Illinois names Bill Cubit permanent head coach

And their rationale behind this decision was....

#illini AD Paul Kowalczyk on 2-year deal: "It's not ideal but for now, I don't think it'll put a dagger in the heart of the program."

Wow, no kidding. But sadly, this does sound like what a lot of poor managers/executives say to their employees: "Hey, you really aren't right for this task, but there is no one else here better suited, so we're giving it to you. Just try not to fuck it up too bad, OK?"

According to the Bowling Green message board, head coach Dino Babers was offered the Illinois job and he turned it down. The MAC's hottest coach wants nothing to do with that mess. If true, the rejection was probably what convinced the AD to stick with who he has. And I think Cubit is an improvement over the fired Beckman.

But it's completely insane. Illinois should have tons of money from the Big 10 network + TV deal to hire a coach and give him and Alabama-like support staff. It's in the Big 10 west, where IOWA is currently undefeated. You should be able to recruit St. Louis and Chicago.

Pac 12 schools with far less have gotten great results by opening up the checkbook and spending that TV money. What's the point of having more money for the conference, adding shite like Rutgers and Maryland, if all the other schools in conference are just going to pocket the money, shrug their shoulders and  hire  a coach that makes them go, "We'll he won't end our program"?

The kids seemed to respond to him pretty well and played their asses off when they could have said screw it. It's Illinois guys, Bill Cubit is a legit coach and I think the Illini did well here given their situation.

Seems reasonable. Seriously. Go get a crappy dice roll in this off-season, realize you may have made a mistake but can't just let the new guy go right away. Basically take a year off and you'll have better pickins

Overall, the hire isn't bad. The reasoning doesn't help him at all in recruiting though and practically guarantees the program will do nothing for a decade.

Wow. I often walk out of offices smiling when they tell me, "Well, you're not exactly who we wanted on this project, but at the same time we're pretty sure that you can't fuck it up too badly."

I am shocked he didn't add, "Don't worry, Bill. Illinois football practically runs itself, something your predecessor just didn't appreciate."

Wasn't running Great Britain in 1940. The famous Churchill speeches would have taken a slightly different tenor. Even Chamberlain would have said, "What the f-uck?"
