Fall Camp Notes

The camp news is starting roll out. As always, it is mostly positive. Nobody likes to hear about setbacks or deficiencies. Staying positive.......QB#1 belongs to Patterson. He has been really, really good. He finds open receivers when pressured . McCaffery is just as good, but clearly number #2. McCaffery can take advantage of the defense with his legs. There is some distance between QB#2 and QB#3 (Milton). RB has been very entertaining. Lots of views and differing opinions. Depending on the date, time, or person it could be any of the three. You will hear about Wilson holding off the other two, Turner taking snaps with the ones, and Charbonnet excelling early. It's a great problem to have for an inexperienced group. Who can be the best RB in pass protection?

WR's & TE's are a known quantity. Collins, Black, DPJ, Bell, and McKeon have been called out many times. The three WR's have been dinged up a little. No big deal. DPJ caught a long ball for a 70 yard TD. McKeon is probably the most complete player at TE (receiving and blocking). Eubanks always seems to be in the conversation and Erick All is being hailed for his great hands. Sainristil gets mentioned as the slot. Black, Bell, and Collins are having a great camp and Johnson has entered the conversation. The latter may be premature.

The OL story has to be the best news we have heard in years. They are deep and talented. We have 4 potential All B1G lineman or All-Americans (1-2). Hard to believe we can say that right now after years of depth issues. Mayfield is my leader at RT. Steuber is just as good. They both could start. The 2 and 3 deep can fill any void if needed. Rumler, Carpenter, and Hayes have a very bright future.

On defense, let's just start with Jeter. He is getting the praise he deserves for all the hard work he has put in. He will play a lot. Hutchinson, Paye, Kemp, Hudson and Dwumfour are extremely talented and the drop off isn't as steep as anticipated from last year. Dwumfour has been limited somewhat and not serious. Add Danna and Uche to the mix. Uche gets it done no matter where he plants his feet.

LB's are in great shape. We are deep even though Devin Bush has moved on. Ross leads this group along with Gil and McGrone. Lots of talented players in the mix which includes Anthony. The only real concern seems to be at CB. Thomas was expected to be there. Gray appears to be next, but challenged by JKP and Green. JKP gets mentioned in the two deep? The CB#2 position battle won't be settled for some time. The Safety news reminds me of our current RB question marks. Metellus is a lock. What happens on the other side? Signs point to Hawkins. He seems to be having a great camp so far. Dax needs to grow up in a hurry. At Nickel, plenty of viable options....Hawkins, Hill, JKP, etc. Let's see how it plays out.

Special Teams nods go to Moody and Hart early. Moody has improved his distance. Robbins is back in the mix at Punter after last year's injury. The return game appears to be in the hands of Sainristil, Turner, DPJ, and Jackson (not much talk lately). Thomas has not been available.

Secondary won’t really be tested until Iowa 10/5. Not even REALLY tested until Notre Dame.

Think theres plenty of time to figure out those issues

Moody easily kicked multiple field  goals greater than 50 yards last year, why does everybody want to talk about him having inferior leg strength to Nordin?   To hear you describe four defensive lineman (and Hudson) as ‘extremely talented’  is music to my ears, but I can’t help but have a little bit of skepticism with that emphatic compliment.

Thanks for the morsels umbig11

Not worth a new thread (?) but Devin Bush is tearing it up in his first pro action.  9 tackles (6 solo) at the 2 min warning in the first half.  (On NFL network now)

That’s the thing about the OSU series. People fixate on coaching, but often overlooked is how U-M makes killer mistakes in those games and OSU just doesn’t. OSU's tying FG drive at the end of regulation in 2016; the 3rd-down conversion on Haskins' first drive in 2017 (despite a crushing hit). At some point, U-M just has to come through like that.

Seems to me like Patricia and Quinn are trying to build something that worked 20 years ago, but is now obsolete.  Big, heavy players all over the field, and set positions.  Rather than the fluidity of coverage that speed can bring you.  It's like they're building Lloyd Carr's teams in the NFL...

The Hockenson pick lost me, I'm no longer in Quinn's corner.  That either turns out to be a homerun and I admit I was wrong, or he should be fired for malfeasance.
