I wasn't trying to be funny. All for the bag.

And as far as Sparty narratives about paying players, who cares? Everyone in the free world knows Duke, Kentucky, et al. do it and do they care? No, because college fans know that the players deserve the money and it's actually a good thing they are being paid for the work they perform. I genuinely hope Juwan is using the bag early and often.

The Sparty narrative at RCMB started the day Juwan was hired.  If that was your only news source you would think that M brought back “one of the biggest cheaters in the history of college sports”  despite the fact that JH was never indicated in the Ed Martin case (and totally ignoring that fact that he was giving cash - maybe not as much - to players going to MSU.)

Ok.  You're 17 years old, don't have a ton of family money, and are a top-20 basketball recruit.

School A offers you $200k.

School B offers you $0.

Who are you choosing?

Thinking that there are 5-stars out there NOT getting paid by boosters is naive, quaint, and kinda hilarious.  Once one school is offering money, then EVERY school has to offer money, just to keep up with the Joneses.

These recruits didn't grow up drinking the Michigan kool-aid. To a kid from California who wasn't even alive the last time Michigan won a title, there is nothing more "special" about Michigan than Texas, Arizona, Minnesota, or UNC. To the 5-stars, college basketball is just a means to an end, and they'll take the best deal they can get.

The fact that our fanbase continues on this delusional path of "WE'RE HOLIER THAN EVERYONE ELSE" largely makes us the laughingstock of the college sports world. I'm sorry if this shatters your worldview a bit, but it's just reality...

Assumptions and speculation is all I’m hearing.

You know for a fact that every kid in AAU is poor and looking for a paycheck. Paint with a broad brush much?

UM basketball during JB’s tenure was a laughingstock? And those kids didn’t see UM go to two national championship games? Oh right, they’re so poor they probably don’t own TVs.

Boosters don’t have to be tied to coaches. so is it possible someone associated with UM is posting these kids? Sure, it’s possible. But until you offer any evidence that a booster or Juwan is cheating you’re just speculating. I bet you get out of jury duty quite easily.

Exactly - Juwan is a player's coach with strong NBA connections - something that young recruits are interested in. He's also reeled in a few other great players so far - and other players want to be a part of that. He's got something exciting going on. If they're getting paid - prove it.

You're right - its all misguided assumptions. Not every AAU kid is poor and taking illicit under-the-table payments (also - a lot of the kids' families definitely could use some cash but not all of them automatically take the NCAA violation option). I imagine some of them would also like to avoid any entangling relationships and wait a year or two to collect a much bigger and legal payment.

I have a hard time believing Juwan wants to attract too much attention to his recruiting if he’s cheating to do it.

My god this sanctimonious bullshit is the worst part about this fanbase. Juwan knows how the game is played. Beilein left because he knew what he had to do to get 5 stars and refused to do it because he is, at his heart, a rule-follower.

I will eat crow as soon as you show me any evidence that he’s cheating. I refuse to accuse someone of doing something just because “every other coach is doing it” and “don’t be naive, that’s what you have to do to get these guys”. You’re offering nothing other than speculation. WHERE IS YOUR PROOF? Oh right, you don’t have any.

1. There is literally no moral quandary related to this. Every other blue/purple blood is doing it. Saying I'm "accusing" him without proof is the wrong way of phrasing this because I don't view it as a bad thing, and neither should you.

2. Open your eyes. Juwan is a good recruiter. He's also going up against schools offering 200k. The idea that these kids are getting *nothing* from Michigan's network is ridiculous.

Shit, man, put yourself in their shoes. Would you rather have a somewhat more charismatic head coach for 1-2 years or $200,000? ESPECIALLY if you don't come from money, which a lot of these kids don't.

You can’t say it’s not a moral quandary when there are risks and consequences involved. And there’s the obligatory “everyone else is doing it”

i can never put myself in these kid’s shoes. I grew up poor but with little to no athletic ability. Nothing worth paying for anyway.

i can’t say if these kids are getting paid or not because I don’t know and neither do any of you. Maybe I’m naive, most likely the case, but Juwan seems like a genuinely good dude who LOVES UM. Why would he try to send it back to the Brian Elerbe days in his first year? His first head coaching job ever.

It’s not about charisma.
It’s who do high school kids get more hyped about playing for?

A 66 year old white guy from upstate New York who is known for; his attention to detail and fundamentals?

Or a 46 year old black guy from the south side projects of Chicago, who is known for; being part of the most famous college b-ball team of the last 30 years which changed the look and feel or basketball with the baggy shorts and swagger, signing the first $100 million contract in NBA history, having a 19-year NBA career including being teammates of LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, winning a few NBA championships, then coaching LeBron James and Dwayne, and who still has swagger and was dancing on the court when Michigan beat Gonzaga a few months ago, also who is known for having a “let the kids play their way through mistakes” style of coaching?

It is also against the rules. I would hope that somebody would provide proof before making an allegation that Juwan and his staff are engaging in this type of activity.

Michigan is special, and is about excellence with integrity. I believe that Juwan buys into this mission 100%.

It is ridiculous to say that because some cheat, everybody cheats, or everybody has to cheat to get any excellent players.

I am sure Michigan loses out on many players because they will not cheat. However, Michigan is special in many ways that other programs are not, so it has a value proposition to attract excellent players. This includes integrity.  Juwan is also special and has many unique skills, contacts, and ability to reach these student athletes without cheating

As John Beilein showed, you do not have to be dirty to be successful. It just takes much longer to build that level of success.

I would agree that the rules are not equitable. The problem does not rise to the level of morality. Nobody is being abused here. The players are compensated very well with room and board, and in the case of Michigan, an excellent excellent education. They also are developed and trained to move to the next level and have access to contacts that can make that happen; although there are no guarantees. Nobody is forced into this system, and in general, the rules prohibit abuse.

While I would agree that the players deserve more, it does not rise to the moral level of mandating that the rules should not be followed.  I think that line of thinking is just being used as a convenient excuse to pursue the easy way out

You might be the most naive man in the world. You're expecting me to believe that a never-been-a-head coach or coached in college person, comes into a sport notorious for needing to cheat to get 5 stars, with a short cycle since he arrived late, comes in and all of a sudden starts grabbing 5 stars because Michigan is special place when those same recruits didn't even give Michigan the time of day before?

I believe Michigan is special. Being associated with this great university is special, and, in and of itself, provides benefits to all of its students that benefits them for a lifetime, and go beyond money and material possessions. This is more important than any win or loss. Integrity is the most important asset that this university has.  Mr. Manuel, and Coaches Harbaugh, Howard, Hutchins, et al. live that every day, and sometimes must swallow their pride on the field as a result. Many of the recruiting battles we lose are indicators that this is true. If this belief without any proof to the contrary makes me naive, then so be it.

I find your lack of confidence in both Michigan and Juwan Howard unfortunate. I would hope that you could allow yourself to have some faith that both have something very compelling to offer that mean more than money.
