Finally, no more "No, but..."

Submitted by MgoBlueprint on June 9th, 2020 at 4:54 PM

I wear Michigan gear pretty often. So after an exchange of "Go Blue", I would be asked "Did/Do you go to Michigan"

For the last 16 years, the answer has been...

"No, But..."

'I've been a fan since I was 5 years old'

'I've been a fan since the fab five days'

'Michigan didn't have varsity lacrosse when I was coming out of high school'

'I've had season tickets for the past few years'

I can finally say "YES". I was admitted to Taubman's M.U.R.P. with a chance for a dual degree at Ross next year.

I honestly did not think I think this could happen to me. It still hasn't sunk it yet. This has literally been a dream of mine for the last 29 years. It's a dream that I gave up on years ago. Then everything started falling into place a month or so ago.

This sounds like a cheesy Disney movie. But never give up.

congrats! Fellow taubman alum here, though it was just MUP when I was around. Is this a real estate development track with the business dual?

I once had a coworker that was an MSU fan that was obsessed with pointing out that "most Michigan fans didn't go to UofM."  He would then use that as a jumping board for why MSU was better than UofM, because it has more true fans.

He didn't have the self-awareness to realize the hypocrisy in that his degree was from WMU.

He didn't have the intelligence to realize that most MSU fans didn't go to MSU either.  Should 5 year old's not have a favorite team?  They didn't go to MSU.  Having lots of fans that didn't go there is a badge of honor as it proves your school is awesome.

The MGoGirlfriend has never been able to figure out why "Yeah, but you didn't go to Michigan" was supposed to be an insult. Her rationale is:

If you didn't go to college, and therefore you have no allegiance to any school, you can choose to root for any university you want.

And of all the schools to root for, you chose Michigan.

So, how in the hell is that supposed to be insulting?

I’m a bit embarrassed that I had to google to find out that MURP is master’s in urban and regional planning.   Now that I’ve looked it up, it sounds like a great program.   Congratulations. Have you picked a focus area?

Congratulations from a fellow Taubman alum and former alumni board member.  Back in 2000, when learning of admittance, I had very similar emotions as a lifelong Michigan fan who attended undergrad elsewhere. Enjoy your time on north campus and hopefully our paths cross ways at an alumni/student function.

Congrats!  I’m sure you’ll be a worthy addition to the alumni base.

Also, fuck the Sparties who act as fan police.  If you want to be a Michigan fan, be a Michigan fan.  The “Walmart Wolverine” trope is so absurdly elitist, and it’s ironic that Spartans use it when they accuse us of being elitist

The Sparty fan policy were only VERY annoying a few years ago with their, “and haven’t we won 7 out of the last 8 years or something like that?”  The Sparties love to conveniently choose timelines that fit their narrative.

Haven’t had a chance to use, “haven’t we won 3 out of the last 4 years or something like that?”  Probably won’t as that’s some Sparty weak sauce.  They’ve been real quiet since last season’s game.  I wonder why? ? (44-10)

"A month or so ago"? Wow, things happen fast these days. Big congrats.

My personal "No, but ..." is pretty gratifying: "No, but my daughter did".

Hey Congratulations!  I think it's awesome that you truly appreciate what a great opportunity you've got.  Too many people take it for granted.  I wish you the best!

Congratulations.  That first step on campus to go to a class is pretty special.  I did it twice with a 7-year gap in between.

Combined, I had student tickets for 11 seasons as I enjoy the classroom.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

I get that too. I was born and raised in Ann Arbor, grew up with both parents working at UM, a house within earshot of the announcer during games, went to high school at Pioneer across the street from the Big House, took an extra class at UM after graduating from another college, and worked part time at UM for a year or so. And people will still look at me and say “well you never graduated from UM so why do you root for their teams”. Get fucked bud, is what I say. Go blue

Cominayeahaaaaaaa! GO BLUE!

I still have a bit of regret not going after being accepted. The out of state cost scared me at 18 years old.

Good on ya. I for I never really understood this line of reasoning, I didn’t play for the Leafs, still a fan. I didn’t go to Syracuse, still a fan. Was not ever a member of Penn St volleyball, still a fan. I watched AC in the Rose Bowl back in the day, loved the winged helmet. Been watching ever since. Am I less of a fan? Not as real, not allowed to love Michigan football? Walmart seems more of a statement of the low level thinking then much else. IMO

I’m  usually stoic and unaffected by these posts. But this one got me in the  feels.  I don’t know you but this felt extremely uplifting for me to read.  I received my undergraduate degrees from M in 1996 and have been beyond fortunate in my life and career thereafter.   But I beam with pride every minute of the day because of my M experience and degrees. It sounds like you’re on your way to a similar experience.   A hearty congrats to you.  It’s an incredible feeling. Enjoy!
