Drama at Bethune Cookman: Reggie Theus and Ed Reed
Ed Reed steps aside as Bethune Cookman head coach after 25 days:
Though it looks like the AD at Bethune Cookman, Reggie Theus (yes, that Reggie Theus), withdrew his name. Ed Reed says he didn't withdraw his name. You can see it starting at 2:36 of the video below. Deion Sanders was watching that video as it was livestreamed, and was on the phone with someone in the front row while he watched. He talked to Ed Reed at one point. Coach Prime starts talking at 7:46.
Michigan is having drama. But at least this stuff isn't happening.

I haven't looked into this deeply, but I assume they rescinded Reed's offer once they started reviewing some of his past public statements.
But as we've seen, due diligence is so passe these days.
January 21st, 2023 at 1:49 PM ^
He probably didn't make too many friends in the AD with this tweet either
January 21st, 2023 at 2:00 PM ^
Yup, that's pretty unprofessional even if he had a legitimate beef about the lack of cleaning up around the facilities.
January 21st, 2023 at 2:05 PM ^
Why would you remind your employer you're not under contract when actively dragging their reputation through the mud?!
January 21st, 2023 at 2:44 PM ^
Because you decided you didn't really want to work there?
January 21st, 2023 at 3:30 PM ^
That dirty laundry will come up in future interviews. Don’t people know that the Internet never forgets? He could have easily withdrawn is acceptance and quietly walked away.
January 21st, 2023 at 5:03 PM ^
It's not impossible to spin, though: he has such relentlessly high standards that his employer made a non-football-related decision to let him go.
If I really squint, it could even look like Harbaugh's separation from the 49ers, but I have terrible eyesight.
Edit: Oh, bummer, Cali Wolverine didn't like this joke.
January 21st, 2023 at 4:20 PM ^
Because they’re Bethune-Cooknan, he’s Ed Reed, and they need him more than he needs them.
January 21st, 2023 at 3:46 PM ^
That's funny - I used to leave a new employee's trash can half-full. If they complained about it I asked the owner to go empty their trash. It usually drained the entitlement right out of their mindset.
January 21st, 2023 at 4:02 PM ^
Did you really have nothing better to do as an employer than play weird garbage mind games with employees who you hired to do things other than take out the garbage? Seems like a toxic mindset. Not to mention the shitty smell in that office from a bunch of people with rotting fish and other foods. No thanks.
January 21st, 2023 at 4:06 PM ^
Trash <> garbage.
January 21st, 2023 at 6:34 PM ^
No but you certainly seem like trash. You probably complain about people being "entitled" too
January 21st, 2023 at 6:19 PM ^
So you hire someone and just assume off the bat that they’re going to act entitled? You sound like an awesome dude to work for.
January 21st, 2023 at 6:50 PM ^
He thinks they're going to act entitled, so he thinks he's entitled to act like an asshole. Got it.
January 21st, 2023 at 5:24 PM ^
I’ve been following this somewhat closely. It’s more likely they rescinded the deal is response to his demands - quite simply because they couldn’t afford what he was asking for.
He’d been on the job for several weeks without a contract, meaning w/o pay. Who WOULDN’T raise hell in that situation?
January 21st, 2023 at 5:44 PM ^
I think they knew what they were getting with Reed but it also sounds like he wanted them to invest back into the program to a degree that they either wouldn't or couldn't and so he got publicly mad about it. Probably not smart but I also wonder what some of these schools expect out of coaches like Reed - he's relentlessly competitive and he likely told them in the interview the broad contours of what he wanted to see.
January 21st, 2023 at 1:46 PM ^
This seems like a real shitshow
January 21st, 2023 at 1:55 PM ^
Probably complaining about trash after a hurricane hit is grounds to take your ass somewhere else.
January 21st, 2023 at 2:07 PM ^
This is all Warde’s fault
January 21st, 2023 at 2:53 PM ^
Santa needs to step in.

John U Bacon reporting that Warde has *never* spoken to Ed Reed
January 21st, 2023 at 4:33 PM ^
Congratulations! You win the internet for the day! 😁👍
January 21st, 2023 at 4:39 PM ^
Except for the dozen pictures where Warde was talking to Ed Reed

Sitting shoulder to shoulder discussing things doesn't mean they've discussed things.

Reggie used to come to the nightclub I bounced at in LA during grad school. He was always very humble, very cool. I would expect him to definitely be making wise choices and taking the highroad as opposed to Reed.
January 21st, 2023 at 10:23 PM ^
Uh huh
January 21st, 2023 at 2:34 PM ^
Does he have beginning stages of CTE? I find the whole melodramatic self absorbed coach trope pretty weird. It's a sport. A game played by kids. Calm the hell down. Nobody understands these out of context rants.
Player: "Hey coach can I use the bathroom sir?
Ed: "Man, shit I ain't gonna let you take no shit in my goddamn bathroom. Who does this university think they are. See that building? It's full of turds. Motherfuckers be turding all up in that building. And now I gotta clean it?! I've been doing this for 20 years. You with them now?! I'm not playing games. I'm not perfect. I handle my business. Now you wanna handle your business where I handle my business?!?"
Player: "Uh, okay coach"
January 21st, 2023 at 4:25 PM ^
That sounds like a really good impression of Shannon Sharpe
January 22nd, 2023 at 8:40 AM ^
A self-absorbed former NFL player turned coach? Never heard of it. I don’t really recall Ed Reed ever really being someone you’d go to for sound advice or a level head. Not to mention a future leader of young men. The writing was on the wall in this one. Maybe they will go and hire Ray Lewis next and we can all act surprised when that implodes too.
January 21st, 2023 at 2:35 PM ^
Dear Ed,
Going forward, if you have any issues and/or concerns, please come to me directly so we can discuss them one on one. Let's *not* use social media to communicate, okay?
Thanks,
Your Boss

