Huge day for Zach Charbonnet

Zach Charbonnet's first game at UCLA worked out great for him. His stats:

And it was all in the first half.

Here's the highlights:

I suppose you could say it was just against Hawaii, and wait till he faces a real team. Things will be very different then. But he did face Alabama 2 seasons ago, and played well. He didn't break of 20 and 40 yard runs. But still, he did well. Here's the stat line:

His highlights from that Alabama game (for some reason a couple of Haskins runs are in it):

Charbonnet had a very good true freshman season. He broke the freshman TD record:

With that score, the true freshman entered Michigan’s record books as the first Wolverine to ever record ten rushing touchdowns in their first season. Charbonnet went on to score his 11th rushing touchdown in the second quarter.

The previous record of nine was held by former Wolverines Tyrone Wheatley and Mike Hart, who both went on to have stellar careers at Michigan. Through nine games

Here's every TD from that year. Looks pretty good for a true freshman!

This is UCLA's schedule for the rest of the regular season. They have LSU next week. It will be a world of difference in toughness on defense from Hawaii to LSU. But facing a tough defense is not new to Chabonnet as can be seen in the Alabama video.

Chip Kelly may have found himself a very powerful offensive tool. He's been known to turn some players into stars. Maybe Zach Charbonnet will be next.

Oh, and BTW, the Charbonnet Heisman train has already pulled away from the station:

Let's see what things look like in the middle of October and talk about Heisman's then.

I liked Charbonnet and was pissed we lost him, and I hope he does well, but there's a whole 150 comment thread about him already and I hope we don't get a post every single week about him. Well, at least not only about him, I do appreciate the weekly rundown of past Michigan players in the NFL or transfers.

Are you trying to intimate that Rutgers and Hawaii have similar defenses?

Rutgers had the 84th-ranked defense last year; Hawaii had the 112th per SP+.  And that number is based on them only playing MWC offenses, which ended 53rd, 107th, 98th, 119th, 56th, 66th, 57th, 108th, and 60th in offense last year.  Rutgers, by comparison, faced the 109th, 29th, 2nd, 82nd, 42nd, 36th, 26th, 64th, and 35th offenses.  So no, Rutgers's defense is demonstrably better than Hawaii's last year and I see no reason to believe Hawaii is any better this season.

I don't believe OP is an OSU troll. Leaving aside the subject, this is an impressive post. There are embedded images, good research, a coherent narrative, and correctly spelled words. It took probably an hour to put together, maybe more. I don't think an OSU troll would have the patience/ability to do this.

More likely, it's a self-hating Michigan fan. For whatever reason, people are willing to spend tons of effort on these relatively minor obsessions. OP needs to spend more time outside touching grass and interacting with others and less time following a football team across the country featuring one player who used to play for Michigan.

He is definitely an OSU troll - he tends to post negative things about current players and coaches, puff pieces about recruits we will never get and former players and coaches (Jedd Fisch) that have left on this or his other obvious account.

His world view is Ohio-based and he has limited knowledge and bad takes about actual Michigan players and football in general. He puts together all this source material for posts because he doesn't have the same intrinsic knowledge that an actual fan has.

It's the worst kind of troll really - he is dedicated though - has been here for at least 5 years.

I don't know about all of that, at least with respect to Charbonnet. We played without 3 of our starting OL last season, and Haskins looked better than Charbonnet, so he should have gotten more touches.  If being second string is transfer-worthy to him, then I'm glad he left. It also probably helped us get DE so I'm cool all around.

16 carries for the season is on the coaching. There is no GD way you can spin that. You people are ridiculous. If that was your kid would you say "welp you werent good enough" cumong man. 16 carries was enough for the coaches to see our best freshman RB in over a decade wasnt good enough? GTFO wasted talent of the worst kind.

He had lots of opportunities to show what he had. He had 5 carries for 3 yards against MSU. Should we have given him 10? At Haskins proved early he was the better back and got the majority of the carries because of it. When you're the back up, you have to go in and make something of the carries you get, and he did not. How is that on the coaches?

"Lots of opportunities"?  That's ridiculous.  I think that he had 19 carries on the season (not 16 as was previously referenced).  He should have been getting that many carries per game.  He also led the team in YPC (for players with more than one carry).

He was the best RB on the roster....and now he plays for UCLA.

If you take away his long run against Minnesota, he averaged 3 yards per carry on the season. Quit using that stat without context. He was MAJORLY ineffective and had a single long run that over doubled his ypc.

You’re clearly on drugs and didn’t watch the team at all last year if you think he’s the best RB on the team. Now you’re calling for the coaches to CONTINUE feeding a running back that isn’t producing? Isn’t giving the ball to guys who aren’t getting yards counterproductive to a good offense?

Pick and choose a 19 carry span across any of our backs and you will find some ugly numbers. Hell man thats a half for some of Chris Perrys games. Which I bet he had much lower stats on 19 carries at times. Its funny how the run vs Minnesota is nothing but the 5 against MSU are everything. WTF is going on here? If he had 60 carries ok i get it. 19 man nineteen. Thats a full game of runs to get a feel for a player not a half a season. You dont jettison someone on less than 20 carries. He isnt the best because of Minnesota and he isnt the worst because of MSU. But that offensive coaching has turned several cant miss players into near misses or total misses. Its not the ingredients its the damn recipe.

He wasn't "jettisoned" he left the program on his own and I actually agreed with his decision. [No, I have no personal connection to him.] It should have been obvious to everyone, even Charbonnet that Haskins played better. This coming season if it was only Charbonnet versus Haksins, you probably stick around and figure with a better O-Line you can beat Haskins in training camp. But that's not the whole story.

You have Blake Corum, who looked really good in his not counting first year and will be looking for an increase in playing time this coming season. You have incoming freshman Donovan Edwards, one of the highest rated backs to come to Michigan in a long time. That makes for a crowded running back room. If I am Charbonnet, I think it is in my best interest to look around for a program with a less crowded running back room. Charbonnet is from the West Coast so playing for a Pac-12 team means not having to play against the defenses of Wisconsin, Penn State and Ohio State.

It was a good move for Charbonnet.

So what you’re saying is that Charbonnet peaked, was clearly yet another 5* bust under JH, and he is doomed to mediocrity?  That’s awfully big statement to make given poor RB performance and retention under Harbaugh.  Again, I’m not saying ZC will be awesome, but I also don’t think 4 sporadic carries a game behind a bad OL as a true freshman is really a great litmus test.  It’s hard to get any momentum going.  It’s on the coaches to retain talented players past their freshman year for just that reason.  ZC isn’t the first talented RB to leave under JH.  Maybe you think our luck is really that bad but this is a pattern.

Don’t be ridiculous about Heisman. I mean, I’ll be glad to eat crow but c’mon. This is a total homer thing to say but I like Corum more than Charbonnet
