Harbaugh Explains Why The Will Wear Maize

Submitted by CarlosSpicyweiner21 on
It is to celebrate the anniversary of when the school first decided to make Maize and Blue their official colors. Truthfully I wonder what Jim thought when the higher ups told him to say this was the reason and to not just say it was because Nike/Jordan Brand backed a massive truck full of cash to the schools back door.

They will wear the regular uniforms in the games to come. It's gonna be ok. The kids like it.

We have more important things to worry about. Now, any word on the Alex Kozan vision quest?

Among 100 mgobloggers. Come on. You somehow know it is unpopular among 100s of thousands of fans? News just broke last night. Time will tell and the jersey sale will tell not to mention the reaction we haven't seen from the players. Not picking a fight but unpopular is too strong a word and it is too early to tell.

"Uh, Jim, hi, this is Phil from Nike. We're going to need you to forward our marketing strategy's official storyline about maize when they ask you about the uniforms. See that big check over there and all that gear with the Jumpman? Great, thanks."

Are people so upset about this because you can now see our Nike mustard color is not actually maize and what it always has been?  People bitched about making it darker after the Adidas era and it was totally ruined.  Now you can truly see how much this is like Toledo/WVU mustard orangey yellow instead of traditional Michigan maize.

Imo I don't really think it's about recruiting or pressure from Nike or tradition or anything really. I just think someone presented this idea and enough influential people liked/were receptive to it and that's that. Not every decision needs a case study.

I should clarify - by "liked/were receptive" I meant that they felt that way about the entire concept of having a special jersey and what its benefits were, including profits/sales, exposure etc. Michigan can always trot out a special uniform for big games, but many times chooses not too. This time they did.

When Devin Bush shoots through a gap on his way to his first sack, his uniform will be so beautiful. When Maurice Hurst rubs his belly after a QB s[n]ack, that uniform will be so beautiful. When Chris Evans jukes a Gator out of his Crocs, that uniform will be so beautiful. etc

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw the Maize Jerseys at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

Yes, Nike makes money selling apparel. Florida gets to wear all blue and Michigan gets to wear all maize. If you don't like it, then just win.
Beat Florida.
Beat Penn State.
Beat MSU.
Beat OSU.
Win Big 10 championship.

The traditional teams don't need it just like they don't need RichRod fancy spread schemes to win. Leave the all maize, glow in the dark uniforms to the Oregon's, Maryland's & teams trying g to get attention. Bama, Penn St, USC will all recruit top notch without the glitz.

So how exactly does the neutral field home team / away team thing work?  Do they flip a coin to see who gets to choose their uniform, then the other takes the opposite?

I ask because it seems like Michigan is always the "away" team.  There is no better uniform in all of sports than Michigan's "home" uniform.  I wish we could see it more in games like this, and in bowl games.

Listened to some sports radio on the way home.  Yeah, hot take central.  But universal dismay that this uniform sucks ass.  Michigan will be a laughingstock when they come out of the tunnel.  It'll look like a big package of Kraft Singles.

I don't care about alternate unis, but this one is terrible.

is this really about the recruits and players? maybe from UM's perspective, thats what they want you to think. this is about selling jerseys to fans. thats how Nike and M get paid.

Good grief - it's one game. I hate messing with the traditional uniforms, but I'm also not leaving sleep over this.
