Gameday Ghosttown

The topic of ESPN picking the Oregon-ASU game over Michigan-MSU has already been discussed, but it does seem like Eugene is pretty sleepy if you check the video above. Des even comments on the lack of energy on campus. Is ASU-Oregon even a rivalry?
I remember for UTL that GameDay on Friday was almost constantly mobbed by M fans from morning until they closed up shop late in the afternoon, and the area around it looked like a warzone.
So, I have 2 questions:
(1) Does it seem odd how quiet campus is behind Des?
(2) I've heard dark rumblings that "GameDay doesn't want to go back to East Lansing after [insert reason here]," but I believe Basketball Gameday visited at least once in 2010, so is there any merit to this rumor?
Not that it matters too much, but it would have been a nice profile boost to have another national game spotlighting the M resurgence.
Enjoy the game tomorrow and Go Blue!

Gameday may want to go to East Lansing next weekend if MSU were to win against Michigan tomorrow.
Are there other games as big as next weekend's potential showdown between a top-5 Wisconsin team and the potential (but improbable) top-15 MSU?

I think there's potential for Gameday to be in Champaign if Michigan and Illinois stay unbeaten.
Ed: After looking at the schedule for Nov. 12th, Palo Alto dosent seem like such a bad destination
either...October 15th, 2011 at 7:31 AM ^
Probably not as this game b/c they already did the ND game and I hope there is a good chance they come back to AA for the ohio game. I don't think they would do 3 Michigan games. It would be cool but it would piss people off too.

And if you look at a map...Autzen Stadium isn't exactly attached to campus. You have to go over a river to get to the stadium.
For UTL, they filmed gameday on campus, which would be why there seemed to be a ton of people around the coverage. I doubt there would have been many students making the trek down to the Big House if filming had been there.

Not only over the river but through the woods. Then a quick stop at Grandma's house.

What's that you have in the basket, little girl?

I had a meeting in Madison the Thursday before Nebraska came to town and witnessed the Game Day dais being erected in the middle ot campus nowhere near the stadium! The students of course, flocked to the Game Day setup on Friday & Saturday mornig, then went over to Camp Randall. Just Sayin'

Is set up on campus, not at Autzen. The fan base out here just doesn't get riled up until closer to gametime. Plus, you have remember the time difference of 3 hours. College Football Live comes on at 12:30PM.

Are you Ronnie DoubleDay? Do you suffer from all 3 types of mental retardation. Did you see how busy Gameday was in 2007 for LLLLoyd's last game vs OSU? Get Real, Ronnie!

HOWEVA, this thread was in reference to the number of people seen behind Desmond today (the day before Gameday). Now, go back to 2007 when they filmed the stuff the day before Gameday and tell me how many people made the trek down to the Big House on a cold Friday afternoon just to see if they were filming.
The point is, if the set is in a common location, the people will stop by out of curiosity, plus you will just see the normal guy or gal walking by on their way to class. Most people (especially lazy, tired students), won't walk 15 minutes out of their way both directions just to see a tv set where they may or may not be live filming.

but it would have been a nice profile boost to have another national game spotlighting the M resurgenceDisagree. A Gameday visit is much more of a publicity boost for the home team. I'd rather have the national media snub Sparty (as they also did with the 12:00 start) and focus on us when we're at home.
October 14th, 2011 at 5:36 PM ^
yeah a noon game is better for the road team don't want a bunch of drunken spartan fans and a #:#0 game.
October 14th, 2011 at 7:45 PM ^
Bo would have never, and I mean NEVER, allowed Michigan to be scheduled for a #;#0 game. TV revenue be damned!

Ya I live in Eugene currently, and if you know where Autzen is located, it is not surprising that no one is there right now.
Its about a 20 minute walk from campus to where Autzen stadium is.
Also keep in mind that it will likely still be dark here in Oregon when gameday kicks off tomorrow @ 6am local time. Throw in the fact that kickoff isn't until 7pm PT and it will probably be dead tomorrow morning as well.
But trust me, they are rabid out here when it comes to the ducks. It annoys the hell out of me sometimes. I can't ever go out of the house in Michigan gear without getting comments from somebody, usually bringing up the 2007 game. Doesn't stop me from sporting my Wolverine pride though.

