To Frozen Four Attendees

Submitted by Mr. Robot on

For any of you lucky enough to be attending the Frozen Four, I would first of all like to express my extreme envy towards you. I am sure you will help make the team feel at home.

That said, I had a few chant suggestions to use against North Dakota:

1. "Racist Mascot" - North Dakota has been under pressure for a long time to change their mascot name, and they are suppose to do it this summer, but that's been said before. The Sioux don't like it, and neither should we.

2. "Nazi boosters" - For those of you who don't know, North Dakota has perhaps the fanciest hockey arena in the world. It was paid for by a former player who made it big in Vegas who was also very racist and actually had a party for Hitler's birthday once. The fact the university accepted his donation is a large reason the Sioux stopped being okay with them using their name, and the guy threatened to retract his donation when the university contemplated changing their name. The design intentionally incorporates a lot of their current logos to make it hard to change the mascot, and the arena itself is actually legally owned by the guy's family and rented to the university for $1/year so they could, in theory, take the place back if/when the school changes its mascot.

Too harsh? Maybe, but if this were at Yost it'd happen, so no reason not to pull all the stops for a national championship.

I couldn't come up with much of anything clever for Minnesota-Duluth, and Notre Dame we already have plenty for.

Hope everyone going has fun and doesn't come home disappointed. Go Blue!

Sadly I haven't heard that yet this year. We didn't chant that at BGSU after we beat them at Yost, and clearly it didn't apply to any of the teams that we played at the Joe. Following both wins in St. Louis there was too much tension then excitement to even berate the other team. I imagine it will be the same way in St. Paul no matter what the result is.

it did happen; the student section would not let us down.  ...And trust me, they, bgsu, deserve it.  I still blame their AD for screwing us over the first year we should have gone to the dance.  as the story goes, the winner of the consolation game was supposed to get the last invite that team was us over BGSU.  the next day when the brackets came out, the writers said, 'Where's Michigan?'  the butthead AD claimed ignorance...

they deserve every derision they get.

As someone stated, "Sioux" is an exonym with disputed roots. The Sioux view it as derogatory. The "Sioux" prefer to be called "Lakota."

Thus, "racist mascot" may be more appropriate for the "Fighting Sioux" than any other mascot in the NCAA.

But that wasn't really the point. I can't believe so many knowledgable people have missed the obvious error in the post and thread multiple times....

But as far as I know, that's been tried before and its been delayed, reconsidered, etc. THey have a website about retiring the logo and name, and as far as I can tell they haven't even come up with a new name and logo yet, and they're suppose to make the changeover in the middle of August. I'm betting it gets pushed back again and this gets brought out longer.

Even if they do change it though, they are still the Fighting Souix on Thursday and their arena's builder and namesake is still a crazy Nazi crackpot, so both ideas apply.

My housemate, for some reason due to his family being from the area or his parents going there, is a UND fan. He said he wants to root for them on Thursday, but I think he's just trolling.

Anyway, he told me they are going to change their name to the "Flickertails". Your guess is as good as mine as to what the eff that means.

The ND Board of Higher Education actually told them to change and adopt a new nickname so the university was all set to do that. The latest I heard was that the state legislature had voted to block the school changing it's nickname and logo and the governor was all set to sign it.

I usually find Nazi references to be in bad taste... unless the person in question is admittedly a big fan of the Nazis.

Start throwing birthday parties for the Fuhrer, and you've earned way, way more than some hockey chants.  But for now, some hockey chants will have to do.

I'll be there in the Michigan section. I'm sure racist mascot will be thrown out there, not how happy the Xcel Center folks will be about us chanting about nazis.

Also, to anyone planning on bringing in a cowbell. Be careful. Three years back in Denver the ushers came by and tried to confiscate the cowbell but we passed it around and hid it. And in St. Louis during the UNO game they confiscated the cowbell in the first row after the first time it was struck. In the CC game a band member had a cowbell and they let them play that seeing as how it was a musical instrument. It might make sense to try to do that again.

Depending on the weather we may be trying to go to Minneapolis for the Thursday and Saturday games and fly back to Detroit for Tigers opening day. Wouldn't that just be a sick weekend?

You're from section 17? Do you know me and if so do you have space in your car? My friend who went with me to STL couldn't make it, and everyone else backed out so right now I'm planning on going by myself unless something better comes up :/

/awkward but less awkward than driving 10 hours by myself and going to the game alone

I probably know you... I usually had the flags at (over) my feet in section 17 and went to the CC game in STL (we watched the UNO game on tv in AA).  Anyway we have two spots in my car for the trip to St. Paul and we were planning on leaving Wed afternoon (staying overnight in Madison) so we could see both games on Thurs.

For anybody still interested, I know the AD was still selling tickets as of this afternoon, I got my call from them around noon CST.  There might be a few left.

"Saaaaffffttteyyyyy Schoooooooooool"

Always frustraites fans in my opinion.

Also, my brother had a roomate in college from North Dakota, and it always frustaited him that all people would ever ask him was "Is that the one with mount rushmore more?"  "No" "O, ok"

So I would try

"Where's Mount Rushmore" Clap clap clapclapclap

Its kind of a sensitive topic to them

John U. Bacon, author of Bo's Lasting Lessons, teaches a lesson on this topic in his history of college athletics class.  For a mascot named after a group, 3 rules should be followed for it to be considered acceptable.

1. The name must be historically accurate (fail here, see below)

2. The name must be supported by the group in question, like how the Seminoles approve/encourage Florida State, as far as issuing scholarships (fail here again, see below)

3. Sorry guys, but I can't remember this one but if people really want to know it I can dig up my old class notes.

... that guy was a fracking nut job.  God bless this country that absolute wack jobs can be so successful in business, lest they be encouraged to enter the political arena and do even more damage (a la Hitler, himself... if only he were a better artist.).

I condone any chant that refers to this team's sordid past.   They should be ashamed that the stadium in which they celebrate was built using the money of a Nazi.

Flickertails was NDs previous mascot before they changed to the fighting Sioux around 1930. There was immediate objection from some indians and this has continued to be a contentious issue ever since.  Although some branches of the sioux have endorsed the name, it certainly seems pretty racist considering the "fighting".

If we end up playing the other ND, we could use the same chant as many of us of Irish heritage would take offense to ND's racist mascot/moniker.

A flickertail is a rodent similar to a prairie dog or a ground squirrel.  ND changed their name to the Fighting Sioux when ND State became the Bison.  ND's president reasoned that the Sioux were good at exterminating Bison, thus they became the Fighting Sioux.  Nevermind that it was white men who exterminated bison while the indians were dependent on the herds.

(I was doing some research last night, and yes I am very pumped about going to the game.)

I'll be there from Section 16.  I'll have my cowbell as well...ushers at Penn St, Ohio St, ND, MSU, Breslin have all tried to confiscate it, but to no avail.  I'll be playing loud and proud, go blue!  Where are most students/band/team staying and going out Thursday night?
