How many scholarships do we currently have available for the '15 class?

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

The new coach (*** ********) will need to hit the ground running when it comes to recruiting.

We've currently got 6 commits, with 2 of those potentially soft commits. How many spots does that leave for the 2015 class?

I know this question is going to be asked 5 million times once the hire is announced, so I figured I may as well ask now so we can all be educated together. Yay.

Edit #1: Answer according to pearlw is 11 + any additonal transfers and/or 5th year players who do not return.

It's raining outside and I'm getting a slow start to the morning as I'm still laying in bed playing fetch with my 4.5 month old Golden Labrador Retriever with her pink KONG bone...and I felt like being silly. That answer sufficient enough for you or do we always have to be condescending on this site about every little detail? You still understood what the subject of the post was about, didn't you?

Here are updated numbers after the Ferns transfer, Funchess declaring for draft, and Morgan redshirting.

74 scholarships are accounted for (so room for 11 in incoming class) assuming no more attrition which is obviously unlikely.

74 number is based on the following assumptions:

A) Graham Glasgow, Ryan Glasgow, and Joe Kerridge are now considered scholarship players. All came in as walkons but G Glasgow and Kerridge had scholarships in 2013 we know. It wasnt made public which walkons were on scholarship in 2014 but I think its fair to count these 3 as scholarship players given they all effectively started this year and will be considered key returners next year. If you disagree, adjust your numbers accordingly.

B) This number assumes all players come back for their 5th year if they redshirted previously. Those that this would apply to are Bellomy, Hayes, Kerridge, Heitzmann, Miller, G Glasgow, D Morgan, and Countess. It  is always possible some one doesnt come back for 5th year whether it is their choice or coaches choice.

As a follow up, the breakdown of returning players by their eligibility for next year (including redshirts for Peppers and Morgan):

Senior Yr eligibility in 2015: 17 players

Junior Yr Eligibility in 2015: 27 players

Soph Yr Eligibility in 2015: 18 players

Fresh Yr Eligibility in 2015: 12 players (Peppers, Ways, Speight, D Harris, Bunting, Pallante, Winovich, Furbush, Bushell-Beatty, Marshall, Wangler, Watson)

Finally, if you look at the depth chart by year  on this site, I havent updated it recently (as I had done most of the recent updates) but these numbers are in line with those once accounting for recent attrition and redshirt news.

It may make sense to have Bellomy back to have another QB to avoid having to burn a redshirt if that is the route they go with Malzone. If they decide to redshirt Malzone and Bellomy is not there, they would only have 2 QBs on roster so any injury or helmet coming off could cause scary situation where you may be forced to waste a redshirt for a couple plays.

Remember Bellomy had to play for 2 series vs PSU this year. While he did not perform well, his presence on the roster did allow them to avoid burning the redshirt of Speight for 2 series. DG was injured in that game for a couple series and Morris was still unable to play.

It really makes no sense to keep Bellomy. He's no better than a walk-on. Seriously, he's perhaps worse than Nick Sheridan. I'll grant that they're different offenses, but I had less dread about the QB position when Sheridan was on the field than when Bellomy has played. You might as well throw Garrett Moores out there.

Jim Harbaugh's wide receivers haven't been extremely productive. He's better at developing a running game and play action passing - including to the tight ends - off of it. From 2008-2010 at Stanford, his leading receivers had 508, 926, and 857 yards. Meanwhile, his leading rusher had 1,100+ yards each year (including 1,800 yards from Toby Gerhart in 2009).

He's no longer in the CFL either...not that we couldn't pull him away from the CFL.

Come back Soup!

Come back Tyrone!

Come back Andy!

-----------------------------------------------------

Jim Harbaugh - QBs/Head Coach
Tyrone Wheatley - RBs
Erik Campbell - WRs/Pass Game Coordinator
Kevin Koger - TEs
Andy Moeller - OLs/Run Game Coordinator
Brady Hoke - DTs
Greg Mattison - OLB/DEs
DJ Durkin - ILB/Defensive Coordinator
Roy Manning - CBs
Curt Mallory - Ss

...then when Mattison retires, Manning goes to OLB/DEs and Charles Woodson takes over the CBs. It's happening.