I live in Portland, but have Oregon season tickets (Michigan season ticket holder before I moved out here 4 years ago). I, too, sport my Michigan gear when in Eugene. We tailgate at the Child Development Center, aka the old armory. Stop by if you are around. We'll be the ones flying the Michigan flag over our RV.

The last time Gameday was at Oregon they had a pretty raucus crowd for the 10am airtime, even though they go live before sunrise. But I agree, Oregon-ASU is a lame matchup. They said on their Twitter account they were gonna go to Pullman for Wazzou's game this week until they blew a lead in their game last weeked. That would have been more interesting IMO :(

Any chance Gameday goes to Champaign for Michigan - Illinois on November 12 if they both keep winning? I haven't looked at the schedule yet to see what other games are that weekend.
October 14th, 2011 at 6:07 PM ^
I don't think Illinois has hosted Gameday, and the Illinois/Michigan games the past three years have been very memorable.
October 14th, 2011 at 6:46 PM ^
I'll take it to bank they go to Palo Alto that weekend. I know this gives Oregon 3 Gameday's this year (LSU in Dallas, ASU in Eugene), but Stanford will most likely be playing for an undefeated season and Oregon should only still have the one loss to LSU on the books for that game. A top 10 matchup for sure.
Best chance Michigan has to see college gameday again wil be the B1G championship game, as there is a 0% chance gameday returns for a second game in Ann Arbor in one season.
October 14th, 2011 at 7:51 PM ^
The game is not in Ann arbor it's in Illinois.
October 14th, 2011 at 9:32 PM ^
I guess I just left a bit out when I was talking about our schedule. I meant to include the fact that we only have two more road games this season after State, and they are Iowa and Illinois. Given that it is likely Gameday will be in Palo Alto when we play at Illinois, that leaves the Iowa game as the only other chance for Gameday, and I think we can all agree that is laughable, especially since that weekend, LSU is at Bama.
That said, since Gameday won't make return trips to campuses, we won't get them back in town for either Nebraska or Ohio at the end of the season.
October 14th, 2011 at 9:33 PM ^
He was referring to The Game as the second time Gameday would (but 100% won't) come back to AA.
October 14th, 2011 at 7:25 PM ^
has some weird atmosphere right now. fall break combined with people peacing to lansing.
will be interesting to see what happens with osu/thanksgiving

That reminds me of when BTN had their equivalent of College Gameday on a campus somewhere (Penn State, I think. And maybe they do this frequently? I don't know) and there were, on the day of the game, literally like five people in the background. There were people just walking by, waving at the camera.
October 14th, 2011 at 8:26 PM ^
Oregon's main rivals are Oregon State, USC and Washington. Oregon State, for obvious reasons; USC, just because everyone hates USC; Washington, this is a wierd one. I think it is just because Washington fans are just nasty. I can't really put my finger on the venom between Washington and Oregon. They just really don't like each other.
October 14th, 2011 at 10:13 PM ^
The MLS games between Portland and Seattle are pretty great, atmosphere-wise.
October 14th, 2011 at 11:34 PM ^
Isn't Washington-Oregon sort of like Michigan-OSU? I mean, not that it has the same level of history, but there's the neighboring state rivalry and all that.

more laid back. And the other things people have said above.
October 15th, 2011 at 1:50 AM ^
It's Oregon on a Friday morning. Everyone took off from work and school and is hiking and/or mountain biking. Some might also have taken the Prius up to the big city, Portland, which ironically has the highest amount of strip clubs per capita. Hippies love their titties!

It's been the whole week, and I didn't do any State trash talking. Well, here goes. Enjoy being lil bro sparty. once you lose in football, and restore the universe to its rightful place as ordained by Saint Michael Hart the first, you won't have football, basketball, hockey, or academics to lay claim to, and you'll be force to confront the fact that you went to a second tier public that no one outside of the frankly wretched state of Michigan knows or cares about. Enjoy working in a dying economy and teaching your children to embrace mediocrity. PEACE.
