Exit Michael Dwumfour

One of the original spring practice heros. Maurice Hurst but faster and stronger. Good luck!
January 14th, 2020 at 5:14 PM ^
Good luck young man.

Come on Don, honest mistake.

I would guess he's destined to be a reverse Mike Danna who goes from Michigan to the MAC. Sad that he never really panned out here.
January 14th, 2020 at 5:19 PM ^
Let's be honest, he got offered to keep Rashan happy, and it didn't work out. Best of luck, but I guess he really wasn't injured for the bowl.
January 14th, 2020 at 6:08 PM ^
I guess the word on the insider street was he had a surgery.
It'd make more sense if it was going to take time to heal with no guarantee if he'd get back to 100%, while taking up a scholarship for his 5th and final year.
January 14th, 2020 at 6:14 PM ^
Don't know why you got downvoted for rashan not working out
January 14th, 2020 at 6:21 PM ^
What didn’t work out? He didn’t become the second coming of Maurice Hurst, but he was a contributing rotation player. When you look at the attrition lists you see a lot of guys who literally never contributed anything substantive at all, to the point that one could forget they were on the team.
Dwumfour contributed. He was a valuable part of the team. He didn’t live up to some of the practice hype (and that’s all it was—I’ve found it more sensible to treat camp coachspeak as stuff that the coaches think the players need to hear, rather than a complete picture of what is happening) but he produced a lot more than one might have expected.
I’m disappointed he’s going, but it sounds like the window is closing for him here.
January 14th, 2020 at 7:30 PM ^
Doesn't seem like we have a stable of proven DT's. You would think it would behoove us to keep a kid like this around just in case. Maybe he heals up.
January 14th, 2020 at 8:38 PM ^
Hoping to see some DTs here off the portals. Though with the offense Michigan has, no one DT is going to make the difference. Michigan really needs to make upgrades on offense and work to outscore teams, like all the other teams at the top are doing.
January 14th, 2020 at 5:18 PM ^
This one is brutal.
Everyone who's been bitching about nothing for the last several weeks (or about things that we've already known): Here is your chance to get some bitch on.
That said, if they pull the kid from Stanford then no foul.
January 14th, 2020 at 5:22 PM ^
He's always injured and doesn't do much when he isn't. Media assumed he was Hurst Jr. which was ridiculous.
January 15th, 2020 at 11:36 PM ^
You mean Hurst Jr. Jr.?
January 14th, 2020 at 5:30 PM ^
He had another procedure done in December. He can't stay on the field, so all this is doing is clearing up a scholarship for someone who can.
This is a move to bolster depth, not an unfortunate event that hurts depth.
January 14th, 2020 at 5:52 PM ^
thanks doc. feel bad for the kid but the explanation makes sense. wish him very well.
January 14th, 2020 at 6:18 PM ^
agree with this take -- gave a lot to this team, but not so much on the field. good luck to him.
January 14th, 2020 at 5:20 PM ^
I could understand if he wanted to put his name into the draft to test the waters but to transfer when a starting spot is there barring an injury...?
Can't use playing time as a reason for leaving so this has to be an internal dissatisfaction thing or something has come up where he needs to leave? I don't know a lot but I do know we can't have nice things.
January 14th, 2020 at 5:47 PM ^
Well, hopefully our two very highly rated, young 300 lb DTs are ready to make an impact. With Kemp back (and possibly the Stanford grad Transfer), we should have a net gain at interior DLine next year. Best of luck to the young man.
January 14th, 2020 at 5:58 PM ^
Not a starter. Behind Kemp and hinton
January 14th, 2020 at 8:14 PM ^
It's the dline though. Dline is one position group where teams rotate guys. Second string dlinemen are on the field a good amount during a game.
January 14th, 2020 at 6:04 PM ^
Could just as easily be a firm handshake. Injury prone, not an every down guy. If the staff felt like he was going to drop below Hinton (almost certainly) and Smith (maybe), they might have felt like the open spot was better than the depth.
January 14th, 2020 at 5:20 PM ^
Don't worry, we recruited a 235 lb DT this class so he'll probably be able to give us some snaps there this fall.
January 14th, 2020 at 5:22 PM ^
Why do you do this to yourself if it makes you so miserable?
January 14th, 2020 at 6:16 PM ^
