Icarus falls to Earth

Although JJ apparently flew too close to the sun the first 2 weeks, fortunately his return to earth didn't result in his metaphorical death.

In fact, his statistics are still on par for a record breaking season in several categories.  At the same time, Blake and Roman are still tracking well toward possible record years for Rushing and Receiving TDs, respectively.

I provided a snapshot of the averages needed for the remainder of the year, depending upon number of games played.  Of course, breaking a school record without playing 15 games would be a pyrrhic victory. :)

Now, let's get back on track for a record season!

Additionally, Epirus was QUITE FAR from Crete. Strictly speaking, to have a Pyrrhic victory would be like traveling all the way to Los Angeles to play USC for an in conference regular season game. NONSENSE! (which is perhaps a poor example, let's not even speak of the fact that Troy is ostensibly a completely different continent!)

Anyway, I could go for some souvlaki.

Are they on pace to break records though? They have complied these numbers against competition that is not even comparable to what they will see the rest of the season, so I do not see how one can extrapolate that out for the rest of the season. I would be interested to see what the record holders did against their three weakest competitors. I would also be interested in seeing how long they played in the three weakest games since this year they were pulled quickly, which could offset the bad competition.

Agree.  Extrapolating stats from effectively open practices to Big 10 slate with actual defenses (albeit some awful offenses) seems not useful.

Also JH was not at the controls of play calling.  So we will see if he reverts to his mean play calling.

Rutgers seems to have a legit defense, despite a LOL offense mostly.  Will be interesting to see how the entire offense especially the OL and run game does vs an entire team with players who won't be in sales or accounting in 2 years.

And if Harbaugh let's JJ air it out more than 22 times.

I saw a few people comparing JJ's INTs to TCU (which I don't really agree with), but people seem to forget how well he played after making those mistakes. Hoping for a huge comeback game against Rutgers and moving forward

Currently rooting for a 12 games stretch where the number is 0 and the categories are Passing Interceptions and re-opening of the fan bases deeply embedded TCU scars.

Woof - all to the good if JJ's one clunker comes against Bowling Green State University.

This observation from Gerdeman is pretty relevant if not prescient:

It should also be noted that all three interceptions came while McCarthy was being pressured. So rather than wait for him to screw up, it’s best to just try to make it happen. And then don’t forget to keep contain.

He's the only one who noticed, and we can expect to see a lot of pressure on McCarthy the rest of the way.

Also from Gerdeman:

"The entire story with this game now comes down to whether or not this was just a bored and overconfident quarterback. I think there is merit to that thought, but what this performance has done is let everyone know that while JJ McCarthy may complete 87% of his passes 60% of the time, he’s still liable to leave a few gifts on your front porch just like last year.

But that doesn’t mean you can rely on it. Because as we’ve also seen, he will beat your ass like you took a swing at his dog."

Now the crowd breaks and JJ appears
Looks Harbaugh in the eye
As he spreads his wings and shouts at the crowd
In the name of Yost, my father I'll fly

His eyes seem so glazed
As he flies on the winged helmets of a dream
Now he knows his coach is suspended
Now his wings turn to ashes his stats now upended

Fly on your way, like an eagle
Fly as high as the sun
On your way, like an eagle
Fly, touch the sun
