the usual ~3 quarters. Every game seems to be the same. The consistency is off the charts right now.

They are exceptional athletes

They play exceptionally physical

They are exceptionally well coached

This defense is a joy to watch.  It felt like they developed their game plan for Indiana during the first quarter of the game, and that worked.

I wasn’t sure which thread to post this comment.

Regarding the Indiana double pass, I am pretty annoyed that IU did this play. It was a good play, but why put it on tape in a game you are just not going to win?

Is my annoyance justified, or am I just being a crybaby?

The whole concept of "putting things on tape" is often overrated by fans.

This wasn't some creative play design that nobody's ever seen before -- it was the same double pass that Michigan ran in the Big Ten Championship game against Iowa, and it's been run by dozens of other teams in dozens of other circumstances too.

No, your annoyance is not justified.  Indiana got a play -- you tip your cap and move on.  In fact, if anything you should be grateful to IU -- as clearly Michigan could use some remedial training in assignment football and double pass recognition.  This may prevent PSU or OSU from trying a similar play -- or it may allow Michigan to stop it if they do.

Why not put 20 wildly variating plays on tape? Make that defense scheme for a million things. Meanwhile your offense is only practicing your specific plays that week leaving the rest on the shelf. You get a huge advantage at practice time while the defense is trying to be jack of all trades.

It was upsetting we couldn't set the line of scrimmage in the first quarter.  Having the tackles so far apart seems like an issue, but idk if this was Moore experimenting min/maxing what his tackles can do?
