.....what would you do with the site?
this may be of some local interest
Ban anyone who posts a topic about what you would do if you ran MGoBlog for a day.
Well played, sir.
That mean something.
You got me for a second there. I mean, for like literally one second. But you got me.
One word (rubs hands devilishly)
So much Kate Upton
Agreed, it's getting creepy and (dare I say it) RCBM-esque
There was a current events blog I used to visit that I quit because it became a gruesome cult of personality for the blogmaster (hint: Lizards, that's all I'll say).
But the guy was a tech genius and his site was amazing. The best thing was that thread comments loaded in real-time from the latest post, so you could literally watch the thread refresh. Cool story and all, yes, but that was an impressive blog technically.
That's actually not that techmaster-hard. It's just an ajax function.
I'm a /nerd
Bring back the old voting system so any posters who joined the site in the past two years could see what they are missing.
I do miss the neg to Bolivian.
Without the stick what good is the carrot?
I know nothing about the programing requirements or how it works... The old scoring system where pos bangs (and usually more entertaining) neg bangs were really something.
Edit: beaten to the punch!
The forum "next page" bug
The posbang and negbang thing
Reach out to former players and ask them to do some live blogs.
Is the food in SQuad private cafeteria really that much better than the normal stuff?
I'd limit ellipses to three dots...period.
I laughed my ass off when I read this. The wife wanted to know why I was laughing so hard in bed. Once I explained it to her, she rolled over to the other side and farted. She just doesn't get our humor.
I'd shut it down just so everyone would freak out and think that Hand committed.
Oy, I've been reading A Song of Ice and Fire too much: I read that as "the Hand" and wondered which plot-line you were referring to.
Create a specific board for Off Topic discussion.
That would be interesting. Perhaps it could cut down on the "why did you bother posting this" replies.
I'm one of those guys who asks why. But, when the topic is about soccer and not football, I feel I have the right to ask.
I feel you vastly underestimate the number of soccer fans here, including Brian Cook.
even with an OT forum people would still bitch. maybe more...
If you ever visit RCMB you would know what the potential of an OT board would look like.
Which is kind of curious, since they have other boards for their OT shit, but their main board is still all crapped up.
If you get the posbang/negbang back, it works better than having an OT board. The crap OT is punished with a negbombing and then removed by a mod once the tribe has spoken.
Having a dedicated OT board is like creating a space for mediocrity to flourish.
Return the neg Brian.
I actually like some of their OT stuff. The comments, well, yeah, but I sometimes scan RCMB simply because there are some interesting OT stuff. Rather than clutter our main board here, I think you could get a nice OT thread, and then like others said, have a true pos/neg system again and if it's unwarrented OT it gets bombed. If that's the biggest downside, and you can get some cool OT links, because lots of us at least have similar interest (I like the Space OT links, for instance, but not everyone does; others are the drinking threads, the pro-sports teams, etc that a lot people like to reasonably justify a thread, but not everyone does like it). I've long thought a OT thread would be nice.
Also, FWIW, I do like the set-up that the MSU 247 has with the Duff. A general recruiting thread, then a thread for individual recruits. When someone has an update or whatever, that person gets pushed to the top and people can discuss that recruit. Maybe it becomes more difficult to moderate if people don't follow the rules, but I think it's a pretty nice way to get the people interested in recruiting to sort the info and give a place for people to discuss those recruits.
Of course they would. But at least it would be on the topic of Michigan related sports/academics.
I visit other message boards and they have "General Talk" boards. Yes, they allow people to start topics that I wouldn't discuss but the beauty is all that trash is filed away in a completely different forum.
Either way, no big deal. I will continue to wade through the garbage posts to find the gems I find and enjoy here. I was just suggesting a way to make it better.
I've suggested this before and was told moderation would make it too difficult. I like OT stuff but I like reading the actual OT stuff, not people bitching about it being OT
Just make the board and don't moderate it. I bitch about ot threads because I come here to read about Michigan sports.
Michigan sports are not linked with any other pro sports unless there is a player that played at Michigan on the current team. I have a feeling if I posted a topic every day with my favorite pro teams more would complain since my team is not from the state of Michigan.
Just my opinion.
I'd be into that, but maintain some kind of points total before you can post there.
Basically it's a "shoot the sh*t " room for regulars. I'd love to get to know some of you people better and you seem like folk who could converse on other topics.
When you say "get rid of" do you mean... Permanently???
Put up a Devin Gardner banner EDIT (Make that a Taylor Lewan..maybe a new thing should be Thos Who Stay Get The MGoBlog Banner)
Send one lucky regular straight to Bolivia
Run a scam that would steal all members bank account #s...drain their accounts and give all that money to Tom VH to get him back from ESPN
1. Being back Herm.
2. Old voting system.
3. Give out free memorabilia for most frequent visitors or epic posts.
Old points system.
