Placing words in the other person's mouth is not a valid form of argumentation.

Secondly, can you prove that this defense is ran by Dantonio? Seeing that it isn't the same as the one he ran at OSU and the fact that I have read articles where the defense was really developed mainly by Narduzzi I would say that your argument is lacking. Dantonio is a fine DC in his own right. I know that. But I think you greatly underestimate Narduzzi's role in creating that defensive tactically and especially, emotionally. His arrival in the 2nd half of the Baylor game changed how MSU's defense played in the 2nd half. His presence gave that defense an emotional boost it needed.

Thirdly, these are most definitely not "vaguel rhetorical" questions  I am asking. No one knows how MSU will look without Narduzzi because no one knows what to expect from Harlan Barnett. They may be better, worse, or the same. But the questions are very much real and precise.

I think you're underestimating how good a defensive mind Dantonio is. Narduzzi may have helped make the defense elite, but Dantonio still has all the pieces to have a good defense. Plus their defensive recruiting hasn't exactly fallen off with Narduzzi gone...

Ugh, look what you made me do. Compliment MSU. I'm going to go wear some maize and blue PJs and eat some michigan pancakes to get this off me.

Not sure about 5*s but Dantonio has quite a few solid 4*s so far this year. Like JH said, we are no longer the top dogs in the yard. With a couple quality seasons and more summer satellite camp experiences, we'll jump up in the recruiting rankings. On a unrelated note, does anyone know what Harbaugh's stance is on accepting commits and if all offers are commitable?

Dantonio did not have a shot with higher guys, but still choose 2 stars. he took what he could get even if they were not as good as others. Harbaugh has a ton of interest from high star guys, but CHOOSED to take these guys too. They are of the same quality to him. Dantonio didn't have that option. important distinction.

Kids can say they have interest, but not really be interested. That happens in recruiting a lot.Michigan still has cache as does the name Harbaugh. Being interested in investigating is not the same as wanting to committ. Two different things.

Which highly rated kids do you believe are only saying they have interest without truly being interested? Gary? Bredeson, Davis, Kelly, Upshur, Hamilton, Hawkins?

You seem to be making arguments that UM can't win (beat OH) recruiting a certain way (implying their current way) and then compare them to Sparty and talk about 4/5 stars not being interested enough to commit. This class won't likely look like MD's previous classes. It will very likely be better.

It's not like these kids don't have athletic ability or the right physical measurables.  The coaches want kids that are the right fit for the program and system, not just the ones with the most starz by their name. What are you worried about?  You're honestly second guessing this staff of respected long-time college and NFL coaches?   Also - Dantonio had no choice but to settle for 2 stars and was able to develop them. Harbaugh is picking the exact players he wants.  There are no (or very few players) who are going to come in and contribute significantly as freshman no matter how many stars they have so developement is needed no matter what.

Of harbaugh recruits.

Athletic
Positional flexibility
Smart
Hard working (earn their offers with performance)

Those are all good things. I trust this approach.

Bobby Bowden had a great quote about this in his prime.

He was asked about a player on his team that supposedly had legit 4.3 speed in the 40. He responed something to the effect of "4.3 speed means he just gets out of position faster."

Despite all the focus on athleticism (especially in an era of 24/7 year round football coverage starting with the combine circus), football is still a game of mental preparation, understanding, positioning, ancitipation, and technique.

2014 PSU, despite its unathletic defense, did a fantastic job of defending Ohio State in Happy Valley thanks to great coaching, gameplanning, and adjustments.

The higher recruits are coming and will fill out this class. Harbaugh is just hand picking some of the lower star recruits that are normally part of a class. No need to get your panties in a bunch.

Once again, it is nice to see these camps turning out results for near-future classes. I am sure that - sometime in the next week or so - we'll get a summary of those who committed during this period, and I would be intrigued by that. Hopefully, someone obliges with such a post.

For now, welcome to Michigan, Rashad Weaver!

As a coach, there's nothing more useful and beneficial in the recruiting process than an in-person evaluation. I tend to put trust in the coaches on these kids since they saw most of them at the camps. The in-person evaluation is better than just watching film alone and it is without a doubt much more beneficial than recruiting site rankings.

True, and there's no singualr evaluation because what you see in person has to match with what you see on film. I'm just saying that seeing a kid in person is extremely important. I've seen many kids that look good on film and then you find flaws once you workout the kid.

I guess my main point is that the in-person evaluation is probably the most valuable evaluation you can have as a coach. That's why I tend to give the benefit of the doubt to coaches who have seen the kid in person that they end up offering that may be lower ranked on recruiting services.

Harbaugh's taking a lot of "high floor" kids that have big bodies and should be able to contribute on special teams at the worst. I suppose he's looked at the roster, noticed the large amount of Hoke kids that haven't panned out/ are unable to contribute, and decided to stock up on kids that are ready to contribute early.

Recruits out there, take notice, there may be ver y few spots left the month's end!

You need to commit now!  Harbaugh waits for no one.
