Shouldn't be a problem since African American guys from major urban centers are just lining up to go to corn country to play for a program with no history, right?

That's a lot of money down the drain.

Then why take the job?

Nebraska isn’t Duke. It doesn’t recruit itself. You’re going to have to recruit. A lot. Nebraska isn’t a job that’s even in the top half of its own conference. UM, MSU, Wisconsin, Maryland, Purdue, IU, and OSU are more prestigious jobs. Illinois arguably is too, as it at least has history of success, and Minnesota to some degree. So you’re not getting top players who are lining up to go out to bumfuck middle of nowhere, Nebraska, to go play basketball at a school with no history of success, nor has a fanbase that even cares for basketball.

If that’s your attitude, then fine. But Nebraska possibly just wasted a ton of money to go get a guy who hates doing a major component of what all college coaches have to do to be successful.

We must remember that there is a difference between hating an activity and being bad at it.  Just because he hates it, does not mean he will be bad at it.  Many of us probably have aspects of our job we dislike and are still quite good at.

I don't see this as a good move by Nebraska. This is the biggest "name" hire they could hope to make,  but I don't see him winning a lot of games or sticking around long. Hoiberg has flat out said he doesn't like recruiting, and there's not a huge talent pool in state to draw from. Not to mention that Michigan, MSU, and Purdue are there to dominate the conference. I also don't see Adidas or Nike sending out the Brinks truck to get kids to go to Lincoln for brand exposure.

Hoiberg seems by far the best coach they could hope for, and is almost certainly an upgrade over Miles. Seven years seems like a really long contract, but Hoiberg definitely had the advantage in that contract negotiation.

Maybe he's the best NAME coach they could hope for, but for a guy who professes not to like recruiting going to a program that I believe has NEVER won an NCAA tournament game it's pretty clearly not the best coach they could have hired.

It's a typical hire than "wins" the news cycle, but flames out in a few years when nobody notices anymore. In the meantime, guys like Chris Beard (who was a no-name as recently as 18 months ago) work their ass off and go to the Final Four.

There are more good coaches out there and any of us could possibly know about plying their trade and working on their craft. Most athletic directors, at all levels, have little idea how to find and identify coaching talent that doesn't have an extensive track record. Therefore they fall back on recommendations from people in the business or name-brand coaches.

Let’s make hot takes about a guy off one tweet and unequivocally summarize why that tweet validates him as a bad hire. Lmao, the idea that a guy who has won games in college at a high level is not a good coach is oddly familiar.

So bloody what he said he hates recruiting—does t mean he won’t do it. He did t say he doesn’t like players—he just doesn’t like the BS. Beilein seems to show some animosity recruiting, too, just looking at his policies—won’t offer guys who don’t visit, even the most elite. Beilein is clean because he won’t play the games with recruits that make it about the money, etc.

Honestly, who loves to go around kissing the asses of teenagers—especially the most athletically gifted ones who you have to fight for attention with?

I didn't say he was a "bad" hire. I said he wasn't the BEST hire.

There are plenty of coaches who actually like the competition involved in recruiting and dealing with young people and their families. Considering it's the most important aspect of his job, I would think not hating recruiting would be a prerequisite for being really good at it.

I didn't follow the hiring process. Was anyone else even interviewed? Or did they just zero in on Hoiberg once he expressed an interest?

Big Ten is going to turn into the ACC except with more depth

Michigan, MSU, Purdue, Iowa, and Ohio State are going to be even better next year. Michigan and MSU will have the talent to be #1 and #2 in the nation

We seen Illinois and Rutgers make strides this season. Hoiberg will turn Nebraska into a good program. Wisconsin is always tough. I doubt Archie lets Indiana slide further down.

I wish him well.  I’m a bulls fan and upper management continues to roster crap teams and crap talent and then all the coaches get the boot.

The Bulls are so poorly managed by GarPax, it makes me sick to watch—so I haven’t. They don’t have a solid plan—and they pray that Dunn works out at PG?

Getting Porter seems like a good move, but no one on the roster has shown themselves To definitely develop into a perennially All Star.

They better hope they have a chance at Ja Morant, Zion, or Barrett. No other college baller in the draft is gonna change the current blah trajectory. Top 3 or they’re just gonna draft another bit player.  Can Zion shoot? Does he need to? Most of his hype seems to be off his post game, which doesn’t seem like it’ll work as much in pro game against taller (and they’re all taller than Zion) 4 and 5s.
