as long as he de-commits from MSU anywhere on the short list is A-OK with me. I've seen enough of the Gholston family for my own comfort as it stands.

I hadn't paid much attention until now. Why did we have no shot at the guy?
Why didn't OSU have a shot at him? He's Vernon's cousin, yes?
I think he's got a plane ticket to Florida already for this weekend. Can't blame a kid for taking that trip if offered, nor to USC (although UCLA would be a helluva nicer place to visit).
Is there some MSU/ghost of Nick Saban thing that has him looking at Alabama?

No. Gholston attended UM's Spring Game (well, he left before the actual game) with his biological father (who is conveniently a Michigan fan). He lives with Archie Collins, Southeastern's defensive coordinator and former Michigan State defensive back.

If my dad went to Michigan, and Michigan was recruiting me... would that be a recruiting violation? That's the situation here.

but I'm guessing he's just going on a few free trips. Cali, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee. There will be plenty of sunshine and cute college girls in light clothing. Did I mention it will be free?

Fans make this argument all the time, but I doubt it's true very often. These aren't vacations. Yeah, recruits get to go to a few parties. But the entire trip usually lasts no more than 48 hours, including travel time. And a lot of the time on campus is structured, spent meeting with coaches and advisors and getting the hard sell, and then being taken to watch some sporting event (usually basketball, sometimes hockey). If you don't have an interest in the school, a lot of aspects of the visit could become tiresome.
The more straightforward explanation in these cases is that the kid has some cold feet about his commitment and wants to see what else is out there before he signs.

well, for some it is a chance to see another part of the country. I know if i were a recruit i'd definitely take all 5 trips just to see different parts of the country like going down south or out west. not all 17-18 year old's are world travelers.

But the thing is, you don't really get to see that much of the country on the trip. Recruits typically fly in Friday night or Saturday morning, and fly back Sunday afternoon.

That was implied in the "go to parties" line. The NCAA actually is starting to crack down on some of this.

Presumably Gholston has access to the internet, so I'm guessing a mere lap dance from Miss Kardashian wouldn't produce much reaction beyond, "been there, seen that." She and Paris Hilton would pretty much have to go all-in if they wanted to impress recruits at this point.