+2 for a posbang, -1 for a negbang, -1 to neg someone.
Easiest way to police the forum IMO.
Where I believe it was simply +/- and you didn't lose a point for negging someone. I know there was some benefit so people would drive-by neg, and people wouldn't neg unnecessarily, but some people also deserved to be negged.
One thing that would be interesting to implement, but way too difficult, would be that the first person that negs a comment would be forced to reply. This way, you wouldn't get the people that simply say "I disagree with your opinion, I'll neg you", at least they would have to reply and discuss it. It would stop trolls from just negging everyone. But then you might also get people that reply "I disagree" and that's it. Like I said, this is way too complicated too and not realistic.
Pretty sure if I ran it for a day, the number of users would dwindle. I can't even pretend to do half the job Brian and staff do. Also, I would pay myself a great deal of money that day just because I could. And I would make sure I got to keep that press pass the rest of my life.
I would insist on an MGoProfile with RDT.
Talk to WolverineInABag/MGoCooper. Apparently he's friends with RDT or something.
No they aren't friends. They just use each other's accounts every now and then.
Totally makes sense. I share my passwords with anyone who asks. Except PasswordIsTaco. His password isn't actually Taco.
Could you imagine everyone posting their passwords in celebration after a big win? It'd be like an MGoSwingerParty.
"OMG check it out; PurpleStuff is totally nailing LSAClassof2000's account."
and have him hold me
The thought of Billy Ocean wanting to hold Tom VH is absolutely hilarious to me. Cheers.
It was so funny I had to post twice apparently!
THE_IGNORANCE doesn't come around often, but whenever he does, it's almost as good as "don't click here" on mgo.licio.us
If we can have a hassle free football season (with LSA's agreement), we'll bring it back on 12/1.
So no epic meltdowns? I assume open threads are still (mostly) free zones.
you don't want to find yourself in, I'll leave it at that.
Know what I mean? Nudge Nudge Wink Wink
that devolved into one poster posting a picture of themselves with their degree, nothing that rises to that level. If one of us feels the need to actively step in on account of something you get/share blame for, it's off. Stay reasonable within the context of the thread or walk away and you'll have GhostOfYost back for the bowl game and most of hockey/basketball season.
Make sure you're not involved in a bad situation on the board from now until the aftermath of The Game and I'll make sure you're posting with GhostOfYost by the next day.
...and wanted to fire Hoke or Beilein everytime something bad happened? Would that suffice?
Bring back McFarlin.
And I'd keep the voting system. This is definitely the better than the old one.
Liquidate all assets.
Sell all rights to ESPN.
Note to self: Don't let FreddieMercuryHayes around my shit.
But not a real green dress that's cruel...
What about a monkey?
Raises for all the writers.
And by spread wealth, I mean give me wealth.
\ Aaaand this post went way to the realistic communist political model territory.
Is that actually a good idea?
Lets ask Jerry:
Good enough for me.
Old voting. Half of the stupid posts would disappear. It's odd that something that is requested so often hasn't happened as of yet.
snag a Borges- like interview with DB
Set up a 15 recruiting board and finish the 14 board.
maybe set up a depth chart by class that incorporates the future class with links to the recuiting board
bring back SpartanNation
oh and porn, way way more porn
I would transfer all of the ad revenue that I have generated for this site into my bank account and then retire.
I'd also offer Magnus a guest post to talk about Mike Cox.
If that happened, I could die a happy man.
were Mgovideo and Wolverine Historian can post videos without being hasseled so we can enjoy old games, interviews, and so on. And start throwback thursday game where we will be able to watch Michigan games from the past in which everyone could vote for and watch when their are slow days on the page.
This is a cool idea. (Mental pos bang)
Why hasn't this been thought of/done before?!?! I think we could easily donate enough money to purchase the necessary server space and restrict access to MGoMembers.
...and position breakdowns. Then throw a huge party (on Brian's dime) to celebrate the greatest assembly of football talent to ever be assembled.
I'm sure Brian and co. have heard many of these before, but here are some things I'd be in favor of:
- Ability to direct message other users.
- Separate channels for different types of discussions. Limit to reasonable number (7 or fewer) and select carefully so they are as mutually exclusive as possible. Otherwise people will have to hunt around to much to find info.
- Ability to create a customized message feed based on user preferences (by channel, key word(s) and/or tags).
- Notification system: e.g., notify when Hello posts, main board posts, new posts to a thread you have selected to Track.
