Of note he was a WWII Veteran.  I know it's little brother and all by my thoughts and prayer go out to him and his family.

Edit: who are the two MGoBloggers who would neg this?  Shame on you!  When you wake up in the morning take a long look in the mirror and consider who you are.

An 18 year old in 1945 would be about 84. Guys like my grandfather who were a little older when the war started aren't all that common, but there are still a fair number of guys who were still pretty young at the end of the war. Some of those would include vets. Not to say there are a lot left, but there were a lot of WW2 vets in 1945.

My sympathies to Mark Dantonio and his family.

RIP, Mr. Dantonio.  It is a terrible loss when you lose a father or mother.  I am sure we all wish the coach the best and are sorry for his loss.

It surprises me to hear people talk about being surprised WWII vets are still alive.  I know the vets in my family are gone, but it feels like it hasn't been so long.  It was only a few years ago when Saving Private Ryan came out that the media talked about the generation we were about to lose.  I guess a few years later makes a big difference in both reality and perception.

However, we will have WWII vets for quite awhile.   It was only recently, I think in the last year, that the last WWI vet passed away.  That war ended 27 years before WWII finished.  The numbers of vets will dwindle, of course, but the last survivors of WWII will be with us for decades.  Let's hope we survive them.

This is a very sad day. As a life long Michigan fan and a hater of both MSU and OSU, it saddens me because I am from Zanesville, Ohio and graduated from the same high school as Coach Dantonio. As I do not like that he coaches for MSU, the loss of a hometown hero hits hard. Sorry for your loss Coach D.

Thoughts and prayers are with the entire family.

There will be a day soon when there won't be any vets of WW2.  I help organize and fundraise for the "Honor Flight" program in our area and it is amazing to visit with these true American Heros.  For those that don't know the Honor Flight send WW2 vets to DC to visit the Capital and WW2 Memorial.  The programs goal is to make sure that every vet of WW2 gets a chance to visit.  Our last flight was this past spring due to the fact that everyone who could go in our area, has already gone.

Thank you for your service Mr. Dantonio.

I come here for insight and because I love the rivalry.  This is the first i've heard of this news.  It brings it home for me.  I lost my mom 3 weeks ago.  Things for me were put in perspective not long ago.  I feel for Coach D's family.

Thanks for your service Mr. Dantonio and my condolences to the Dantonio family.  Never easy.  Lost my grandfather (also WWII vet) in 2006 within 6 hrs of returning home from a year combat tour in Iraq.

May God comfort Coach Dantonio in this difficult time. I want to thank Mr. Dantonio for his service and remember that he helped save the world. My dad who died a few years back was also in WWII so this really brings strong emotions to the surface for me.

is what makes sports, sports. When all is said and done, it IS just a game,  real life issues come first.

After reading these posts, I am proud to be an mgouser.

Rest In Peace Mr. Dantonio.
