Friday POSBANG - Crush the Kinnick curse

Submitted by M_Born M_Believer on September 30th, 2022 at 7:42 AM

Its Friday!  Its POSBANG time!  Tell us your biggest superstition when it comes to Michigan football if you have one.

Quick cool story bro here:

My son blew out his ACL and tore his meniscus 3 weeks ago at football practice.  Had surgery 2 weeks ago and made it back to watch his team last night.  He was at the gate in his wheelchair waiting for his team.  Usually when they walk up to the field they come up in 2 columns arms locked, but when they saw my son sitting there waiting for them, spontaneously they broke formation and lined up in single file and each teammate gave him a welcome back bro hug/fist bump, low five.

This is what team sports is all about.  Such team chemistry is what makes it so special.

GO BLUE!  BEAT IOWA!

Personally, I do not believe in curses, jinxs, or any of that crap.  Just go out and play like you can and everything else will take care of itself.

But one has to look at Iowa's past results and take it into consideration what exactly is going on there that get that team to repeatedly drag Top 5 teams to play in a rock fight?

Even the Athletic is calling it a curse.

“What I remember more than anything is starting to say, ‘Hey, man, I think I might actually believe in magic,’” said Jake Butt, a Big Ten Network analyst and star tight end for that Michigan team. “That 2016 game, from a talent standpoint, we had so much more talent than Iowa that year. It was a game we should have won.

“They take on this identity somehow when they’re playing top teams there. It’s the fans, it’s Kirk Ferentz, it’s the players. When you go into that stadium, there’s a belief that they have that’s almost supernatural.”

* * *

Jim Harbaugh made a similar point this week when he referred to Kinnick Stadium as a “place where top-five teams go to die.” Harbaugh would know: He was the quarterback of a No. 2 Michigan team that lost 12-10 to the Hawkeyes in 1985 and the coach of a No. 2 Michigan team that lost by almost the same margin 31 years later. Now he’s the coach of a Michigan team that is ranked No. 4 and trying to get its first win in Iowa City since 2005.

Time to tell off Jobu and get the job done.

My second son told us a year ago he was going to make the freshman soccer team at our high school, the largest high school in the state. I simply didn’t believe him in my heart, but I didn’t want to crush his spirit.  He started travel soccer much later than his peer group, and the skill gap was obvious. He committed to juggling/working on his soccer skills one hour every day for a full year. He made the team! He was the last kid off the bench, but he works his butt off and has earned the respect of his teammates with his dedication. THE TEAM finished the season undefeated.

Go Blue, beat the Hawkeyes!

Bang me at 30,000 ft!  Heading home from the west coast on the first flight out.  I can’t handle the red eye flights.

Hopeful that JJ and the receivers will be flying up and down the field tomorrow

THE TEAM, THE TEAM, THE TEAM!

I wish your son a complete and speedy recovery.

Iowa had some good teams in the past so there isn't much of a curse.  Sometimes you just don't play your best game.  If Michigan shows up (key injuries do not loom large at key moments) it should be a good day.

I discussed superstitions with some of my more ancient Michigan alumni (alumnus?) friends.  We have moved past t-shirts, sweatshirts, socks, foods (tried with and without blue corn chips (to mix with maize corn chips)), beers, mugs to no avail.  However, thanks to the MSU "curse" there are no blue corn chips in the house at this time.

I don't know if there's a Kinnick Curse or not, but this isn't an example of anything but a dumb play. The man trips and falls. He's down, can't get back up, and the play is over, period. Nothing good can come from hitting him - so of course, Bush hit him. What was an Iowa screw-up becomes a personal foul, 1st down, and Devin gets tossed.

Maybe that's the Kinnick Curse: it makes Iowa's opponents do stupid things.

This is a great example of my biased memory.  I don't recall that camera angle/view during the game.  That looks like a terrible hit and worthy of a penalty.

How I remember it from the other camera angle.  Bush sees the ball come loose and tries to dive OVER the punter to get to the loose ball.  Bush wasn't trying to hit the punter, but the punter tried to get up and moved into Bush's dive for a loose ball.

Punter didn't trip.  That move was designed to draw a penalty.  He pulled stunts on a regular basis.  More actor than punter.

I never start with a superstition, but once something goes bad, I immediately assume it is a piece of clothing I am wearing.  I typically run out of T-shirts by the end of the season and I still haven't dusted off the nike hoodie I got before the 2020 season (I might need to burn that one).

I don't have any superstitions.  But I did watch the MD game in my living room, rather than the den over my garage where I watched the previous three games.  And sometimes, if I move to a different sitting position or seat on the couch, the team will screw up some plays.  And I don't believe it matters one iota, but I do try not to exhale while looking at Michigan on the field.

Yeah, so I don't believe in superstitions, they are for fools...