Because maizen has a legitimate mental illness and has an unhealthy obsession with Michigan Football particularly Michigan Football recruiting and because he's mentally ill he can't just be involved with it on a normal level. That's my guess, even your high level miserable bastards would never behave like he does, he's pathological about it.
January 15th, 2020 at 1:55 AM ^
Mentally ill seems extreme. But maybe I guess.
January 14th, 2020 at 6:38 PM ^
it is genuinely weird to relish being so reviled by everyone. reminds me of the kids at school that can't tell the difference between good and bad attention. sad.
January 14th, 2020 at 11:11 PM ^
He doesn’t enjoy being reviled though. That’s why he’s on his 20th username and continues to make new ones. If he didn’t care he’d take the negs and move on.
January 14th, 2020 at 7:14 PM ^
I got banned before for telling you I slept with your mom. I feel more and more justified every time you take on a new name and shitpost nonstop
January 14th, 2020 at 5:21 PM ^
I hope he finds what he's looking for next year.
As for the team he's leaving behind, it's not a huge deal. They'll replace him with some warm body from the transfer portal, a la Danna.
Life goes on.
January 14th, 2020 at 5:22 PM ^
Everythings fine, just plug in Ben Mason...
January 14th, 2020 at 5:26 PM ^
Harbaugh hates when players are injured all the time. I’m leaning towards Dwumfour getting the firm handshake here.
Our DT situation is v frustrating
January 14th, 2020 at 5:27 PM ^
So......Mazi and Hinton are already annointed as starters and we're bringing in some badass grad transfers and Dwumfour decided to go get playing time elsewhere? Right?...Anyone?
January 14th, 2020 at 5:33 PM ^
That's the charitable view on this.
Somebody earlier said it can't be playing time related, but that isn't necessarily the case if the scenario you outline is likely to happen. I could easily see Hinton jumping ahead of Dwumfor & then Smith & some transfer (maybe the Stanford DT) eating into a bunch of Dwumfor snaps too. That plus the continued reliance on a 3-3-5 defensive set might mean less PT for the guy.
Still, I don't like the lack of depth. Again. If one of the above things don't pan out for us, we are pretty much screwed again.
January 14th, 2020 at 5:55 PM ^
The reliance on 3-3-5 was pretty much caused by the lack of depth at DT. We started the year with a converted fullback as our starter/3rd DT. If your DT is getting blown off the ball, it’s typically more ideal to shoot a linebacker through a gap. Even when Dwumfour was playing, we didn’t have a third DT we really trusted so when a DT needed a breather, replacing him with an extra linebacker was the move more often than not.
January 14th, 2020 at 6:23 PM ^
Dwumfour was a liability against the run, too. Hard to get on the field when your best lineup against the run doesn’t include you, and the passing down lineup is a small-ball group of pass rushers whose best mix also doesn’t include you.
January 14th, 2020 at 5:45 PM ^
Hoping you're right.
January 14th, 2020 at 6:15 PM ^
Don Brown is playing a 3 - 3 - 5, he will rotate Hinton, Kemp, Mazi, and Jeter if he doesn't leave, with Hutchinson and Paye at the ends. That's the defense going forward. Maybe they both see the field on goal line and short yardage but his base only needs 1 tackle.
January 14th, 2020 at 5:29 PM ^
For those complaining.
No one has a clue what the DT depth chart will look like next fall. None. Not even Chernobyl.
January 14th, 2020 at 5:59 PM ^
Rush- Paye / Vilain
DT- Hinton / Jeter
NT- Kemp / Smith
SDE- Hutchinson / Upshaw or McGregor
Other ends- Ojabo / Newburg
Other DT- Speight / Morris / Welschof
January 14th, 2020 at 6:20 PM ^
Still waiting on Welschof.
January 15th, 2020 at 2:27 PM ^
He hasn't landed his last mega grind yet.
When he does touch down, he'll be READY!
January 14th, 2020 at 8:12 PM ^
I thought o read here that Jeter was moving on too?
January 14th, 2020 at 6:09 PM ^
It will look like 8-4. Third in the B1G East in year 6 of Harbaugh.
January 14th, 2020 at 6:53 PM ^
Such a rosy outlook.
January 14th, 2020 at 7:50 PM ^
Umbig11. I would love to bet the over on 8.5 with you. And I’m very serious about this bet. Let make it official. Let me know if serious and we can work out the details.
January 14th, 2020 at 8:19 PM ^
Precisely. I would say I'm amazed people here are still defending this shit but fanboys gotta fanboy. He'll be 0-10 against OSU before we know it and there will still be some true believers who will continue making excuses.
