Funny Note on Det Sports Talk
So Valenti and Foster bring up Meyer stealing Pittman from MSU. Mike says Mich and MSU are in trouble because Meyer is a recruiting monster. Now the topic is brought up by
1. MSU alum
2. MSU lost the recruit
3. MSU has had the better team for 4 years
and over the course of an hour I heard 15 Michigan callers, 0 MSU callers and when they added on the topic it became who will have the better record over the next 5 years Hoke or Meyer. I think when they brought it up the 3rd time Foster said throw Dantonio in there as well.
I know usual talk radio caveats apply to screening out normal calls and such , but I think it is interesting how little buzz MSU gets. I may have missed it but where was the Sparty outrage over losing a recruit to Ohio or not even being part of the discussion about the top team.

Funny how everyone is talking about Meyer against Michigan. We'll see next year, as so far there hasn't been a single commit to battle over yet. Plus Pittman was never going to MSU anyways and was only using them as a placeholder.

said it best, we knew pittman was going to osu after meyer was announced. if mich and msu fans dont respect meyer and what he can do you may be in for a suprise. but again we all thought we had a meyer in rr and looked how that turned out. mich will be just fine. respect meyer dont fear him.

I know Valenti talk is usually frowned upon here but I had the misfortune of listening for a bit during their Meyer bit today....Foster thinks that Standifer and UM parting ways was a result of Meyer and OSU. They know notihng about recruiting, or much else for that matter.
They were basically making Meyer and OSU out to be the New England Patriots of the B1G for the next decade.

They were basically making Meyer and OSU out to be the New England Patriots of the B1G for the next decade.Well to be fair to Valenti/Foster, pretty much everybody in the media has been treating Meyer/OSU like a done deal, that the Tressel years will be repeated again only with more National Titles
December 13th, 2011 at 9:08 PM ^
No one should be fair to those two...what callers or fanbase are they ever fair to? The MSU fanbase for Valenti and that's about it. The media telling everybody that Meyer and OSU are destined for multiple national championships is them shoving easy opinions to the majority of fans out there who pay attention to the mainstream media, those fans are simpletons.
Any diehard Michigan fan who knows anything can see what Hoke has done/is doing at UM, that Wisconsin isn't going anywhere, Nebraska is Nebraska, and even MSU has raised their bar. Would it kill those two guys to do a bit of prep and research and tell their listeners "UM and MSU fans" that OSU won't be the New England Patriots?? Of course it would, then they wouldn't be talking to the simpleton fans. They would be talking to a knowledgeable fanbase, and that just doesn't cut it on their show.