- Voting of yesteryear (as mentioned already by several)
- Improved page layouts. Current layout is cluttered by persistent links to non MGoBlog content. Wouldn't say eliminate them, but if that content were layered, accesible on separate page(s) via one or more links, you could open up the page, allowing the feature content more room to breathe.
- Mobile first responsive design. Would eliminate need for the app. (Sorry Elaydin)
- Reconsider separation of Diaries vs. Messages. Quite frankly, I'm not sure the difference is all that clear cut. I find the Diary content pretty hit or miss. Anything extremely worthwhile tends to get promoted to Main Board anyway.
- Reconsider New vs Recent vs Hot. Maybe it's the nomenclature, but not really sure how those work. Pretty much stick with new.
- Automatically surface trending / popular content.
- Easier integration of multimedia content.
- Ability for users to create polls, voting.
(and no, this is not the wrong thread!)
I would tell a bunch of superstar recruits to commit so I can write about it and make everyone happy.
forums and get rid of the terrible layout for the forums. Maybe an OT subforum. Basically, just hate the layout on here and that's why I rarely post.
Dude, slow down. The top of your head's on fire.
Edit: Crap. Meant as a response to Eth2's post.
Make sure I got my HTTV copy.........................
Bring the forums into the 21st century.
I rather enjoyed the 2nd half of the 20th century--spent 75% of my life there, you know!
I'm about the same age you are.
But there's no excuse except laziness for the "forum" being in the state it's in. It's really ridiculous. I guess people here don't go to other places so they don't know any better - or for some reason they have different tastes than the majority of the internet's population - but really, if you look around, it's not difficult to implement boards better than this. Sub forums, OT, private messaging, thread tracking - you can find all these features and more for free.
Create another MGoBoard Sticky for technical issues with the site and pointing out broken links, or links that go to sites that update less often than Sparties light couches on fire.
I was thinking perhaps about a 401(k) and pension scheme for mods and regular contributors, as well as free access to the MGoBlog gym as well as the back room at the MGoBlog club.
The ability to conduct online seminars for wayward bloggers and give presentations on what they might be able to do to become a more amiable MGoBlogger could be interesting as well.
Someone else mentioned it, but it would be helpful from a mod standpoint if there were some sort of push notification for new threads or posts, basically a screen which mirrors the "Track" screen here but could be accessed in one click and from mobile devices.
Perhaps as an alternative to an "OT" forum, I would like to see a "Community" section for meetups and tailgates for which MGoBloggers are the focus. This is a mature enough community now that I think these would get decent turnouts regardless.
How about access to the exclusive MGoBlog Executive Bathroom?
Straight cash homie...
Question: if you as an MGoUser get the SMU-style NCAA death penalty, do you die in real life too?
Answer is yes; pretending I'm Mao on the internet is the only reason I have for living, and I'm pretty confident the Stalin impersonation is vital for LSA's well-being also.
Generic you? Most of me hopes not, but also strangely hopes so.
Get push notifications for the hello posts.
Then I would get laid all day long.
I would write my anti-rich rod manifesto and enjoy one day of sanity on this site.
I would get drunk and troll everyone. Kate upton would be the new banner. I would also post spoilers to the game of thrones on the front page. You better pray this day never comes.
with rooms by the dozen,
Right in the middle of the town.
one used to be able to see if other users were online. It was nice not to sit there and wait for a reply to a post that might not come for awhile.
I'd increase the percentage of front page writing done by Brian, working him until the distance between his fingerprints and underlying bone was thin as tissue. Even if only for that day, it'd be worth it.
I respect everyone else's time, thought, and commitment, but the content quality isn't the same. It's the difference between A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again and a mishmash of undergrad honors theses and creative writing assignments. Hard work well done, but done by non-savants. Not the same.
EDIT: You know what? Challenge accepted.
WiSB, PUT ON THE COFFEE. The savant-writing shall begin.
After this nap.
And change it so he's one of the guys who can post, but no one else can see his comments...except you obviously. Then spend the rest of the day giggling to yourself as he loses his mind
2. Our dear departed recruiting insiders
3. Swag Mattison banner across the top
4. every snap video library
Would people be interested in a closing-the-chapter-on-Denard piece?
Yes, but call it something other than "closing the chapter...."
"Turning the page" sounded a little too Bob Seger. Plus I'm several Two-Hearted Ales in. Words aren't my friend right now.
You say that as if a "little too Bob Seger" is a bad thing.
If I ran MGoBlog for a day...more Seger.
love him, but ready to move on...
he could be the inaugural member of the mgoblog hall of fame. shit, name the hall after him...
Yes and no.
Yes, I'd love to read it.
