As a Raider fan I like Gruden a lot. He was the only coach since...who knows when to actually put his own stamp on the team instead of meekly submitting to Al Davis' whims, and the team's one good run in the last 25 years was all his doing. On the other hand, a college head coach has a very different set of responsibilities from an NFL head coach, and Gruden has only been a position coach at the college level. I think he'd be a bigger risk than Patterson or Whittingham or maybe even Hoke.

I like the thought of gruden getting denard more polished, and even though we would unnecessarily stockpile qbs in every class, getting gruden would definitely pump me up for next year.

And after 5 or 6 years in the college game, spending night after night in motels and airplanes chasing down 18-yr-old recruits in small towns in Mississippi and Ohio and Texas, dealing with whiny alumni wondering why you haven't beaten MSU or OSU or PSU or Wisky, John Gruden, who has spent his entire fucking career in the NFL, will say screw this shit and bolt to Cleveland or Carolina or Pittsburgh or San Diego or wherever the nearest vacant job is. You Gruden fans are all delusional.

I'm totally on the Gary Patterson bandwagon right now.  After watching the Rose Bowl, he can make use of Denard as QB and consistantly has good defense.  Plus he is from a smaller school, so understands the importance of regional recruiting, which seems important to many people, even though he doesn't have midwest ties.

Coaching in college?  Recruiting?  Utilizing a spread-option offense?  Building a solid defense from raw materials?

A few years ago I might have said "he could be our Pete Carroll," but look how that turned out. He could also be our Charlie Weis or Bill Callahan.

We should be looking at existing HCs and DCs, not a self-promoter refugee from the NFL.

Relax. Gruden is a solid coach. A good motivator. And he knows how to identify NFL talent. These qualities give him a chance to be a good college recruiter. His assistants will be doing most of the recruiting, anyway, fwiw. Gruden will be called into the living room to close the deal.

Patterson get the job. He said today Michigan is a great school yada yada.. but he has not been contacted yet, he will cross that bridge when he comes to it. Sounds like he is open to the idea...why on earth would he not receive even a phone call unless Brandon has made his choice and is going to shove it down our throats.

Sooo afraid right now.
