Free WIFI Saturday at Michigan Stadium
This in my email today:
During the final four home games, Michigan Athletics will be testing WiFi coverage in certain locations of Michigan Stadium. Based on your seat location for Michigan vs. Minnesota on Saturday at 3:30 p.m., you will be able to receive free WiFi during the game.
Michigan Athletics certainly recognizes the need to continue to enhance the in-stadium experience at Michigan Stadium, and a powerful enhancement will be the opportunity to receive WiFi. Please understand that this is simply a test and service may be sporadic depending on your seat location.
Seat locations in section 1 and 44 should expect to receive better service than those located in section 2 and 43 of Michigan Stadium. Again, please understand that this is a test in order to better understand the WiFi experience moving forward at Michigan Stadium.
For the final four home games, you will be able to access WiFi by simply connecting to the WiFi network titled MWiFi. Once selected, you will be prompted to enter your email address and agree to the terms and conditions.
During the week of October 7, we hope you will be willing to participate in a short survey in order for you to better provide your experience regarding the MWiFi service for your seat location. We hope you enjoy the game on Saturday as well as the opportunity to be one of the select fans to test WiFi at Michigan Stadium.
I sit in section 1 so this will be interesting. I have Verizon, and as we all know, is far from good while at the stadium.

but I've never been able to text during games, so I can NEVER win tickets to the next game!
However ... why is there a 7 second delay in receiving the radio call while in the stadium. Is that because Frank Beckman may let go with a "What THE FUCK was that call ?" C'mon ... I use to love listening to the game while at the stadium ... its great for stats and also injury updates. Fuck the WIFI and give me some real time radio!
Go BLue!

Surprised they didn't go full-bore and put in a temporary Starbucks in the concourses next to these particular sections.
Never in my life would I have thought my "game experience" would necessitate wifi. Simply absurd.

For those whose gamedays must include work-related tasks, please feel free to visit the MGoBusiness Center conveniently located on the Michigan Stadium concourse near the entrance to Section 6. The MGoBusiness Center will open 30 minutes before kickoff and close at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Free WiFi is available, as are cost-per-page laser printers and copy machines. A coffee bar with light concessions will be open for your convenience. Television monitors will broadcast the game, so you'll never miss a minute of the action!

I thought Tim Hortons is the official coffee provider at the Stadium. At least they use their cups.

Your gameday experience may not necessitate wifi, but for quite a few fans having that option available would be a nice enhancement to their gameday experience. Since one of the prevailing theories behind declining attendance is the improved home theater experience that includes access to the internet, it makes sense to try and match that in the stadium. Not absurd in the least.

The "home theater experience" argument has much more to do with a gigantic TV and concessions that don't cost an arm and a leg than it does internet access.
Really, name any legitimate reason going to a football game requires WiFi. And, no, "I want to be able to text" is not an acceptable answer.

It doesn't require. I never said "require". I said "enhance". And there's plenty of reasons why having wifi available would enhance the gameday experience for a lot of people.
I mean, wifi/cell phone data isn't necessary for a non-gameday experience either - somehow we surived before cell phones. But it's nice to have if you want to use it. And plenty of people like using it during games if they can.

I'm more inclined to go to a blowout game against a MAC or FCS opponent if I can keep up with the happenings across the college football world when there are good games on at the same time.

experience has much more to do with people staying home.

With how infrequently they scroll scores of other games across the scoreboard, I always find myself wondering what the score of a big game is during a TV timeout or halftime. Since my 4G signal usually blows donkey balls, potentially having Wi-Fi for that endeavor would be very nice. Not necessary, but nice.

I'd be surprised if the Dave Brandon's Superlaser isn't already fully operational. Next thing you know it's goodbye Alderaan.

I was in the stadium 2 years ago with a friend in a wheelchair who developed breathing problems at the very end of the UTL 1 game. I could not reach family sitting elsewhere or anyone in the celebration chaos by phone. We finally made it out to the concourse and ran into an emt group who expedited us to First Aid. Luckily they had the wherewithal to help and most people had not left the stadium. It was very scary but ended well!