No, it'd make me have sad.
I say go for it.
he retires from the pros....he's still playing ball
...but TomVH is sitting, waiting paitently for someone to say they've bring him back. Jussayin.
First I'd start swingin' the banhammer like a drunken viking, cuz some of you bitches need to be told. Then as interim Lord of Mgoblog, I'd feel obligated to provide some musings of great wit, introspection and/or analysis to prove my own particular voracity. Undoubtedly though, in researching whatever fascinating topic that came to mind, I'd get bogged down hopelessly in pictures of cats disguised as burritos and fall asleep before I actually accomplished anything.
Hilarious. Haven't laughed that hard at a comment in a while.
More Monkey Rodeo videos, polls, and references.
Change diaries to earn 5000 points plus karmic kickback. Moderate diaries to insure they are worthy.
Points are worthless - but analysis and/or good reads are relatively rare but drive traffic - especialy if we get more consistent content.
The readership is a huge asset - points have value to them. Few people have the time to write. Those that do often move on to other blogs / jobs. I would try and leverage the points for more content.
spend the day talking to myself in the forum
Because I still don't get what kittens, snowflakes, or the term neg banging means but I see stuff like this referencesd all the time. I would also make SectionOne a moderator.
This is something we can probably actually do.
Not the Section 1 Mod thing. We're not monsters.
Allow me to paraphrase:
I would make a gradual, sensible improvement that would make everyone happy and provide lots of entertaining discussion. I would also activate Skynet.
(Edit: I think I have a half-finished MGoGlossary diary post somewhere on this here computer. I think I never posted it because I feel enormously unqualified to do so. Seems like a mod or something might be a better person to make it)
Move the entire blog onto a DJango or maybe a Ruby on Rails CMS platform. Bring back the old voting system.
Use some of my money to establish a server farm in some other country that doesn't respect DMCA and host football videos there.
Introduce a forum preview that showed tags, at least the tag as to which sport the topic is about.
Didn't Brian mention something back around the New Year about making some changes to the software which included a new voting system? This is what I'd do!
Because your karma value is at 0.
You must be disliked so much that as soon as a post of yours is seen someone negs it.
And not a single mention of Naked Guy yet?
I'd give me a billion points
PGB is obviously Hitler, so that makes you who, exactly? Kim Jung Il with his golden chopsticks? Caligula with his boats?
Bring. Back. NegBang!
Let RDT be a mod
Need more ND content, imo.
- Old voting system
- Collapsable comments or at least a line down the left margin so it's easier to skip the mini pissing matches that happen in a comment and get back to the actual thread
Way more LOLcats, football themed, of course.
Be careful what you wish for.
Everybody's covered the voting. I would change it so when someone replies to you, you get a notification. Even just for mobile this would change my life. I've commented so many times and never checked again. Case in point: I've asked if this was possible and I was just missing something, and never knew if someone answered. New case: probably won't check this comment.
I used to go back to old comments but too lazy now.
Allow free discussion of Hoke vs. Rodriguez
is trying to get me to buy Ohio T-shirts. (Honestly. Some company named Homage. Telling me to Shop Now.)
Cash checks and thank god for giving me money to talk about Michigan Athletics.
For each use of the word "haz"
Replace the Drupal forum module with phpBB.
After reading this thread it makes me wonder why we even come to MGoBlog since we all hate it so much.
I would allow ppl to write there own cover story
The posters here are great, but from a technical standpoint this place is awful. I post at a few forums and they're pretty intuitive as far as posting images, etc., but for some reason things like that are so difficult here we have threads dedicated to them. At times it chooses to remember me, at others it doesn't. It takes longer for the site to load as well.
Ban the people who go out of their way to click on a forum topic that they don't like so they can downvote it and post a comment like "no one cares about (enter topic here)"
If you don't like it, don't click on it jackass
Create a dedicated space where people who "totally don't care" about MSU and OSU can post and comment on the goings-on at these two programs. I love this place most of the time, but if Meyer or Dantonio's squads so much as fart in public this place blows up with redundant, self-congratulatory posts.
Also, more meaningful voting. It feels like the 2000 elections up in here! Am I right?
Also, lifted ban on political jokes.
I would love a section where there is nothing but videos. Highlight videos of recruits, old games, old highlights, etc. Whenever one goes up, I am thrilled since it gives me something to do at work. If there was a whole section, I would be thrilled
Videos of Kate Upton could be allowed too
I love the last bullet point. At least let the squiggly red line appear underneath the words I can't spell so I can correct them.
i would get rid of the horrible forum commenting layout.. its so annoying to follow along.
also, you cannot go to the second page of the forum (unless you use the sidebar)
