Exit: Brian Cole?

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on
There is noise that Scout.com is saying Brian Cole is done at Michigan. Can anyone confirm?

We've got people on here talking shit about this kid and essentially accusing him of criminal behaiour (smoking weed).  1) is any of this substantiated and 2) if it is. does it need to be broadcast.    If it turns out that he got punted, I'm okay with "violation of team rules" and don't feel the need to make it worse for the kid.  He's lost enough.

While I'm bitching, let's hope that we're not just making room in he cupboard like other programs do when they have a numbers crunch.  Neg away!!

It is illegal as a civil infraction. Moreover it is criminal in the state of michigan, and at the federal level. So, I'd that's what happened, it is illegal. Next, if it did happen, it is a violation of team policy and drug testing rules the kids all know about. I'm not going to make a stand that pot should or shouldn't be illegal but it is and he knows this, and that it is a violation of team rules and expected conduct. HE knows better. I hope there's no truth, and that he remains with the team next yea because I think he could a heck of a player.

This is sad all the way around.  Would benefit Brian to stay at Michigan.  Maybe he can be a student for a while?

Anyways, I don't smoke but it should not be illegal.  How it fits into a team is another matter though.

"A few of you will get weeded out", some players actually took that literally?

I don't get the issue. Pot has been decriminalized since the 70s in A2. Didn't anyone here go to the Hash Bash on April 1 every year in The Diag?

By using this logic, players that drink beer or liquor who are underage should also be kicked off the team, because both of these can easily affect performance on the field. I can't recall the last 19 yr old football player who was booted after participating in an all night raging kegger. Not accusing you of this, but that's pretty hypocritical if that's what would happen.

I don't get your argument. It's not one instance that is getting him kicked off the team.

If he was boozing a lot I'm sure the same thing would happen. Weed isn't the issue. Substance abuse that negatively affects your performance is.

Does anyone think the coaches really care about who's smoking weed? They care about problems that come to their attention and affect performance. Whether weed-related or not, Cole's problems obviously got to the point where they were affecting his performance and the team and couldn't be ignored. It really doesn't matter whether it's legal or illegal. If Cole is off the team, I think you can reasonably surmise that he was given multiple chances to do what he needed to do, but continued to be a problem. The team can do without a player like that, regardless of his physical talent.

"Rolling a spliff..." regularly can impact a player's wind negatively. Vaping or using a pen, not so much as long as it's the night before. But it can be embarrassing to the program when it's splashed across the headlines or social media, so Coach Harbs is right in cracking down on Cole, if that's his issue.

Living in a legalization state, I can certainly opine that, as a father of three, I have mixed feelings about legalization and the trickle down to the youth. I'd choose MJ over ETOH as a habit for my kids, if they have to have one, but understand well that each has its drawbacks and hope that they reach true adulthood (25+) without any "habits" as most substances, if habitualized, interfere w/the maturation process. Maybe Glasgow can share his growth with Cole and he can rise above whatever is holding him back.

A family member of mine who has known Brian for years said they talked months ago and Brian was basically off the team then. 3 Strikes. Missed a practiced, missed some classes, and smoked some weed. I've been wondering for a long time when this would become official. This was what Brian actually told her. Guess the delay was maybe his chance to get out of the doghouse but apparently he didn't.

If drug use was the issue the kid is a moron and should be booted off the team. There is no room for weed or other drugs in college athletics. If one wants to attend college and do drugs then they can waste their own time and money.

If an athlete is doing drugs booting them off the team and yanking the scholarship is doing them a favor Gives them time to pull thier head out of thier ass and realize all that they are wasting. If this rankles your generation x brain I can live with that.

I am from Saginaw and have seen this kid play live multiple times.  He is probably the 2nd best athlete on our team.  He is very much in the mold of a Peppers.  I am higher on his athletic ability than probably anyone on this board.

However, since he was a Michigan commit and i did not feel like getting hammered on this forum because all our commits are the best and are perfect angels, i believe i refrained from saying the negatives of Cole.

If he indeed is off the team, i will share my thoughts.

Don't kid yourself, Brian Cole is most certainly one of the best athletes on the UM roster...speed and athleticism wise.  During his junior year of high school he played against a very good Midland High team with an outstanding defense and ran for 215 yards, most of those yards were completely on his own.  After the game the Midland High coach said Brian Cole is better than Mark Ingram who also played in the same conference (Saginaw Valley League).  There is no questioning his athletic ability but Brian has to make a commitment to become the best possible football player and quit doing all the other BS.  I'm convinced if he cut out the crap and focused on football he would be one of our starting safeties next year.  The kid has the size, speed and athleticism to play on Sunday's but he needs to change his ways quickly.

I never saw the kid play, but the reviews by everyone, including all of the earlier posters confirmed his athletic capabilities.  I thought something must be up when he didn't play this year.

What a shame.

Cole at OSU.  Too bad he's having trouble keeping it together, because his skills are off the chart.  I have no idea, but perhaps the situation is to the point where he needs this to get things in life together.  We had Noah Spence (whose father happens to also be in law enforcement),  just an unreal talent, but he had a molly problem and finally ended up at Eastern Kentucky.  The good news is that he has kept things together and is playing in the Senior Bowl this weekend--looks to be a top 15 pick in the draft.  I have to think that if Cole is off the team, then the UM staff and parents think it's what needs to happen.  If that is the case, then hopefully everything is in place for him to get the help he needs.  Whatever one's thoughts about this drug and that drug, if someone puts something like that before his future it's not a good thing.  Hope to see a happy ending to this story.

By all accounts, Brian comes from a wonderful family.  Hopefully his parents will have a serious discussion with him about focusing and reaching his potential.  He just needs to make better decisions and he will be a big time player at Michigan.
