Eight Years Ago Today - Trey Burke Hits the Trey Against Kansas

Submitted by 1989 UM GRAD on March 29th, 2021 at 9:28 AM

It's exactly eight (elite) years ago today that Trey hit the three-pointer to send the Kansas game in to overtime.  And we all know what came next.  Based on what we've seen with Dickinson, it's incredible that McGary wasn't called for a foul on the pick he set.

Where were you watching?

With whom were you watching?

What was your reaction when he hit the shot?

I was alone watching the game in our family room.  I'm assuming the game must've been a 7PM start...because, during the intermission before the overtime period, I realized it was completely dark out...and in the family room...other than the glow of the television.

During the intermission, my doorbell rings.  One of my friends was at the door with his ten-year old daughter.  They had been driving around listening to the game and wanted to watch the overtime period on television.  As I am somewhat superstitious - and this felt like a major change in game-watching conditions that could adversely affect the result - I would've told him to get the fuck out...had he been alone.  So, the presence of his daughter gained him entry in to my house.  I did tell him that if we lost, it would be his fault.

We had plans to be in Miami for spring break, so we watched the Final Four game at a Michigan bar...and then diverted to Atlanta on our way home to Detroit for the championship game!

Watching with Indy Matt - he was 6 1/2 years old and just starting to fall in love with basketball. That was a surreal feeling. At no point during that game did I feel like we would win it until that shot. In winning time, Trey took over. Everybody knew we would win that game in overtime because we dominated the last three minutes of the game. Trey took over overtime as well. We went berserk, jumping and running around the family room. Great memories - thanks Trey, Mitch, Beilein and company!

I forgot to add (why can't we edit OPs?!?) that I attended the championship game with 2023 UM Grad (just found out he got in to the School of Information!).

We ran in to Zack Novak in the airport on the way home...so I'm looking forward to seeing the picture I took of my son with him when it pops up in my Facebook memories in about a week!

Dang, my two youngest weren't even born then.  I remember sitting at a BWW with my wife next to a table of kansas fans. I was looking pretty dejected while they were jawing away.  Moods changed quickly.

In my living room with a bored wife that was surfing something.  Probably facebook or chickens, or some such drivel.  When he hit that shot it was a classic 'what the f...  OHHHH YEAH!!!!!!" moment!  Might have woken the 2 year old as I came off the couch, but that was 8 years ago now, so whatever...

I still can't believe he jacked that up out of nowhere.  Nothing but the sweet, sweet sound of 'swish'...

I was in the living room along with the wife, nervous as all get out, hoping the guy misses his free throw - he does! - getting the ball to Trey, the move across the court, bodies hitting the floor, Trey heroically launching - launching! - the ball up into, heck, across the sky, creating a trajectory that every one was following, falling back into the atmosphere, down towards the basket - BOOM! I don't know what the single greatest play in Michigan sports history is,  but Trey's shot has to be in the conversation...

Watched at a bar in Chicago- near the Merchandise Mart but I think it's been out of business for a few years.

I'll never forget my reaction to the shot- I just sprinted about 10 feed.  Ended up in front of a family casually eating dinner, with my hands on my head like my mind was blown (spoiler- it was).  They looked over and laughed really hard but the dopamine hit all at once and that was the only response my body knew.

I watched this game the other day on BTN and I took away quite a few things:

1. The game itself has changed quite a bit in 8 years. The 30 second short clock has helped speed the game up immensely. Teams wouldn’t even get into their sets for the most part til around 25 seconds. Another way the game has changed is that Michigan kept being hammered for “going small” when in fact our lineup is akin to basically what all teams run nowadays. Kansas the entire game kept two bigs on the floor at the same time; and none of their 4s or 5s could really stretch the floor at all.

2. We were so immensely talented but were pretty poor defensively. The amount of athleticism and length we had on the floor, we should have been a better defensive team.

3. The amount of things that needed to go our way that game that did is pretty remarkable. The 10 second call and missed 1 and 1 we’re gifts Elijah Johnson gave to us.

Good post. I think people were used to Beilein's way of building a team by 2013, so it wasn't frowned upon, but in the intervening years we've certainly seen basketball follow that pattern in a big way.

A significant driver of this, of course, was the color man marveling at Burke's shot: Steve Kerr. He would shortly decamp to Golden State and turn the splash brothers into the future/present of basketball.

Michigan was decent defensively that year, but defense wasn't Beilein's specialty and we were kind of used to it until he started correcting the issue in the 16/17 season.

Just a massive dog pile of people in a friends apartment. We had started doing shots right as the comeback started, so we had to help the team and kept doing shots.

People were literally just yelling as they ran around campus after that game, it was incredible.

