This weekend, possibly beginning with today if I can find the motivation, will be spent planning the vegetable garden that my daughter seems to want to start. We will actually sit down with some guides on things that will grow well in southeastern Michigan and I will let her select the veggies as well. I might tack on some that aren't fast-maturing so I can have a personal project, but in the case of my daughter, I an going to shoot for stuff that she can harvest relatively quickly (which, for some edible plants, is 60 days or so) so we can maximize the accomplishment here.

My other projected accomplishments are, as usual, sports, grilling and drinking with various family events built around that since it is a holiday weekend.

Is it OK to plant outside yet?  I have some herbs/veggies in pots indoors that I picked up at a farmer's market last weekend, but the Monday/Tuesday cold snap made me spooked to put them in the ground.

Edit: This website says the last frost in Grand Rapids is usually around May 16... so I think I'll wait a weekend or two.  My daughter would be pretty upset if she helped me plant things and then they all died.

have cold weather that will kill the plants and you would be forced to start over. I haven't had a garden in years but my dad never planted before Memorial Day and he grew up on a farm.

Of course if it's small enough and you plan ahead, you can cover the plants if it gets too cold.

taught me a lot about gardening.  He almost always had peas in the ground by April 1st, followed soon after by cabbage, broccoli, and/or cauliflower.  Most of the other stuff had to wait until early-to-mid May in the GR area, later yet the further north one lives.