It was an interesting hire. Reed didn't have extensive coaching experience --- he was an assistant for 1 year with the Buffalo Bills, and was an off-the-field "Chief of Staff" and "advisor" at The U in 2020-2022 (not an on-field coach).
It felt like BCU was trying to replicate what happened w/ Deion at JSU. Reed has a high football IQ, I've heard him interviewed --- but there's no way he could replicate Deion in terms of being larger than life (almost nobody can do that).
January 21st, 2023 at 2:48 PM ^
It's hard to tell what's going on here. I'm ambivalent about Neon Deion, but I definitely respect the way he unequivocally represents his side no matter who likes it. It seems like one more time when personal feelings clash with the infrastructure of the powers that be. And those things often look messy from the personal feelings side.
January 21st, 2023 at 2:57 PM ^
After watching Reed’s rant, I knew this contractual agreement was over at the first MF. He will probably insist on 27 days of salary even though he didn’t sign his contract.
January 21st, 2023 at 2:52 PM ^
I think some of these former players think they just walk in and start winning at everything. Maybe Reed and Prime are good coaches. But are they college good coaches, I have my doubts.
January 21st, 2023 at 2:54 PM ^
Deion has been self- promoting himself since the 80’s. No living athlete is better at it than Deion. That works in the social media age.
Ed Reed is more of a hardcore football guy who wears his emotions on his sleeve. His video tirade was 100% authentic rage. Not politically correct or proper, but authentically Reed.
January 21st, 2023 at 4:41 PM ^
Well, he got authentically let go.
January 21st, 2023 at 3:03 PM ^
Reggie theus. Such a 90's dude!!
Had a tv show!
January 21st, 2023 at 3:14 PM ^
I’m glad he gave the kid his wallet back and made him wait until his rant to do so.
January 22nd, 2023 at 12:36 PM ^
He just wanted everyone in the room to know that the kid was being safe and responsible. Public praise.

May as well put a Deion-Cam in here and be done with it.
January 21st, 2023 at 4:44 PM ^
Is Carl Reed related to Ed?
January 21st, 2023 at 5:12 PM ^
Can't believe Ed couldn't get over a messy office. Lots of history there. You see that trash can? That's where Brian Jenkins threw away his starbucks cups. You see that charger? That's where Alvin Wyatt charged his star tac.
January 21st, 2023 at 6:05 PM ^
Clearly you don't know Ed Reed and how he feels about trash and taking care of the little things.
HBCUs as a whole have a ton of challenges, for a variety of reasons, but there is no excuse for trash to be laying around, for an office not to be ready. I don't care if they have to give him a '98 Gateway desktop computer in a 75 SF office. Clean it up, make sure everything works and is ready for your new staff member.
January 21st, 2023 at 8:15 PM ^
so before you sign a contract with a job you want, you go to twitter and go nuts with F bombs and thrashing your employer?
That seems like a 5yr old throwing a tantrum way of doing things as opposed to an adult that is supposed to be a leader and developer of young men....
January 22nd, 2023 at 7:08 AM ^
I'm gonna guess that this wasn't the first issue Reed had during his 27-day tenure.
January 21st, 2023 at 5:58 PM ^
More regarding this situation:
"In regards to my social media and comments about the University, staff and other institutions, I would like to sincerely apologize to all BCU staff, students and alumni for my lack of professionalism," Reed wrote in a statement on Twitter. "My language and tone were unacceptable as a father, coach and leader."
"My passion for our culture, betterment and bringing our foundation up got the best of me and I fell victim while engaging with antagonists on social media as well. I am fully aware of the hard working folks at our school who are also fighting to make things better and more financially sound."
.
.
Seems like he took a step back and calmed down. Good, I hope the guy lands on his feet someplace and succeeds.

Reggie Theus is the worst AD in the country. That is not an overstatement or exaggeration.
Look it up, he's a disaster. Dave Brandon, but worse.
January 21st, 2023 at 6:12 PM ^
Ed Reed was a bad ass football player
what happened bro?
January 21st, 2023 at 6:37 PM ^
I see a growing problem, it has become cool to 'not take shit' and 'keep it 💯 ' . Our former president showed that you could be as bold and nasty as you want and not be held accountable.
There is no taking the high road or handling problems with integrity. It's all entitlement and arrogance.
I'm sure Ed Reed has valid grievances, but you don't go on social media with that language and that anger when you are the head football coach at an institution of higher learning.
