Feldman's Article: Wake Forest scandal didn’t get same attention from NCAA as Michigan investigation. Why?
The Bruce Feldman article that was mentioned on the Rich Eisen show yesterday has been published:
Wake Forest scandal didn’t get same attention from NCAA as Michigan investigation. Why?
- Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson had game plans distributed by Tommy Elrod, a former Wake player & coach who was their radio broadcaster at the time.
- NCAA did nothing for 3 years after being notified in 2014.
- Inside ‘WakeyLeaks,’ the scandal that should have rocked college football

Just found this after looking up Wakey Leaks...
Georgia coach Shane Beamer fined for involvement in WakeyLeaks scandal - NBC Sports
Georgia announced on Thursday that special teams coach Shane Beamer was fined $25,000 and reprimanded for his involvement in the incident while he was an assistant under his father at Virginia Tech back in 2014.
Mind you - this is for using a STOLEN GAME PLAN! And to my knowledge no NCAA action or continuing impact on his career as he is now the HC at South Carolina.

The B1G’s leadership is looking more and more foolish the longer time goes on.
November 9th, 2023 at 10:20 AM ^
you're a one trick pony - but i like it
November 9th, 2023 at 9:45 AM ^
Why, you ask? Michigan+Harbaugh vs. Wake Forest. That's why.
November 9th, 2023 at 9:58 AM ^
I really don't know of another program that would get such widespread enthusiasm for punishment. Tennessee? But the SEC knows mudslinging only hurts everyone. Texas? Duke basketball? Its obviously like 90% of this is people just wanting to take an opportunity to hammer Michigan
November 9th, 2023 at 10:04 AM ^
I know it's been discussed before, but I just can't see the SEC being so fundamentally stupid to put up with this kind of shiite; wtf B1G
November 9th, 2023 at 10:11 AM ^
Thats the thing. The SEC hates Tennessee, but the SEC is not stupid enough to start airing all their grievances in public because they know thats lose-lose. The Big Ten appears to be too dumb and naive to see this is going to end poorly for everyone. There is no leadership in this conference right now.
November 9th, 2023 at 11:17 AM ^
I wouldn't say dumb and naive. More like arrogant and proud. But also dumb. Likely naive. I hate this all.
November 9th, 2023 at 10:12 AM ^
I'm pretty sure that Notre Dame would.
November 9th, 2023 at 11:32 AM ^
@Derek,
Notre Dame looks pretty damn smart right now, never joining the B1G despite the overtures - as well as the apparent geographic (when it mattered) and academic fit.
Maybe it never smelled quite right with them. OSU was crowned the flagship program once UM and PSU were dong punching themselves over the past 2 decades, and the financial and resource investment into keeping OSU as the SEC of the north was a necessity for a conference of mid contenders. MSU was never going to break through to elite, and is a mid regional program.
November 9th, 2023 at 11:57 AM ^
The downside of that for Notre Dame is that they basically have to go undefeated to make the playoff, bc they have no conference championship. Maybe they get in with one loss after it expands, but there will be conference teams who get in with 2 losses.
November 9th, 2023 at 2:22 PM ^
I think starting next year, they will get in virtually every year. Not deservedly, but it will happen.
November 9th, 2023 at 11:06 AM ^
USC, I think.
November 9th, 2023 at 10:33 AM ^
Yep. This is 100% because Harbaugh and Michigan.
November 9th, 2023 at 10:55 AM ^
Why, you ask? Michigan+Harbaugh vs. Wake Forest. That's why.
It's also because it was Ohio St getting their asses kicked, not Wake Forest
November 9th, 2023 at 9:45 AM ^
I’m sure there were 3-9 reasons why they didn’t
November 9th, 2023 at 9:50 AM ^
Or is it more of the pitchfork carrying 45-23 & 42-27 reasons.
November 9th, 2023 at 9:58 AM ^
Curious about this reply... WF was the victim of the leaks, right? I get it if WF had all of their opponents game plans and still finished 3-9.
Maybe it didn't get the attention because the leak was an inside job to sabotage?
November 9th, 2023 at 10:18 AM ^
Yup, this is it.
That said, why not call attention to Louisville, Army, VT, and whichever other schools gladly took that information to beat (literally) WF? Conference foes probably multiple times, it seems. I guess the ACC doesn't have a sportsmanship rule :P
November 9th, 2023 at 11:39 AM ^
Read clarification below. Never mind. Violins on television.
November 9th, 2023 at 9:47 AM ^
It's just one story...but we are starting to stack more and more and more items that show this is totally nothing. I say that as someone who was super paranoid about this to start....
November 9th, 2023 at 9:59 AM ^
My only real fear at this point is the Big Ten does something reactionary that hurts this season. Nothing is happening long term, but Pettiti is a moron and I worry about what he's going to try to do.
November 9th, 2023 at 10:15 AM ^
If he does, the reaction from UM may not be just short term but in the long term as well. I see UM leaving B1G in the long term and this will be a key reason if not the only reason.
November 9th, 2023 at 11:34 AM ^
Michigan is not leaving the Big Ten. But Michigan may make life very uncomfortable for the administration and certain other schools in the league for several years.
November 9th, 2023 at 10:31 AM ^
If the B1G was going to do that, they would have had to have done it last week after the "phone call" and the meeting with Santa.
The pendulum has swung too much in our favor this past week that if they did something right now with where the story stands, they will not be able to withstand the fire and fury. If they wanted to something "bold" the chance to do that has passed.
