Great article on how MSU started the ugliness

Submitted by blueandmaizeballs on November 3rd, 2022 at 12:27 PM

Mods please delete if this has been posted.  I hope I got the link to work.   Anyways I thought this was a great take on how MSU started most of the hate or bad bad blood in the rivalry and it started with the Ahole Mark D.     I found it to be great that there are facts that bring this to light that not both sides created this mess and it was mainly the MSU side.

Thanks for posting. The whole thing, by Chris Balls, is worth reading, but here are a few of the points he made about Dantonio

• Asked for a “moment of silence” after Michigan lost to Appalachian State

* Made fun of Mike Hart’s height (which I believe is the worst, not for any harm but because a university employee belittled a student)

• Lined his team up to face Michigan's team before the National Anthem, an apparent intimidation tactic

• His players twisted Robinson’s helmet with apparent intent to injure, and his defensive coordinator bragged they played with “60 minutes of unnecessary roughness.”

I'm calling him "Madtonio" now.

Speaking from my own experience, having to spend time sitting down with a medical doctor at their computer to show them how to save an email attachment will do that

I once had a client who emailed a set of x-rays via encrypted email, and the clinic which received it couldn't figure out how to decrypt the email, so they subjected the patient to another round of x-rays at their clinic.

tl;dr - the struggle is real

For what it's worth, as a medical doctor tasked with navigating approximately one billion different systems (EMR, radiology programs, billing, two emails, single sign on systems, statewide records, DEA/licensing programs, restricted prescribing confirmation systems, insurance systems, etc...), on top of patient care and research, the struggle is indeed real.  I'd never expose a patient to something they didn't need because of those challenges but when I ask for help, I really appreciate the IT folks who don't act like Nick Burns.  Keep fighting the good fight out there.

Embed will not work for me if I create a topic. If I get the embed Info of a tweet, click the media embed, and click save, it just spins. Sometimes I get a cloud flare error. That's on a computer. Also can't upload a picture from my iPhone 90% of the time. Says it only accepts .jpg .gif even though I'm attempting to upload a .jpg file. Keeps me from even trying to use media in posts.

For a long time, I didn't know how to link. Then someone—wish I could remember who that helpful person was—posted the procedure in a comment, and then I knew

Ever since, when someone shows the link but doesn't use the link (paper clip-looking) icon to make it a link, I mention the procedure.

(The link icon looks like a paper clip, which another helpful soul pointed out this summer, so thanks to that other helpful person too.)

It's actually two links of a chain, connected together.   (The one to its direct, disabled by default, breaks a link and makes it text instead -- hence the image is a broken chain).  It may look like a paper clip, but once you see the chain, I suspect you can't unsee it. :)

Paper clips are typically used for attachments rather than for links, FWIW.

I'm not that tech savvy (I use it a lot but have little interest in getting better at it or expanding my knowledge beyond need to know) and this site really isn't that intuitive to use. I still don't know how to embed a video or a GIF. And when I do embed a photo, sometimes it doesn't fit the format and then what? I find a different photo. But like I said, it's not so important to me that I spend a ton of time learning how to do it.

The strength of the article is the detailing of some of the history.

Sometimes the "everyone needs to be better" articles are just the lazy journalistic equivalent of the "double foul," when it's obvious that one player committed a penalty, and the other was really just there.

Also, this is the first place that I read of the conflict of interest that the B1G Commissioner's son is a Staee TE. He needs to recuse himself, and from among equally valid options, the penalty needs to lean to the side of severity in order to make the impartiality plain.

If that were my kid, and I were the commish, my kid would have announced his transfer out of the B1G the next morning.

Glad that MSU's culture problems are being exposed. This Michigan rage they've been fueled on since the little brother comments is toxic and their behavior is finally seen nationally. Michigan's main issues seem to be 1) disrespecting them and 2) I guess that time Lewan grabbed poor Will Gholston's helmet. This is one sided toxicity and I am glad MSU is being roasted for it

To be clear the "Little brother" comment came after the "moment of silence" by Dantonio to start the year - and sure there have been issue on both sides since - but to my (biased) eyes most of the M incidents were pretty silly/lame and not truly born of hatred - i.e. the "go Blue" skywriter - (thanks Dave!) the "stake in the field" etc.

To the initial post -- the crazies on the MSU side will never believe that the D. Bush incident was anything but a master-planned motivational and PR ploy orchestrated by Harbaugh.  I personally believe that the timing (and the helmets) of the MSU field-walk was a calculated power move by Dantonio -- and I have as much proof as they do. (= none)  Could the M players have avoided and/or not escalated the conflict? Yes - but M was supposed to have access rights to the field during that time-period so they were within their rights to refuse to move.

MSU got a $10K fine after the stormtrooper march in 2018. Definitely a large chunk of the MSU fan base loved not only beating us on the field but the personal beatings along with "it'll never be over!" - Hart has since said he regretted ever saying the LB comment.

MD left with a huge bonus thanks to 8-2 run from 2008-2017 (but 6 of those were from the two worst coaches in UM FB history). JH is 3-2 since the monsoon loss, and I've stricken the COVID year from my memory.

Personally, even though he looks crazy on the sideline, I think Mel is a decent guy who doesn't condone this post game attack (unlike MD who would be smirking in his post game conference).

This rivalry is likely to return to the Bo/Mo vs. Perles era where we win 2 of 3 (which matches the series history win percentage). The real key is how/when Mel is able to stop the kind of rage that happened in the tunnel.

Kinda sorta...  Hart used a basketball analogy for the game that day.  MSU had taken an early lead, and Michigan came back to win.  So Hart said it was like a backyard bball game against your little brother - you let him get a lead and feel good for a bit, then you just take it away and win.

If I remember right Hart was asked if he considers MSU the little brother, He says "Yep....if thats what they think thats what I think" in response to something Javon Ringer said earlier that week about Michigan treating them like a little brother, but that seems to have been lost in space because no one remembers it.

MSU was called Little Brother looooong before Mike Hart said it in 2007.

And Jamele Hill (eye roll) saying that MSU wants desperately to be the team Michigan hates the most…these complaints seem to be 75 years too late.  Where was all this foot stomping when Bo, Moeller and Lloyd were beating them every year?

I assume the obsession is all because of Dantonio since he got his panties in a major twist over the Hart comments.  And with him coaching (and Michigan taking a nosedive to hell) Sparty was now having more than just 1-2 good seasons per decade now…so they must have thought they earned a right to have their feelings validated…I don’t know.

Whatever.  All I know is, I will never root harder for Illinois to win a game than I will this weekend.

UM-MSU, like many in-state rivalries, has a long history of natural hatred based on proximity, competition for resources, a whole host of things. It has always been heated and nasty.

The perfect storm is Dantonio embraced the worst parts of the rivalry and his success meant two things:

1) MSU felt vindicated and validated for the behavior.

2) We could no longer pretend to ignore them and pretend to be indifferent, and our genuine dismissiveness turned to hatred.

Add in the ever growing news and social media and it seems like it’s really ugly. But remember, calling them “Little Brother” has been around forever—is probably not even unique to UM-MSU—and yet a majority of people think Mike Hart invented it because they had personally never heard it before. Or forgot that they had.

HM, I disagree...Sure there was annoyance and irritation regarding MSU, but I don't remember feeling any hatred or being exposed to hatred for MSU. (going back to the seventies here...)

Recently? (since Dantonio) feelings have steadily deteriorated towards disdain. So, it took a while but I'm really moving towards hatred with the lot of them.

Also, "trouble with the snap" really seemed to bring out the ugliness in that fan base.