Oops, forgot a special teams coach...Kevin Koger, go make yourself useful. You too Manning. Co-roles for the both of you. Don't fuck it up.

I never saw that disclosed publicly in 2014 as opposed to the prior year (2013) where there was a video of Hoke announcing it to the team. I was guessing that was because this year they might have not wanted to put out a video in the preseason praising them given that Glasgow was scheduled to be suspended for the first game. If what you say is true, I wonder if the arrest had an effect on the scholarship for this year.

There was video of G Glasgow and Kerridge receiving a scholarship in 2013. Im pretty certain there was never any video or news in 2014 about this.

If anyone has a link about 2014 scholarships for walkons, please post it as I looked pretty hard for this all year (and raised it on here a couple times) but there was never any media or official news that I could find.

There was a midseason feature on Kerridge in 20114 on mgoblue I recall where he talked about the joy when he first got a scholarship but it showed the same 2013 footage and he talked about how it had to be earned each year as it wasnt guaranteed...so it was far from clear as to whether he got one in 2014 and it didnt address the Glasgows situation.

The new coach *** ******** would would quickly get up to speed on what is in the cupboard. Perhaps Nuss and anyone that stayed around could help with assessments. Should have enough time to pull what is needed by signing day. Its a good thing when you can have a great coach that would turn heads!

That means a lot of returning players and the head coach doesn't lose a year in recruiting. A class of 15 is sounds so much better than a class of 25 right now. Get the big class after next year.

There are still some big needs that will need to be addressed. The situation at defensive end is scary going forwards to me as reecent recruiting missteps mean there is little future depth...Clark and Beyer are no longer there and there have been huge misses there with Da'Shawn Hand last year, KLS picking UCLA this year, and Darian Roseboro decommitment.

I also think we need to get Clark back into the fold and get another quality OL. Going to need a DB as well.

If we keep who we have and filled the last, say 8 spots with...

Speed RB/SLOT - ??????
TE - Clark
OT - ??????
DE - Wheatley
NG - ??????
LB - Masina
DB - Kinnel
DB - ?????

Even if the question marks are 3/4 star types that aren't as highly regarded as the four guys named that still a solid class.

A speed demon who can play slot/RB/KR/PR, another OT since we have so many OT/OG tweeners, a big fat boy in the middle who can plug up some holes in short yardage situations, and another DB would make me all giggles.

I agree with the earlier poster about.  I would put Peppers in there and run wildcat every play before using Bellomy again.

I'm sure he is a fine young man, but he struggles with the spotlight on him.

Your numbers tie out exactly to what i posted earlier in the thread.

My number was 74 for returning scholarships.

You are saying that R Glasgow and Kerridge should be counted as walkons not scholarship players, which as I said is a judgment call. If I change to your assumption, that gets me down to 72.

Then you count the 6 committed players which gets it to 78...which is your number.

So it looks like we tie out exactly. So in summary, there is currently room in 2015 recruting class for 11 scholarships in total (if you say Kerridge and R Glasgow will be on scholarship) or 13 scholarships (if you count Kerridge and R Glasgow as walkons for next year as you do).

I always assume walk-ons are walk-ons since they chose to attend the school without the promise of a scholarship. I think most coaches would view those guys as year-to-year guys. Some schools have oversigning; others use the walk-on program. There's also a chance that someone like Kerridge would be expendable with a spread-oriented coach, kind of like what happened with the fullback (Mark Moundros, for example) under Rich Rodriguez.

Fair point...I understand your logic completely as that is why I made sure to point out the assumption that I was making as I knew that someone may have an issue with that part. However, you seem to have included Graham Glasgow as a scholarship player in your list which is counter to that argument as he came in as a walk-on also.

Graham Glasgow has started every game (except the 2014 season opener due to suspension) at two different positions for the past two years, so I include him going into his fifth year. Ryan Glasgow was a backup in 2013, and Kerridge is a part-time player at a position that often gets subbed out, so I'm somewhat indifferent to including them.

With the coaching change I'm glad we only have room for a few. I love how this is never brought up on ESPN when they say recruiting is going to be affected this year by the coaching change....Theres only 9 spots!!!
