Excellent jump at the snap by Hutch! Elite! Best in Country!...... but some cry offsides?

On this play Aidan Hutchinson gets a dragster at a Christmas Tree green light jump:

I think 79 is looking around saying, "Did anyone get the license plate of that truck?" ?

But looking at it from a second angle is making some people cry "Offsides!"

Taking the time to look carefully and scrutinize it, it looks like he goes at the instant the ball makes it's first movement. It's possible he started a smallest fraction of a second early in anticipation of the snap, which is completely fine in the rules as long as the player isn't offsides. And he's not.

I think to some it looks like he's offsides because of how in slow motion, in comparison to Hutch, everyone else is to react to the snap. Even all the Iowa players aren't reacting any where near as quickly as him---and they know the snap count!!

I think this is some kind of exceptional reflexes and speed by Aidan Hutchinson. So good, in fact, it shows why he should win the Heisman. But that's just me.

What do you think? Offsides? Or amazing? Or some other adjective?

I'll admit it - watching it live, I thought the refs missed it. But watching it in slow mo shows he timed it perfectly. Didn't get to the QB but added another trucking highlight to his already extensive reel. Thanks for sharing.

Either he guesses well or he's watching the Center subtly shift his weight, not ball movement.  I'm going with the later.  You will too as you notice the Iowa center shifting his weight just before he moves the ball.

In swimming or track he would have been called for a false start. But in football, he definitely was not offsides. It looks as though he did jump ahead of the snap. Since he has never been called for offsides, I would say that it’s unlikely he guessed. Someone, it may have been his dad, said that Aiden has an uncanny understanding of what the offense is going to do. Something to think about.

It's not only the amazing timing but it's the speed to beat the tackle to the spot and the strength to then run the guy over and get to the QB.  He also showed great restraint and mental quickness to not hit the QB after seeing the ball was out of his hands.

All of this in one play.  And he does this multiple times per game.

Hutch for HeisMan.

Notice that he is not directly on the line.  Meaning he has a little bit of wiggle room between when he starts moving and when he hits the line of scrimmage.

Pretty sure that is intentional.  He gives himself a small buffer, then really anticipates the snap, meaning that he hits the LOS already moving forward and at a point that the O-Line is just starting to get their balance set.

I'm guessing if you measured it, he has elite reaction time.

It’s amazing how much our biases affect our perception. My attempt at looking objectively at fixed points in the video in slow mo is that is was exactly the same moment. Then again, I’m skewed. Either way it’s close enough to not get called and works so whatever.

Von Miller has/had a similar first step and has actually been called offsides in the NFL when in fact he was not. It’s a rare combination of skill and talent.

Its things like this that are why he's in New York and Will Anderson is not.  There was a fair amount of complaining that Anderson has more tackles and more sacks, so why isn't he there?  Well, it's a helluva lot easier for an OLB to get through the line on a blitz and/or get to a ball carrier and pass catcher in the open field - because that is their friggen job!  Linebackers will always have more counting numbers and stats than a SDE will ever have.

Aidan Hutchinson makes a bigger impact on Michigan's defense than Anderson makes for Alabama's.  And that is why Aidan is in NY.

When you watch the video, Hutch's first movement is a load/crouch right before he explodes off the line.

He starts his motion (loading) right as the center starts shifting his weight back and has it timed to explode forward right as the ball starts moving.  Great timing, great first step, have been saying that he will be the 1st overall pick for awhile now and sticking to it....

The can go as soon as the ball moves (and he DOES) doesn’t have to wait for their slow ass Oline to move first