November 9th, 2023 at 9:48 AM ^
This is actually a pretty stupid article. It really doesn’t say anything.
November 9th, 2023 at 9:55 AM ^
Yeah this piece was disappointingly short with little new info. Still better than Feldman's stupid "polling coaches on how bad Harbaugh makes them look" crap
November 9th, 2023 at 9:57 AM ^
right? if you're going to ask the question 'why?' then answer it please.
November 9th, 2023 at 9:49 AM ^
He had me at "WakeyLeaks."
November 9th, 2023 at 9:49 AM ^
It clearly didnt do WF any good. I guess thats more evidence that it doesn't make you a better team because you know your opponents signs?
Every hater is on this hype train because its Michigan, and 99% of us here know that. We also know ncaa and msm pick and choose what they want to hammer everyone with. It's nothing new.
November 9th, 2023 at 9:51 AM ^
Wake's entire gameplans were leaked by a bitter ex-coach. They were the victims, not perpetrators.
November 9th, 2023 at 10:38 AM ^
My point was nobody even talked about this before because it was not Michigan. They get clicks and views. Not sure why all the negs since most everyone here has already agreed with that. Wow...
November 9th, 2023 at 9:51 AM ^
Huh? It was Wake Forest’s game plans that were leaked. It’s actually a much worse situation than anything Michigan is accused of.
November 9th, 2023 at 10:09 AM ^
...tell me you didn't read the article without actually saying you couldn't be bothered
November 9th, 2023 at 9:49 AM ^
I hope hope hope at least one of these teams were in the B1G, and was demanding for Harbaugh’s suspension.
November 9th, 2023 at 9:49 AM ^
Not super helpful to the narrative given that Feldman doesn't check Clawson equating the situations when what happened to WF is much worse than sign stealing.
November 9th, 2023 at 10:01 AM ^
I think that's the point. WF was much more badly victimized than any of Michigan's opponents during the time that CS was employed at Michigan. And yet the NCAA ignored it. From the perspective of impact and game integrity, it's nothing.
November 9th, 2023 at 10:20 AM ^
My point is that the article does a poor job that what Michigan is accused of doing is "nothing." The article explicitly equates the situations-- "Like most coaches, Clawson has followed the Michigan storyline, and can empathize with their opponents. Some of it felt very familiar."--when we all know that sign stealing is common. Anything about what happened to WF being worse is, at best, implied.
November 9th, 2023 at 9:50 AM ^
Ugh, Clawson went to the “health and well-being” line. I’ve still yet to hear anybody explain why there’s some added danger in a play if the opposition knows what’s coming. They’re running faster? I can’t think of anything else, but that feels like a pretty weak correlation to me.
November 9th, 2023 at 10:05 AM ^
If it’s a health and safety issue, why have we not instituted radio helmets a long time ago? Why do we not have wristbands in place? Why are these Big Ten coaches only slamming the table and wanting Harbaugh‘s head on a pike vs. demanding that we, you know, actually institute a long-term solution.
Everybody who can be taken seriously knows this is not about health and safety. This is just an opportunity to pile on Michigan and hide behind some bullshit façade of health and safety and maintaining the moral high ground.
November 9th, 2023 at 9:51 AM ^
Why? One team is nearing 1,000 wins the other team is not anywhere close to that.
November 9th, 2023 at 9:51 AM ^
I've never heard of Dave Clawson before and who hates Wake Forest?
This is all about Harbaugh and Michigan. Harbaugh gets into people's skin - especially those born on third base. The hatred of Michigan from other B1G has probably lasted over a century.
Harbaugh = Ferris Bueller
Third Base = Mr. Rooney
I got you Ferris!
November 9th, 2023 at 9:56 AM ^
Elrod was a coach on the Wake staff prior to Clawson taking over. He wasn't retained and then tried to sabotage Clawson.
November 9th, 2023 at 9:53 AM ^
The NCAA could turn out to be our friend in this matter. It is the B1G and the slanted media that is our current foe.
November 9th, 2023 at 9:57 AM ^
Stranger things have happened, but given that the NCAA thinks that Harbaugh lied to them about the cheeseburgers and wasn't willing to accept a four game suspension for that, my guess is they impose some substantial discipline whenever their investigation concludes.
November 9th, 2023 at 10:13 AM ^
I suspect Michigan suddenly coming out with a high level lawfirm backing them might have them back down some. I think Michigan's tired of the BS and that everyone thinks they're fair game to hammer for minor infractions. If the Michigan gets the Big Ten to back off, I think the NCAA wild settle on a reasonable and small punishment for this like 2 years from now
November 9th, 2023 at 9:56 AM ^
We know why. Because that scandal didn't have a firm that was strategically giving the media stories for maximum impact. The whole Petitti/Harbaugh suspension situation has distracted people from the fact that we still don't know the source of this info and how it was disseminated
Also, because no one really gives a shit about Wake Forest
November 9th, 2023 at 9:58 AM ^
This - offensive PR and opposition research are probably the next major innovations in big money college sports. Welcome to the new NCAA.
November 9th, 2023 at 10:26 AM ^
Hey man, watch yourself! That’s my other alma mater you are talking about. There are people that care about Wake Forest!
Now, I had never heard of WakeyLeaks until reading about it on a Michigan sports blog, so I am clearly not one of those people. But I’m sure there are people out there that do care and they will be very angry with you.
Also, WakeyLeaks is a catchy name, but I would have gone with the DemonDeaconDeceit.
