IF regular CFB is canceled, would a service academy win the national championship?
Navy AD suggests that the 3 service academies might be able to play each other even if no other FBS programs are allowed to play this season. At present this scenario probably will not happen, but if the pandemic does end up precluding the fall 2020 season - this could be a sweet silver lining.
No. Not possible. Notre Dame will weasel its way into this, and win a national championship.
To hell with Notre Dame.
Fig Things
Close, but not quite. Alabama is the king of claiming questionable championships. Imagine claiming about 10 “UCF under Scott Frost” national championships, that’s basically Alabama.
It’ll be just like one hundred years ago.
Cal and princeton were 1920 national champions
Dude, he's just making a generalization about how Army and Navy used to dominate back in the day. He doesnt mean exactly 100 years ago. No one asked you to tell us who won the the 1920 National Championship, and if anyone cared, they could google it themselves its not a secret only you know.
In WD's defense, despite this being one of ThePonyConquerers more well-adjusted posts, we rarely do know what he's actually talking about.
ROLL ON YOU BEARS!!!!
Alabama would somehow make a startup fighter pilot program and find a way into contention.
Bet that sick Engineering School of theirs would design one hell of a cool plane!
I'm just picturing a Cessna painted like the General Lee.
Turns out Ohio State's entire team was going to school for aerospace engineering online all along though.
What about the Coast Guard Academy?
I think the merchant marines would kick the coast guard's ass.
Space Force, bitches. Space Force
You rang?
If that were the case, how many schools have players in ROTC programs that would transfer to play?
There are ROTCs playing DI athletics? How many 20 hour a week jobs does an undergrad need these days?
I say we claim it and just see if it works
My money is on the space force
"rods from God"
No. I'm still waiting for the Power Five conferences to say screw the bowl system and create their own playoff system for 2020. That's more likely than the 2-1 Quantico Marines winning the national title.
Why would this be a sweet silver lining??
Because it would be cool and nostalgic to have a Service Academy claim a Natty
Exactly... and also to have the service academy games mean that much more.
If Michigan doesn’t or can’t win it then it doesn’t matter.
Somebody besides Clemson or Alabama. And fuck Ohio state
There will be no N.C. if 95% of the teams do not play this year.
The academy ADs beg to differ.
Who cares what they think, though? The correct answer is there would be no national champion. But I guess anyone could claim it.
Not necessarily true - if you look at the official NCAA football guidelines, there is not one single authority to declare a national champion. The NCAA recognizes various organizations/ methods that can declare a champion (with the CFP being a recent addition) but others exist, such as the AP poll. (This is why there are so many split and contested championships in cfb history. The cfp and bcs have reduced that, but not eliminated it.)
Thus, even if the CFB season was reduced to only the inter-service academy games, a champion can still be declared and recognized by the NCAA. It may not be unanimous or even consensus, but who says it must be?
No, Alabama would win.
It should be played in Portland to save tax payer money. Football in uniforms during the afternoon followed by riot gear and teargas by night.