8 Years ago, I was 10 years old. I remember going up to bed when Michigan was down big in the middle of the second half. I also distinctly remember my mom coming to get me out of bed because Michigan had come back and being able to see the shot. I doubt at that age I quite understood or appreciated it as much as I would now.

There was a big event at a local bar that I had to work for a little bit. I got so engrossed in to the game that I was no longer doing any sort of work. I was animated enough that it was entertaining and had the little bar in OHIO rooting for Michigan with me. Ran around the entire bar giving everyone a high five after Burke's shot. Such a fun night. I don't remember much after the game due to excessive celebrating.

My soon-to-be-wife has been watching games w/ me all March. She is not a sports fan and likes to complain and make fun of my reactions to the games. When Bama hit that three at the end of regulation she let out an audible gasp. I may convert her in to a sports fan yet, and thus won't have to divorce her!

In a restaurant bar in Mooresville, NC with my then girlfriend. She patiently waited for the game to end. She was a saint..  I'm surprised no one has posted the video. I love watching the reactions of the Kansas fans when they show the replay shot

My wife and older daughter were at the church doing some decorating with some other ladies. I was at home with our youngest daughter, 5. I was using some of the free 4-hour allotment available for streaming, since it was on cable and we were on a tight budget at the time, precluding a cable subscription.

I spent most of the game downcast, sitting on the floor, watching it on a tablet.

Then Burke made the shot. And my reaction was... loud. My daughter, playing in another part of the room, was momentarily terrified. I was over the moon.

That comeback, that shot, that win: we've had other great shots, we've had other runs since then. But that was where Michigan reached the heights for the first time since the 90s. Everything that has happened since, to me, dates back to that shot.

The team was elite most of the year, but had finished unsteadily, coughed up a chance to win a B1G title, and quietly surrendered early in the B1G tournament. A Sweet Sixteen appearance was nice, but to me, with a team that at one point had reached as high as #2 in the polls, felt like a disappointment. And back then, who knew if we'd ever have a team this good again.

The shot changed all that. It made the season. Michigan was one of college basketball's elite teams and had the result to prove it.

Made the season. Made the program. That play is an instant-watch every time I see it.

That Kansas team was scary good.  And about 90% of the game, I think we were trailing by around 8 points.  It was becoming clear to me that this game was going to end just like the Duke game ended for us two years prior in the tournament...where we played just hard enough to lose by 2 points.  The media compliments you for a strong showing but it's basically a participation award.

Watched the game with dad in his man cave on the big screen.  Screamed, "he got it!!!!"  when it went through.  Max Bielfelt's mouth on the floor reaction was my exact reaction.

my mother (a faithful Piston's fan for decades) just got done saying, "I don't know why they foul like that, it never works.  The other team makes their free throws and it just puts them farther behind"  And Low and Behold.....it fucking worked!!!!!    (in her defense, it might have been the only time I witnessed it working)

Greatest sporting event I’ve ever seen live! The amount of Joy in the stadium after the game was unreal. Had my father there with me which made it even more special. Great night in Texas for the Maize & Blue.

My oldest was about 6 months old and in bed, so I was trying not to make tons of noise when the game went crazy. My wife was working at a hospital at the time was trying to get peaks of the game from a patient's room who was watching, but I remember giving her a play-by-play over the phone at the end of the comeback.

Consistently when I watch a replay of that game, I remember how big the comeback was but not how little time was left when it started. Every time Michigan makes a good shot or defensive top with 7 minutes left, I keep thinking, here's where they start making a move. And I keep being amazed at how the time keeps ticking away and the Kansas lead stays *almost* unsurmountable.

Watching with my wife and my oldest son, who would have been 5. Wife is an OSU football "fan" (we live in Ohio, she doesn't really pay much attention to sports), but seems to like watching M basketball with me and the kids sometimes. When Trey hit that shot, for some reason I thought it missed and was all "Nooooooooo!" and my wife said "he made it.". "What?!?!" When I saw she was right, I picked up my son and ran around the house like an idiot. Since I've been paying attention to Michigan sports, this is the defining moment in my fandom and I dont know if anyone will ever surpass Trey Burke as my favorite Michigan athlete.

I was in Cambodia visiting Angkor Wat, maybe it was Easter weekend? I was lucky that the hotel tv had the game, at that time internet speeds in Cambodia were definitely not good enough to stream, and anyway there were hardly any streaming options back then, esp for college sports.

I don't remember if it was a live feed or not, but when I watched it was late at night after a long day at the temples. I remember pacing around the hotel room in front of that little tv, felt like the only person in the whole damn country on the verge of freaking out watching a basketball game, trying to keep my nerves and not wake anyone up. What a game!
