If a domino falls by itself in the woods does anyone hear it?

Dude, it’s Morehouse. How much money does Morehouse’s football program generate?  How much does Michigan’s football program generate?  This is economics not a health decision. Michigan will play football this year.

Governor even went as far to sign an order the other day allow sports to go on in state. U-M also announced after months of deliberation that it is opening for Fall semester.

We may play a schedule that has MSU twice and maybe a GVSU, but whatever. I’ll take anything.

Don’t shoot the messenger but...

5% of NBA players just tested positive. You can assume that 5% of college football players will test positive. Having them on campus means there will be no way to really contain the players, and teams will not be able to play each other when there is the risk of one person on the field infecting the rest of the people on the field.

The current plans to go back and start fall semesters on campuses as well as to play college football don’t hold up in the face of any realistic assessment of the situation this Fall.  Yet given their fiscal realities and as long as there’s a remote chance of some miracle to occur that would allow it, colleges have no choice but to project a positive outcome in the fall for athletics and on-site classes.  We should know more, and see a potential flood of decisions by mid July or August.

Morehouse may be the first but I doubt they will be the last.

You can't shut everything down, but you can avoid unnecessary items.  Yesterday was our highest day yet of new cases nationally.

When kids go back to school and universities reopen, it's not going to be pretty.

With any luck, we will have a vaccine by the beginning of next year.  We could always play fall sports in the spring.  I follow Michigan baseball and softball but there is no reason why fall sports couldn't be played at the same time.  The only downside would be injuries that might not heal by the following fall but it's way better than nothing.

I’d love to see a football season as much as anyone else. It’s not gonna happen though. There’s no way Michigan is going to risk the health and safety of unpaid college age kids who would be sweating and bleeding and breathing on each other for a 60 minute game.

I get the financial fallout at Michigan is going to much more severe then at Morehouse, but that’s what’s going to happen.

I don’t know if it’s a domino. More like if a football program cancelled its season in the middle of the forest but nobody cared about the program, did it really cancel it?

Yes, it did.

This latest liberal/media freak out over the protest-outbreak was the end of any hope for college football (not to mention anything resembling a workable K-12 situation for any kids in this country).

But at least they got their freak on, amirite?  Everything else be damned.

Na.  He's right.  Liberals should all go out & buy AK-47's and just blast away at the virus, which is both totally fake and not bad at all.

(Anybody who thinks I am at all serious about the above sarcastic statement... No.  This virus that he thinks liberals are freaking out over killed an old friend, killed two people I knew from facebook who were friends of friends, killed both of a coworker's parents, had two friends damn sick and another guy I know spent a month in ICU.  So anybody whines that being cautious about this virus is some political crap should by all means make sure they get the fucking thing and avoid treatment, because that what the liberals want.)

What virtues of communism has he exposed?

I'm genuinely interested in the virtues of communism, and determining if they are of conceptual communism, which as an ideal sounds rather interesting... or if they are practical communism which simply does not work because too often people with power tend to get greedy as hell.

You have permanently cemented yourself as one of the top 5 or so morons on this site. Good job, John. You seriously need some help, man. Your entire outlook has been perverted by... I don't know exactly, but I have strong suspicions. How the hell do you deny something that is right in your face?

No doubt! This site peaked many moons ago. I long for the days of peak Lloyd Brady, The Knowledge,TOB posts, Schofields dad?, Steve Lorenz(Aquaman), no politics& actual content. It was the greatest escape& super fun check in to this site. The day the no politics rule went out the window was the beginning of the end. Now its a never ending supply of haterade political BS like every other site. I blame Brians apathy& burnout mostly. This board is worse than the old Mlive comments section we used to mock.

That’s right blame the liberals and the media. Don’t forget to add the scientists, the antifa (which don’t really exist as an organization and whos name ironically means anti-dictator), and the Chinese. And then don’t forget about the deep state, those many stupid people that use to work in the white house, and those liberal governors (as opposed to those governers in FL, TX, and all the south where cases are growing exponentially).  Oh and Bill Gates of course.

