I just hope it's not the case that we could have kept Baxter if this had happened earlier.  Oh well, no sense crying over what can't be changed

It must be brutal to be the spouse/child of a football coach.  There can't be many assistant coaches who are able to spend, say, 20+ years in the same city if that's what their families want.  The money is good for a lot of these guys, but you'd better be okay with moving.

What you said reminds me of an interview with Mattison back in 2011 - when he first arrived in Ann Arbor, someone (I forget which reporter) asked him point blank why he would come back to Ann Arbor after all this time. His answer was fairly lengthy, but the main point was that, in his words, he was "tired of being a nomad". I mean, he's at a different stage of life / family than most assistants, but I would think that it gets to anyone in that position after a while - the lack of stability has to be maddening, even a bit depressing in a way.

absolutely.  plenty of jobs are tough in that way but coaches are up there.

1 reason why it shouldnt suprise that baxter went back to cali (where im pretty sure hes coached for most of past 20 years).

jackson is a good dude and solid coach so hed be tough to replace but harbaugh will obviously find the best possible candidate / fit for his program (if necessary)

Well that's what happens when you hire great assistants. You wonder why most of Hoke's assistants never went anywhere...

Harbaugh hired great ones last year. He'll hire great ones again if need be.

I realize it's a position in the NFL, but it is Cincy we're talking about here. Given the choice to coach and mold the minds of young men or dealing with a bunch of jailbirds and basket cases, I'd choose the former. I like Marv Lewis, but I don't see him lasting much longer there

If it were a different team I'd understand mutual interest, but this is Cincy. A playoff team but their defense is undisciplined and out of control. Not to mention Marvin Lewis is one more "one-and-done" in the playoffs away from being fired himself. If the NFL is where he wants to go it would probably be better to wait for a better opportunity.

Really liked the way he used the dbs this year. Allowed Peppers a rather long leash and he stopped a lot of plays before they got started. The entire D backfield benefitted from his instructions and another year under him is only going to help them as they go forward in their careers. Would hate to see him leave.

Is it just me or is everything in Ohio poisonous shit?

Yeah, I know Cincinatti is almost in Kentucky, which makes it doubly cursed in my opinion.

And their nasty chili sucks.
