I really thought about taking this down because it is old news, and yet, some of the responses in here are making it worth the slight redundancy, particularly Ace's GIF above, which I had not seen yet. This could end up being another case where posters step in to create victory from what could have been another thread marked for deletion. Well done, MGoBlog.

From the Publix syrveillance cameras

We can't be sure whether Winston might've had some pre-arranged contact with the employee behind the seafood counter. There's no question that he took the packaged crab legs off the counter top while there were some other people waiting for service. The employee behind the counter might've been serving another customer at the time, but it looks like he motions towards Winston after Winston takes the package.

The only thing this incident makes me think of is my wife's grandmother (may she rest in peace). She always added an "s" to the names of stores or brands that didn't, in fact, end with an "s." For some reason, though, she always referred to Jameis' favorite grocery store as "Public."

I don't know, man. If you're the highest profiled player in CFB and you're taking ANYTHING for free or as a gift, you have to think someone is going to see it. I don't claim to know Winston's financial situation but I'm sure he could find something other than free crab legs to satisfy his hunger. Crab legs are for NFL Draft Day after you sign the contract. Kind of hard to plead ignorance with all the compliance rules in place these days. Glad he owned up to it and moved on from what seems like a minor charge.

Look, I jumped all over him from the beginning about "how stupid could you be, etc, etc" but these guys get hooked up with stuff all the time. This really was more of an issue with a guy in Publix not being in on the deal and blowing the whistle because either he didn't know any better or he wanted to see him get in trouble. This wasn't a "I'm gonna go rip this place off" kind of thing. There was an arrangement, which is still likely an NCAA violation as ridiculous as that is, but not theft. These guys have people helping them out wherever they go this wasn't malicious or deceitful. I think if you really want to condemn 20 year old kid for something that's fine just make sure it's worthy of the condemnation. Once more details came to light I got off that train. Winston has plenty of flaws and he's a complete and utter moron but despite all the attention this got, it goes in a different category from the other incidents.

the NCAA and member schools should offer a full cost of attendance scholarship. Beyond that the athletes should be allowed to sign endorsement contracts, sell autographs, and even get free tats or crablegs and drive loaner cars from third parties on the side so they can capitalize on their skills when most are at the highest level they'll ever play at - i.e., at the higest earning potential.

I don't see that this hurts their amatuerism status - they still are not "paid to play" by the schools. And if anything, bringing most of it above board is better.

In a free market, they should be able to get the most out of their fleeting moment of fame, much the same as olympic athletes.

So he asked an employee for crab legs and the employee got them for him and in his mind that makes it OK to just walk out?? So when my GAM GAM has the meijer employee to get her jar of prunes off the top shelf that she can just leave?? Winston still doesn't get it and he will have many more controversies

Jameis says that the last time he was there, the employee said that he's take care of Jameis e.g. "I got you". My guess is that this happens a lot for FSU football stars and Jameis thought it wasn't a big deal.
