Hutchinson for Heisman?

Submitted by 1408 on November 28th, 2021 at 10:24 AM

Why isn’t this getting more traction? Stroud took a major step back yesterday. Young is good, not great. Why are we not hearing more about Hutch for this award?

Feels like Hutch for Heisman is now (deservedly) getting talked about quite a bit.  The Fox commentators after the game mentioned it repeatedly, and now this:

Michigan's performance also bolstered the Heisman odds of defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, who had seven tackles, including three sacks against the Buckeyes. Hutchinson, who previously was not listed, had the third-best odds to win the Heisman Trophy at 7-1 Saturday at DraftKings.

He's not going to win, but it would be awesome to see him get invited to NYC.

Here is Hutchinson's season stats so far in comparison to previous Heisman hopeful defensive linemen:

  • 2021 DE Aidan Hutchinson: 54 tlks, 32 solo tackles, 14.5 TFLs, 13 sacks, 2 FFs, 3 PBUs
  • 2009 DT Ndamukong Suh: 85 tlks, 52 solo tackles, 20.5 TFLs, 12 sacks, 1 FF, 10 PBUs, 1 INT - Finished 4th (Finalist)
  • 2012 DE Jadeveon Clowney: 54 tlks, 40 solo tackles, 23.5 TFLs, 13 sacks, 3 FFs, 1 FR, 2 PBUs - Finished 6th
  • 2016 DE Jonathan Allen - 69 tlks, 33 solo tackles, 16 TFLs, 10.5 sacks, 2 PBUs, 2 TDs - Finished 7th
  • 2019 DE Chase Young - 46 tlks, 32 solo tackles, 21 TFLs, 16.5 sacks, 6 FFs, 3 PBUs and a blocked punt (Missed 2 games due to injury) - Finished 4th (Finalist)

Only two recent defensive linemen even got invites to NYC, and I am not sure that Hutchinson's overall season stats is enough to get him in above the offensive players this year.

It is hands-down still the most dominant season I've ever seen from an individual player.

I still distinctly remember them showing a comparison that year during the Heisman week that compared Ndamukong Suh to the consensus #2 DT in Oklahoma's Gerald McCoy.

DT Gerald McCoy: 83 tlks, 51 solo tackles, 33 TFLs, 14.5 sacks, 2 FFs, 2 PBUs

               vs.

DT Ndamukong Suh: 85 tlks, 52 solo tackles, 20.5 TFLs, 12 sacks, 1 FF, 10 PBUs, 1 INT

Pretty comparable stats between the two, but the difference? Suh's numbers were just across 14 games in the 2009 season... McCoy's was over 40 games as a 3-year starter for Oklahoma.

It was the perfect way to highlight how absolutely dominant Suh was that year because Gerald McCoy was no slouch. It is a travesty Suh didn't win the Heisman in 2009.

Because purely defensive players will never win the Heisman and Shroud still put up like 400 yards yesterday.

Hutch deserves it, but it's the just the way it is

Stroud is good, so this is not me trashing him.  But he had about 6 yards per drop back yesterday, accounting for sacks.  His WR core is one of the best all time in the sport and certainly gave him about half those 400 yards.  That was nothing like a Heisman performance, either on paper or by the eye test.

He may still get it because there is not enough momentum for someone else, but Hutchinson was the best player on the field yesterday, has been all year, and based on the eye test has a strong case for the Heisman.  He probably does lack the paper numbers though.

Stroud wasn’t the problem yesterday, and probably doesn’t have a major drop off as some may think. With that said, Hutch was ABSOLUTELY the best player on the field when OSU O went against UofM D, and probably the best player overall (HH 5 TDS making the possible argument otherwise). If AH isn’t a Top5 player in all of college football, I’m missing something. I’m biased, but I’d vote him 1st for the havoc he creates alone…and he has the stats/data to go along with it. He makes UofM a contender!

Because he’s not up for the “Player with the Most Gaudy Offensive Stats Bullshit Media Award”?

He’ll be rewarded by playing on Sundays. Learn to enjoy things that aren’t stupid and ridiculous.

I completely missed this (ed: sorry, can't get the video clip to embed - hutch blows up the OT to get the pressure):

Michigan edge Aidan Hutchinson had 15 pressures vs Ohio State, per @PFF_College.

Prior to the week, the most pressures Ohio State’s OL had allowed to an opposing TEAM in 2021 was 13. pic.twitter.com/goWAvPOBpo

I remember when Woodson won it.  He wasn't a real consideration until late in the season but won it because he was dominate in the games that mattered.  He won it with his amazing performance against OSU, however, I don't think he wins it without that punt return TD.  Hutchinson is one of the best players in the game -- if not the best -- but unless he starts returning punts he is not going to win it.

I think Wasserman on the Athletic is pushing for a defensive player, if not outright saying Hutchison

https://theathletic.com/2982098/2021/11/27/wasserman-forget-bryce-young-and-the-qbs-this-is-the-year-to-give-the-heisman-to-a-defensive-player/

going to take a bit of time to catch on, if it even does.

Having a dominant B1G championship game is going to be needed to push that over the top imo, to have a realistic catch of winning.

At this point he should definitely be in NYC as a finalist

If he dominates Iowa like yesterday he absolutely will get an invite. There will be a first defensive player since Michigan’s Woodson narrative and he may actually win it. Yesterday was a monstrous performance that all eyes were upon.

Who else is voting for UM to give Hutch a couple of carries on short goal situations against Iowa for his Heisman resume? How glorious would it be to have Haskins as the FB in that situation?

I think he has couple things in his favor to make the trip to NY.  The Michigan narrative of getting over the hump with his performance and also the lack of offensive standouts throughout the country.

He is third in the Vegas odds now behind the 2 QBs.  That's traction.

Slightly different position but he owned that game like Suh in the Big 12 championship game back in the day.  He affected nearly every play.  Remarkable.

Won't win since it's an offensive reward but an invite to NY would be awesome!

With a big game and a win Hutch can position himself quite well. The dark horse though is Haskins. If we win and he goes for something like 150 and a couple TDs that gives him very impressive rushing numbers for the season and outstanding performances in the last two games voters would have watched. Also, the two front runners are Stroud and Young. If Bama loses next week then neither would be in the playoff and that would knock both down I would think.

How he hasn’t been getting more mention nationally is criminal…Kenneth Walker was talked about like he was the second coming of Bo Jackson.  If his last name was Bosa he’d be the Heisman Front runner, I don’t think he’s even a Bednarick final 3, but they trim the watchlist waaaaaay early.