I wonder who came up with all those ideas.

If Shea wants something, he gets it. If Shea wants me to personally bring him a pony by this time next Friday, then I have to.

You don't know what happens if Shea asks and nothing is given to him. Just ask Justin Gergertu. Don't know who he is? It's because when he didn't give Shea what he wanted, Shea took him out... by forcing his parents to move someplace two hundred fifty miles from here.

Lesson is, give Shea what he wants, or you will pay.

I'm gonna have to shut down the college football season. The only way I'll reopen the season is if you go up to the Bronx, and get me some breast milk from a Cambodian immigrant...

...I only drink the finest breast milks

Much of the country spent the last month erasing two painful months of progress. Unfortunately, "We'd like to be idiots who ignore science and and math" is not compatible with progress toward normal and "It's kickoff time!"

Every dipshit crowding into a rally, a bar, a beach, etc. is loudly proclaiming "I want this misery to go on and on!"

If you want nice things, DON'T BE DUMB.

If you have evidence of spikes in cases from the outdoor protests, please share.

Also might have something to do with the fact that those protests are for something more important than "we want beerz".

You make two different points here to unpack:

(1) if thousands of people getting together outside in close quarters (some with masks, some without) didn’t significantly contribute to the community spread of the virus, then why would we assume that a hundred or so people getting together outside to play football (no fan scenario) would significantly contribute to community spread?  I find it odd that many of the same people raising the alarm of the public health risks associated with college football are ignoring or even denying the potential contribution to community spread of the protests.

(2) if your point is that the purpose/value of the protests outweighed the risks associated with the virus, and that is not the case with college football, I mostly agree (depending on what the actual risks of outdoor spread are, both may be fine). This is really a separate point from 1 though. Either these activities significantly contribute to spread and go against public health objectives or they don’t.

I'm sure it will not be the last program to cancel their season. Really feel for the players, wonder what options they have available to them if Football is going to be played at other schools this fall.

At one point in high school I was getting recruited pretty hard by Morehead State. My high school coach always thought it was more Morehouse and wondered why a historically black school would recruit me (not that there’s anything wrong with that!) I tried several times to explain that 1) they are very different schools and 2) I’m going to play in a major conference anyway so why are you so stuck on this?

Blau

June 26th, 2020 at 5:58 PM ^

With all due respect to the historically black college, I don't think Morehouse classifies as a major "domino" at this point. That being said, if Texas, Florida or USC decide to cancel their seasons... then yeah - those are dominoes.

I love sports, but I also realize by Sept 1 there will be nothing fundamentally different about the COVID-19 situation than it was in Feb-May. There will not be a vaccine. It will not magically disappear.
A restaurant, hair salon, dentist office or factory can change the facility layout and implement procedures to mitigate the spread of a virus. Opening those parts of the economy up are great. Unfortunately none of those tactics can be applied on a football field or basketball court.

While I agree with your broader point, we’re going at a clip of ~45k new cases per day. If we assume that will be constant (probably an under-estimate) and take the CDC estimate that only ~1/10 cases gets tested and confirmed, then by Sept 1 another ~10% of the country will have had it. That’s a significant number of people that will have some form of immunity.

Mitch Cumstein

June 27th, 2020 at 3:19 PM ^

Just to test the point, scientists probably won’t know for a few years if a vaccine “definitively” worked. Are you saying we lock everyone inside until that time?  Most of what I’ve read suggests those that have recovered “probably” have immunity for several months if not years (see neck sharpies part 3 in diaries).  In my opinion, “probably” is good enough for policy on something like this. “Definitely” will have very high costs.

This is when you find out who has the loudest voice in the room. The money focused people and win at all costs people will argue for the season to start in the fall. The risk averse contingent (college leadership) will be arguing to wait until there is a vaccine. Either way, no one really knows what the impact will be. But waiting for the vaccine provides a get out of jail free card to the decision makers if players do get sick, or worse die.