You're right, they definitely don't deserve the benefit of the doubt. I'm just saying that these two morons aren't the first, or the last unfortunately, to think that Urban Meyer is going to be Tressel all over again.
But I totally agree that these two are hacks who are setting it up so that they look so smart when talking to the dumb side of fans
December 13th, 2011 at 8:48 PM ^
I have a feeling that Michigan and tOSU's recruiting will come at the expense of Sparty
December 13th, 2011 at 11:02 PM ^
I mean, Urban Meyer's already take 1/3 of Michigan State's 4-star recruits.
But this won't be much of a problem because of Michigan State's ability to recruit nationally.
December 13th, 2011 at 8:48 PM ^
Mike Valenti is such a pussy.
December 13th, 2011 at 11:53 PM ^
Don't sully the good name of pussy like that.
December 13th, 2011 at 8:49 PM ^
I don't understand why everyone thinks all of a sudden recruiting will be dead for the rest of the B1G. Schutt is the only one that Meyer has gotten they Ohio wouldn't have gotten in the first place if they weren't in the crapper the entire offseason in the first place. And Schutt only ended up at Ohio because he missed the boat on ND, and PSU is a smoking pile right now. Ohio has, and always will, get good recruits. To what degree we have yet to see. Meyer will do well, but any better than Tressel even?
December 13th, 2011 at 8:51 PM ^
I don't understand why you guys continue to give this guy attention, it's pretty sad.
December 13th, 2011 at 9:01 PM ^
I am so glad I don't have to listen to them anymore and their poor excuse for a sports talk show.
December 13th, 2011 at 10:27 PM ^
I just don't see the appeal of sports talk radio as a whole, but I really don't see why people would let this guy troll them day in and day out.
December 13th, 2011 at 8:53 PM ^
Valenti is a one trick pony. He feigns outrage on the opposite side of conventional wisdom then waits for an uniformed caller to double down on said position. Michigan, Lions, and Tigers fans line up to change his mind which has happened precisely never. He comes off as Chicken Little which is unfortunate when he actually has a legitimate point, eg. Chris Paul.
He is a classic example of Howard Stern's mantra that you don't have to like him to listen to him. He annoys the hell out of me but I tune in more than I'd like to admit.
December 13th, 2011 at 9:26 PM ^
that is a very analytical description of you being a sucker
December 13th, 2011 at 9:54 PM ^
The only solice I have when I listen to the show is that I'm not as dumb as the callers. If I didn't believe this I would end up in the fetal position under a running shower every time I listened.
December 13th, 2011 at 10:19 PM ^
with a radio dipshit. And that's it.
But this isn't an uncommon phenomenon, as your Stern example illustrates. To each his own, my friend.
December 13th, 2011 at 8:55 PM ^
Wait, they don't get much buzz? It's very odd that there's two threads a day about them here then.
December 13th, 2011 at 8:59 PM ^
Terry Foster adds NOTHING. To anything. Except carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and shit into toilets.
Mike Valenti, while a total Sparty troll, is usually spot on and insightful about other sports and teams. I love to hate the guy.
December 13th, 2011 at 9:01 PM ^
I'm one of the few people that doesn't mind Valenti on this site. The man has one job: Attract viewers. He does it very well. Broadcasting and show-business is a field that is littered with once upon a time local celebrities so he has to always be interesting. He knows exactly how to get everyone fired up. And to his credit, he always, ALWAYS, admits that Michigan is the better overall program than MSU, but he doesn't hesitate to rub the last 4 years in. I would too if I were him.
He isn't supposed to be a journalist, but rather an entertainer. If he upsets someone, then I would suggest that person stops listening to him.
December 13th, 2011 at 9:33 PM ^
I listen to him, when I go up to AA and he reminds me a lot of the Cbus radio personalities. The ones that get the best ratings are always a little over the top.
December 13th, 2011 at 9:21 PM ^
Valenti & Foster caters to the average sports fan, in my opinion, by being the sort of entertainer that he is. If they really thought they could get serious ratings with a thoughtful, analytical show, then that's likely what CBS Radio would direct them to do. The popular opinion being fed to the masses by the pundits is that Urban Meyer is bringing the Florida magic to Ohio, and in turn, that's what they fed to their listeners today. I think Michigan fans tried to explain why they weren't terribly worried but were again dismissed as stuffy or arrogant for not politely stepping into the path of the Urban Train. That's exactly what they want on that show, it seems.
December 13th, 2011 at 10:09 PM ^
and would rather ask Michigan fans for their opinions so they can debate and ridicule them for their own enjoyment. They constantly deflect topics about MSU unless they have to discuss it because it's a hot topic. Valenti is a MSU grad and Foster graduated from CMU but falls in the same toilet as Valenti is in when it comes to Michigan. They believe their ratings stay highest when baiting Michigan fans to call in because MSU fans can't afford the dime.

Valenti is a troll. This thread should have been deleted as soon as it was put up.
December 13th, 2011 at 11:31 PM ^
Valenti is so bombastic and arrogant that he goads the not-so-informed Michigan fans into calling in just so they argue with him and try to prove him wrong, then he turns that around and is shocked that he never gets rational Michigan fans calling in. Yeah, that's because the well-informed and rational Michigan fans know that you're a Sparty slap posing as a legitimate journalist and want nothing to do with your "show".
I only listen for Lions/Tigers/Wings. As soon as CFB or Michigan is brought up I have to turn it off.
December 14th, 2011 at 1:14 AM ^
They are the result of no other competition in the Detroit sports radio market. Think of what would happen if they had to compete every day with Desmond and any other co-host on a different station.
I think I dislike their 3rd wheel/sidekick/Valenti ass kisser the most (Matt Dery). He went from rarely being heard to basically sounding like a Valenti clone. Be original and act like you know something about sports. At least Valenti can be coherent at times when he's not being a dick.
December 14th, 2011 at 9:37 AM ^
thank you! I have been thinking the exact same thing about matt derry. The guy knows absolutely nothing about college football and I feel like everytime he says anything he probably looks over at Mike to see if he approves and Mike will nod and smile (Derry creams his shorts) or Mike shakes his head in disapproval ( Derry leaves the studio and weeps uncontrolably)
December 14th, 2011 at 9:38 AM ^
Valenti is just scared that Meyer and Hoke are going to destroy his program's recruiting. The way I see it, a lot of MSU's recent success can be attributed to Rich Rodriguez's laissez faire attitude towards recruiting Michigan kids. Now that Hoke is putting an emphasis on recruiting Michigan, MSU is going to have to rely on their "national" recruiting (Ohio), and Meyer isn't going to let that happen. So he's scared.
He's not going to admit that, of course. And he's projecting his fears onto Michigan as well, as if the two programs deal with the same problems. He'll always include Michigan in the discussion to improve his ratings and create a stupid discussion.
What the hell is a Walmart Wolverine anyways? Are they actually surprised that the winningest program in the country has fans that didn't attend the school? Why don't any of the stupid callers make that point?
