This whole situation is just getting weird. Honestly think he's just going to stay at Stanford at this point.

With Luck coming back that wouldn't surprrising at all IMO
January 6th, 2011 at 11:24 PM ^
And Luck decides to go pro anyway after someone tells him lockout with new rookie salary scale, he'll be left holding the bag.

at Stanford b/c . . . .
The empty seats? Less money than Michigan? He's never been interested in coaching at his dream job? He doesn't want to follow in Bo's footsteps?
Stanford is probably no longer an option. He either goes to the NFL or he goes to Michigan. The time will not ever be better to jump to the NFL. This is the only time he'll have the opportunity to coach at his dream job. And people think he'll stay at Stanford and continue to look at 30,000 fans. Not gonna happen.
January 6th, 2011 at 11:10 PM ^
If he were that enamored with coaching Michigan, he'd be in A2 already...
January 6th, 2011 at 11:21 PM ^
He's playing the game. No way he stays at Stanford now. I wouldn't be surprised if Stanford is already on their own double-secret coaching search.

If he really wanted to be at UM he already would. Otherwise he is just screwing his own recruiting class over, making his job (which is not going to be easy to begin with) that much harder. Doesn't make sense.
January 7th, 2011 at 12:56 AM ^
Michigan cannot publicly fill the position until next Wednesday. Even if he has agreed in principle to take the job, it can't be announced until next week.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:32 AM ^
What is that the case?
January 7th, 2011 at 2:38 AM ^
Michigan is technically a public university and the job has to be posted for 7 days to allow people to apply before announcing whom will succeed rich rodriguez
January 7th, 2011 at 8:43 AM ^
It's very surprsing people are just ignoring this. Really, neither Brandon nor JH (nor MSC or any other UM official) can even IMPLY that JH is the new coach until then. Unless they want to spend the next 10 years defending against lawsuits.
So, we have YET another clock to watch.
The good thing is we know this will never end. So, no need to get stressed over it.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:54 PM ^
Thats very interesting, I was expecting an anouncment of the new coach the next day if not the same day. I thought we would have learned our lesson 3 years ago.

legitimate shot at national title next year. That's why he'll stay.

Not with a rebuilt offensive line
January 7th, 2011 at 12:00 AM ^
Depth and Andrew Luck. The O-line isn't going to be all freshmen. They have a legitimate shot at a championship next year.
January 7th, 2011 at 5:21 AM ^
They return a bunch of starters... Yes, 3 of the O line are gone. But it's not as if they get replaced with true freshmen or anything. Stanford has done a really good job of building depth on both sides of the ball. They will be pre-season top 10 minimum, if not top 5.
January 6th, 2011 at 11:15 PM ^
Are you sure that Stanford is offering "less money than Michigan"? From a Mercury News report:
Stanford, meanwhile, emerged as a surprising contender. Harbaugh met with school officials in the morning and the NFL Network reported that Stanford’s financial proposal, with bonuses, eclipsed the 49ers’ offer. The 49ers were prepared to offer an average salary of about $5 million, with a bonus package that could take it to a maximum of $6 million annually, according to a source.

We are now talking about paying 5 or 6 millon to an unnamed head coach, but we couldn't pay 900 thousand for Jeff Casteel? Along with our $2.5 million head coach?

Let it go.
January 6th, 2011 at 11:26 PM ^
If you watched Brandon's presser, you know that we are going to pay a salary commensurate with where he, Mary Sue, and the regents believe our program should fit nationally. In other words, we're talking about top 10 college money. That is more than Stanford will pay. That is more than Stanford can pay.
Supposedly the Niners offered 4.2. - 4.5 million. Stanford could jpossibly do better than that if you include shoe money and appearances, and appearances and stuff, but they can't approach the next level.
This looks more and more like an effort by Harbaugh and Brandon to arrive at the "market price".
January 6th, 2011 at 11:38 PM ^
But the report above implies that Stanford may be willing to pay Harbaugh more than $6 million a year.
And I'm sure they have the resources/donors to fund that if they want to keep him that badly.
January 6th, 2011 at 11:49 PM ^
and I don't think they want to. Maybe 5 mill. I don't see them giving Stoops, Saban money. I just don't. Maybe I'm wrong. I don't think so, tho.
Oh, and btw, why wouldn't Michigan tap a donor or two if that's what was going on? An offer is already on the table, and if the regents have a cap, and if Mary Sue won't go over a dollar amount, why not have S. Ross make a promise or two to meet or exceed.
January 7th, 2011 at 12:02 AM ^
I don't doubt that Michigan could make Harbaugh the highest-paid college football coach if it wanted to or that it could possibly top Stanford in a bidding war. But Stanford isn't some Podunk college--they have plenty of resources:
Stanford University raised more in private donations than any other U.S. college or university last year, even as charitable support for higher education fell steeply nationwide because of the recession, a new survey shows.
Stanford held onto the top spot for the fifth straight year, taking in $640.1 million in donations in 2009, down about 18% from the previous year, according to the report released Wednesday by the Council for Aid to Education. Harvard was second with $601.6 million, followed by Cornell, the University of Pennsylvania and Johns Hopkins.

Their endowment is bigger than ours. They just have to decide whether or not they want to make the necessary financial commitment towards athletics to remain a football powerhouse. I don't know if they will, but if want to, they can certainly do it.
January 7th, 2011 at 12:28 AM ^
The Stanford Athletic Department is running a deficit and I highly doubt endowment funds will be used to make JH the highest paid coach in the country at a school that is generally indifferent about football. Any additional money will likely come from wealthy alums or other outside sources (which is very possible), not from the school itself.
January 7th, 2011 at 12:38 AM ^
John Elway, James Lofton, John Lynch. Elway could probably do it on his own if he really wanted to, although I'd think it wouldn't be a good idea ... probably want to get the deep-pocketed alumni to share the load.
The department isn't running a deficit now, but they don't seem to have the cash on hand for a big offer ... it would have to be from alumni, I think. FWIW, it looks like Stanford's overall athletic budget is about 80% of Michigan's ...

This isn't on you, but since it's the apocalypse, I might as well say that ESPN and its affiliate companies can suck a very large bag of dicks right about now. Their credibility sailed a long time ago with me, and it's only getting worse, IMO. So, basically, anything I hear/read from ESPN I will take with a grain of shut-the-fuck-up.

If we are going to pay top 10 money (4.5 - 5 mill) we better get a top 10 coach, not Brady Hoke.He could be had for 20% of that.
January 7th, 2011 at 12:19 AM ^
given that stanford's endowment is more than twice the size of ours (13.8 b vs our 6.6b according to google & wiki), i'm pretty sure they can raise money at least as well as we can. just look at the alumni with huge $. they've got a ton of alums with crazy silicon valley cash, (including both the google guys, only one of whom is also a UM alum), plus a business school just as good as ours. (when i was looking at schools, one of stanford and michigan was #1 in one of the big rankings, and the other had been #1 the previous year.)
