So glad we landed him. Lost in the shuffle of the rest of this recruiting cycle has been a lot of the top guys in the state not going here. I’ve never been a big “backyard is more important” guy but good to get a talented kid like this at a position of need.

Welcome, Amir Herring to the University of Michigan.  While your successful recruitment has been anticipated, there is very little that is certain these days.

There is no doubt the rapid changes in college recruiting and transfer rules, NIL, etc. have created more uncertainty than ever in predicting future team rosters.  Adding these uncertainties to the rapidly evolving conference alignments and the increasing mobility of coaches creates an atmosphere of unpredictability and college football chaos.  [Yet, simultaneously, recent events of the worldwide pandemic, a major war in Europe, violent political insurrection and multiple mass shootings in the U.S., plus historic Supreme Court reversals of long-standing precedent, all reflect the same type of unpredictability and chaos.]

I'm sure most readers are familiar with the following lines, their source and context; they bear repeating:

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way—in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only."

So apparently he's always wanted to come here and we recruited him but then cooled on him for some who the hell knows reason. Then Nebraska was pushing hard for him and then we changed our mind and once he felt the love again that was it.

Just speculating, but he has the offer list of a 3- or 3.5-star guy. Quite often a Midwest guy with his ranking (Top 300) will have a couple of top-tier SEC schools, ND, and OSU.

Penn State is his only other offer comparable to Michigan.

I like that he's in the class (in-state recruit at a spot where development can and often is spread out over multiple years).

Great to add high-quality OL talent and regain some recruiting momentum. Moore has assembled a deep group to keep up the UM tradition of excellent OLs.

Bob Ufer would have loved this commitment.

"...down the sideline like he had a hot  (Amir) Herring in his cumberbund!"
