This happens on every recruiting service any time a player who is rated less than 3* accepts an offer at a traditional power.  Every time.  They assume (probably correctly) that a school like Michigan has no need to recruit players that are only 2*, and that the coaches have watched more film and spent more time in person and are therefore more likely to make the correct judgment.  It's not just Harbaugh and it's not just Michigan.  Other than punters and long-snappers, it's seriously hard for a school like Alabama or FSU or OSU or UM to get stuck with even a single 2* player come signing day, even if they sign kids that should be (which probably very rarely happens).

In some cases certain recruiting services go overboard based on the amount of money they get in subscriptions from certain fan bases, e.g. there is at least one site that pretty consistently overrates any kid as soon as they get an offer from ND; not surprisingly, they get a lot of money from ND fans.  People don't pay money to get bad news.

I'm going to refer to this as the "Jake Ryan effect."

Remember Ryan was a two star prior to committing to MICH. Then he moved up to three stars. Hence the Jake Ryan Effect.

It has more to do with Michigan - where 2 star guys get bumps up to 3 even if they are recruited by Brady Hoke - then with Harbaugh, who recruited 7 2-stars in his '08 class. [Though, if Harbaugh was still coaching Stanford today, that wouldn't happen again either.]

My goodness, the butthurt from that blog over the last few weeks..."lazily poach." Sadly, this isn't the only place I've seen someone imply something like this regarding DJ's commitment. Two minutes of research would show the writer that the coaches already knew about DJ from recruiting the two previous Prattville commits and he had visited M before.
Also, they've never heard of anyone attending college far from home?

He's our 6th best recruit now (out of 10) and I think we jumped from #20 to #17 in the team rankings just like that.
