Ed Reed steps aside as Bethune Cookman head coach after 25 days:

Though it looks like the AD at Bethune Cookman, Reggie Theus (yes, that Reggie Theus), withdrew his name. Ed Reed says he didn't withdraw his name. You can see it starting at 2:36 of the video below. Deion Sanders was watching that video as it was livestreamed, and was on the phone with someone in the front row while he watched. He talked to Ed Reed at one point. Coach Prime starts talking  at 7:46.

Michigan is having drama. But at least this stuff isn't happening.

I haven't looked into this deeply, but I assume they rescinded Reed's offer once they started reviewing some of his past public statements.

But as we've seen, due diligence is so passe these days.

It's not impossible to spin, though: he has such relentlessly high standards that his employer made a non-football-related decision to let him go.

If I really squint, it could even look like Harbaugh's separation from the 49ers, but I have terrible eyesight.

Edit: Oh, bummer, Cali Wolverine didn't like this joke.

Did you really have nothing better to do as an employer than play weird garbage mind games with employees who you hired to do things other than take out the garbage?  Seems like a toxic mindset.  Not to mention the shitty smell in that office from a bunch of people with rotting fish and other foods.  No thanks.

I think they knew what they were getting with Reed but it also sounds like he wanted them to invest back into the program to a degree that they either wouldn't or couldn't and so he got publicly mad about it.  Probably not smart but I also wonder what some of these schools expect out of coaches like Reed - he's relentlessly competitive and he likely told them in the interview the broad contours of what he wanted to see.

Probably complaining about trash after a hurricane hit is grounds to take your ass somewhere else.

Reggie used to come to the nightclub I bounced at in LA during grad school. He was always very humble, very cool. I would expect him to definitely be making wise choices and taking the highroad as opposed to Reed.

Does he have beginning stages of CTE? I find the whole melodramatic self absorbed coach trope pretty weird. It's a sport. A game played by kids. Calm the hell down. Nobody understands these out of context rants.

Player: "Hey coach can I use the bathroom sir?

Ed: "Man, shit I ain't gonna let you take no shit in my goddamn bathroom. Who does this university think they are. See that building? It's full of turds. Motherfuckers be turding all up in that building. And now I gotta clean it?! I've been doing this for 20 years. You with them now?! I'm not playing games. I'm not perfect. I handle my business. Now you wanna handle your business where I handle my business?!?"

Player: "Uh, okay coach"

A self-absorbed former NFL player turned coach?  Never heard of it.  I don’t really recall Ed Reed ever really being someone you’d go to for sound advice or a level head.  Not to mention a future leader of young men.  The writing was on the wall in this one.  Maybe they will go and hire Ray Lewis next and we can all act surprised when that implodes too.

Dear Ed,

Going forward, if you have any issues and/or concerns, please come to me directly so we can discuss them one on one. Let's *not* use social media to communicate, okay?

Thanks,

Your Boss

It was an interesting hire.  Reed didn't have extensive coaching experience --- he was an assistant for 1 year with the Buffalo Bills, and was an off-the-field "Chief of Staff" and "advisor" at The U in 2020-2022 (not an on-field coach).

It felt like BCU was trying to replicate what happened w/ Deion at JSU.  Reed has a high football IQ, I've heard him interviewed --- but there's no way he could replicate Deion in terms of being larger than life (almost nobody can do that).

It's hard to tell what's going on here. I'm ambivalent about Neon Deion, but I definitely respect the way he unequivocally represents his side no matter who likes it. It seems like one more time when personal feelings clash with the infrastructure of the powers that be. And those things often look messy from the personal feelings side.

I think some of these former players think they just walk in and start winning at everything. Maybe Reed and Prime are good coaches. But are they college good coaches, I have my doubts.

Deion has been self- promoting himself since the 80’s. No living athlete is better at it than Deion.  That works in the social media age.

Ed Reed is more of a hardcore football guy who wears his emotions on his sleeve. His video tirade was 100% authentic rage. Not politically correct or proper, but authentically Reed.

Can't believe Ed couldn't get over a messy office. Lots of history there. You see that trash can? That's where Brian Jenkins threw away his starbucks cups. You see that charger? That's where Alvin Wyatt charged his star tac.

Clearly you don't know Ed Reed and how he feels about trash and taking care of the little things.

HBCUs as a whole have a ton of challenges, for a variety of reasons, but there is no excuse for trash to be laying around, for an office not to be ready. I don't care if they have to give him a '98 Gateway desktop computer in a 75 SF office. Clean it up, make sure everything works and is ready for your new staff member.

More regarding this situation:

"In regards to my social media and comments about the University, staff and other institutions, I would like to sincerely apologize to all BCU staff, students and alumni for my lack of professionalism," Reed wrote in a statement on Twitter. "My language and tone were unacceptable as a father, coach and leader."

"My passion for our culture, betterment and bringing our foundation up got the best of me and I fell victim while engaging with antagonists on social media as well. I am fully aware of the hard working folks at our school who are also fighting to make things better and more financially sound."

Seems like he took a step back and calmed down. Good, I hope the guy lands on his feet someplace and succeeds.

I see a growing problem, it has become cool to 'not take shit' and 'keep it 💯 ' . Our former president showed that you could be as bold and nasty as you want and not be held accountable.

There is no taking the high road or handling problems with integrity. It's all entitlement and arrogance.

I'm sure Ed Reed has valid grievances,  but you don't go on social media with that language and that anger when you are the head football coach at an institution of higher learning.
